Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 17:08 UK time, Saturday, 18 July 2009

BeachBoys.JPGIt's been a really busy couple of weeks on the show so we are getting ready to cope with a steady stream of suggestions again this week. Miss Babs will be back from her hols feeling refreshed so I'll need to save some energy for when she is producing later in the week. As always, I'm looking forward to getting your contributions for this week's shows....

Monday:
From The Ronettes to The Fratellis, tonight's show features the top trios of all time...

Tuesday:
A return to a theme which turned out to be much better than you would think. Pucker up for...whistling songs. perhaps tonight could be the night Roger Whittaker gets a look in...

Wednesday:
Parent power rules tonight. From Daddy Cool to Sylvia's Mother, it's songs about Ma and Pa...

Thursday:
It's the Get It On beach party tonight with the songs that were made for frolicking around in the sand...

Year of Decision / three degrees
I was a big fan of the Philadelphia label. They brought some great black artists to prominence in the 70's.
The Three Degrees were one of the acts, but forget their No. 1 hit, year of decision was far superior and a thoroughly jolly wee tune. It was a toss up between that one and TSOP by MFSB (The sound of Philadelphia
by Mother Father Sister Brother , the house band which featured the degrees on vocals.

    Badge / Cream
I remember seeing a film years ago, possibly a TV movie which had this song running through it. It was one of the characters fav songs but I'm damned if I can remember what film it was. Googled the song to see if I could find out with no luck although I did discover where the strange title came from.

What About Me / Kenny Rogers,Kim Carnes and James Ingram.
A love triangle but anything with James Ingram on it will do me

Are we the Waiting / Green Day
If anyone has a ticket for their SECC gig this year I'll swop you a 20p with no date for them.

Oh please no not Jelly Sky. Bryan Burnett played this on the last whistling theme and introduced it as Bryan Ferry's Jealous Guy instead of Roxy Music. He then faced the wrath of RJ who phoned in and corrected the error of his ways before the song was finished and he then publicly apologised to the nation as the song faded out.

If you where going to play a Roxy whistling song it has to be 'A Song For Europe'.

The best mummy or daddy song by a country mile is Papa was a rolling Stone / Temptations.
Unfortunately to be appreciated in all it's glory the full 12 minute version would have to be played and that's not gonna happen. Four different vocalists all taking the role of siblings questioning their mother as to what happened to their father and each one getting the same answer. The long instrumental passages between verses signifying the time lapse between each kid's questions are brilliantly arranged with instantly recognisable bass line and Hi Hat throughout. It is a stunning piece of music and if you've not heard the full version dig it out, stick on the earphones and appreciate.

    A few shorter suggestions

Swing Your Daddy / Jim Giltrap (the ultimate doo wop song)
My Fathers eyes / Joe Cocker
My Father's House / Bruce Springsteen
Saturday Fathers / Dean Friedman (for anyone who's experienced the pain of being separated from their kids)
Mama you've been on my mind / Rod Stewart (from Never a dull moment...My first ever album)
Mama weer all crazee now / Slade (My first ever single)

Springsteen - My Fathers House for reasons not to be gone into here, but anyone who is a fan should seek out his introduction and performance at teh Shrine Auditorium 1990. Not hard to find on that well know etc etc

And might as well lob in two more which are wonderful stories of a wee boy and his relationshios with his parents:

Springsteen - The Wish, all about his relationship with his mother and it is a fantastic track.

    Used Cars

I still have the photo of him trying to cook sausages on his new brick built barbecue just by the water feature with only a golfing umbrella protecting him fron the driving rain. It was taken through the window from the front room of his house where everyone else was having a right good bevvy. The Scottish spirit, ye cannae whack it1
