Next week's themes....

Bryan Burnett | 12:51 UK time, Friday, 29 May 2009

Here we go then with another week's themes. Thursday's looks a bit strange when you see it written down but I am sure it's going to work beautifully on air. Sort of...

P1000831.jpgMonday:
We kick off BBC Radio Scotland's '30 days in Europe' season with a two hour celebration of the best European records ever made. From Plastic Bertrand to Abba it's Europop like you've never heard it before...

Tuesday:
It's the piano in pop! Who can forget the opening on I Don't Like Mondays or surely this is a good chance to celebrate some of Elton's finest moments? Let's have your suggestions for the best ivory tinkling moments in pop...

Wednesday:

Tonight's theme is sinful behaviour in song. We'll accept any of the deadly sins as well as some of the more modern ones. It's your chance to confess so get on the email with your suggestions...

Thursday:
Tonight is another one of very, very interactive shows where everything will be decided on the night. One rule - the last word of the previous song must be included in the next one. It could run something like this:

Don't Go Breaking My Heart
Heart Like A Wheel
Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
Road to Hell

Could be a tricky show but I suspect it's going to be a lot of fun.

What about Saturday's theme? Or will the hour on Saturday be themeless?

Speaking of Saturday, can you arrange to begin at 17:00 and not 18:00?

Otherwise you clash with Bill Black's Country Show.

I know I can 'Listen Again' but think of the inconvenience!

I'll leave the matter in your capable hands, in the expectation that it will be resolved forthwith.

    Thanking you in advance, S-g

Glen, I saw your mention of The Rolling Stones for Tuesday and was immediately reminded of the late great Ian Stewart, the original member of that group, who played piano and organ on many of their hits.

I recall as a youngster, the local rumour that a famous band had stayed overnight in Cellardyke (actually next door to where I was brought up and now less than fifty yards from where I am as I type...).

We all thought that it was none other than the Beatles, a new group on the block, and the only 'popstars' who had been heard of in the East Neuk. Little did we know that 'Stu' had founded the greatest band of all time, OK, Pink Floyd might just give them a run for their mega-money.....

Stu's auntie, 'Mrs Wilson', stayed a couple of doors away and made ham and eggs for the Stones that morning. OK, Ian Stewart was born in Pittenweem and is actually what we refer to as a 'Tornerse'. Nevertheless, he was, and I suppose still is, one of my all-time heroes

Bryan, please play 'Lets spend the night together'. Great piano intro.

Did you know that Ian Rankin modelled Rebus on Ian Stewart?
And that he wrote a song about him a couple of years back that featured on an album called Ballad of the Book?
First and only time `Pittenweem` has been rhymed with `rock and roll dream`

    THE SIXTH STONE
Words by Ian Rankin, music by Aidan Moffat and the Best Ofs

    All the way from Pittenweem
to the rock 'n' roll dream,
all the way from East Neuk, Fife,
    to the R&B life,

Down in dear old London town,
you were the conscience of the band,
and when those Stones they had to roll,
it was you that drove the van,

    All the way from Pittenweem
to the rock 'n' roll dream,
all the way from East Neuk, Fife
    to the R&B life,

But your face just didn't fit,
chiselled like a lump of coal,
and as the groupies came and went,
you'd be on the eighteenth hole,

    Far away from Pittenweem
with the rock 'n' roll dream,
far away from East Neuk, Fife,
    with the R&B life,

So from Beggars through to Exile,
you dug out rhythms like black diamonds,
    but cruising down Route 66,
did you dream of lochs and highlands?

    Did you dream of Pittenweem,
not the rock 'n' roll dream,
did you dream of East Neuk, Fife,
    or the R&B life?

    All the way from Pittenweem
to the rock 'n' roll dream,
all the way from East Neuk, Fife,
Until the end of your life...

In the corner was a jukebox and on that jukebox was a song that was played over and over again. We just new it as the sexy song because of the female moaning over the intro. Six months later it was a Uk no.1. Not everybody likes Roxette, of course, but compared to many many other acts in their 'euro niche' they have had a degree of longevity and produced a body of tracks that have real credibility. Not only that, but they are a brilliant live act and have received numerous awards for their output. I caught them live in Belgium once and I have to say I was really surprised at how good they were - amazing band, brilliant set, and lots of really good songs. Trust me - they will be cool again!

Fats Waller - 'It's A Sin To Tell A Lie' (sort of prolonging the piano theme here but it's very good).

another try for 'Your Honour' by Pluto Shervington (adultery)

Pluto also recorded a version of 'Book of Rules', which possibly fits this theme. There's also The Heptones' version and I like the version by Inner Circle.

10CC - Lazy Ways', from 'How Dare You'

or there's 'Up The Lazy River' by Hoagy Carmichael...different versions by Louis Prima, Mills Brothers, Hoagy himself or Bing Crosby with Louis Armstrong...who also recorded 'Lazy Bones' with Gary Crosby.

'Hell' by The Tiger Lillies, who have so many songs for this theme but so few suitable for airplay at teatime. You could play this though. Imagine the singsong round the tea table to this one...conducting with the cutlery and drumming the rhythm on the cruet set ...altogether now "you're goin' to hell, yes you're goin' to hell"

Oh! Is 'Burlesque' sinful enough? It's a song by Family in case you didn't know :0)

Just realised I'll not be able to participate in Thursday's show...I'll bet it's really good too.

Example: We agree that Pink Floyd's 'Fat Old Sun' is our chosen track. We therefore do our best to come up with songs beforehand which could lead to 'Fat Old Sun' being mentioned as a possible track to be played eg 'Fat Bottomed Girls', 'Old Shep', 'Here comes the sun'.

Obviously BB & Babs can do their best to spoil the party, but we can enjoy ourselves thinking of the lead-in tracks!

Middle 8 - the bit in the middle of the song that's different from the verse/chorus shtick. Usually 8 bars long (and almost always a multiple of 4 bars).

Can be as simple (yet very different from the rest of the song) as an extended drum break, as in Englishman in New York, or as complex as a set of key changes, as in Soul Man, or a very different tempo solo, such as In My Life.

Got to have Games Without Frontiers on Monday, btw.
