Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:57 UK time, Thursday, 14 May 2009

sherlock.jpgI know it's a wee bit premature but I thought I would get next week's themes up online tonight. Normally I do it from home on a Friday but this weekend I'm off to Manchester to watch the fastest man in the world run through the middle of town. I also have the best job in Scotland this week...hosting the Scottish Curry Awards. Dream gig or what?
Vic Galloway will be doing the show on Monday night and I'll be back on Tuesday -hopefully with some award winning onion bajhis as a carry out!

Monday:
As part of BBC Radio Scotland's Conan Doyle season, tonight's show is all about mysteries, whodunits and the people who solve them...
Tuesday:
Angel Of The Morning or Wake Up Boo? Tonight's Get It On is all about the hours before noon. What are your AM anthems? Get in touch and get them on...
Wednesday:
It's the Get It On bring and buy sale. What were your best charity shop finds and what were the albums that were so bad you gave them away? Why not leave a comment on the blog with your second-hand songs...
Thursday:
There will be no short of reading material on tonight's show. From Mirror,Mirror to Hello we'll be featuring the printed press. Newspapers and magazines in song is the theme. Get on the email with your suggestions...

Maggie moved to Holland for many years after recording both the single and the cut-down version for the TV show. Since then she has produced a couple of different versions but they are hard to find. I am hoping she will play live in Scotland soon as it would be good to hear her again. I do know she is back in the business and still has a superb voice.

"Watson, look up and tell me what you see."

Watson gathered his thoughts. "Well, astronomically it tells me that there are many galaxies and, potentially, many planets capable of supporting life. Astrologically I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Chronographically, I deduce that the time is 20 past 3, give or take a minute. Cosmologically, I recognise our insignificance. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will enjoy a beautiful day after sunrise. What does it tell you, Holmes?"

    DC,

I shall attempt to answer your question, despite my tendency towards sciolistic rambling.

In the U.S. almost every car is fitted with an automatic gearbox. The gear-selector has a 'Park' option, which means the handbrake is almost never used. In fact they,(North Americans), refer to the handbrake as the 'Emergency Brake.'

Now, imagine parking your car without utilising the handbrake, i.e. leave it in gear. You too will experience the wee lurch of which you speak.

That is my theory. No doubt Rich or Danielle will correct me in due course.

They are trying a bit too hard and at the same time still trying to meet a family audience. The likes of HBO with the Sopranos etc., was a long way off. I bought five cassette tapes for my first albums and these were quite a mixed bunch:

'Me and Bobby McGee' - Kris Kristofferson
'After the gold rush' - Neil Young
'Billion Dollar Babies' - Alice Cooper
    'Stones' - Neil Diamond
and an instantly forgettable album by John Denver (OK, I was only twelve at the time...)

I sold them all (apart from JD) to a pal who had a love for fast cars and music and I went on to buy vinyl LPs for the next fifteen years or so. I eventually entered the digital age with CDs and subsequently via internet downloads courtesy of iChoons.

However, I missed four of the original five albums so much so that I eventually bought these in vinyl and then later in digital form.

My serious request for Wednesday is for the title tracks from each of these to be played. Any one (or all four!) would be good

NME 7" EP Fourplay with exclusive tracks by Elvis Costello and a "NME Version" of Honey I'm A Big Boy Now by Billy Bragg

RSO Primecuts, 10" single with an exclusive live Clapton track (not that he is my favourite)and (at that time) an unreleased Yvonne Elloman Track. Fun sleeve with a cheery butcher.

The River lp Springsteen marked as promotional and with a listed track (Held Up Without A Gun) which was not actually on the album. However put that in at £2.99 made a big mistake.

Honourable mention for a sleeve shocker!

Rodney Crowell - 1981 self titled album. Check that sleeve out if you dare!

A search for years which finally paid off

Gene Clark's legendary lp "No Other" pristine copy and with the poster!! I have never seen another copy and dont know of anyone else who has this (with poster that is I guess you could pick up the lp without for about £25 maybe less these days on ebay).

The one that I had to let go?

I had the rarest Springsteen promo cd a double set called 70's to 80's, Japanese, still wrapped. Could afford to hold on to it for a week! Wish I could have kept it but it is worth over £1K at todays prices.

Billion Dollar Babies is one of my all-time favourite albums.

If I were forced to choose one track, it would be 'Unfinished Sweet' with the James Bondish thing going on. 'Mary Ann' is short and sweet, but I'm waiting for an appropriate theme. Maybe songs with a twist in the tail. (No pun intended).

I never had as much money as you guys. My £1 a week pocket money got me 4 ex chart singles from Menzies or Boots until they put them up to 30p each which really p****d me off as I was a single down every week. So it's 1975, I'm 13 years old in a caravan in Ayr and my mum takes us to a jumble sale where there's a stall selling ex jukebox records, no centre, no sleeves for 2p each. I bought enough to make my own ex chart and couldn't wait for the holiday to finish so I could get home and play them. It was the start of a 7 inch collection that eventually ran to about 4000.

Two I always remember from that find were Smokie 'If you think you know how to love me' cos it was still in the charts and I'd got it for 2p and George McCrae's Rock your Baby which I made the first No.1 of my own imaginary chart. Either would be good.

The tracks I particularly recall are Face of Appalachia and Heartache, the latter is a duet with Linda Ronstadt. Remembering about this I think I might go and buy a copy on new technology oh buggles.)

Also remember Dont Know Why I Love You by Clarence Frogman Henry. I bought this from a stall in York when I was on holiday, I think I was about 12. I think I was taken more by the name as I had never heard of him nor the song, and when I first played it I was disappointed (where were the frogs?), but then I couldnt get it out of my head. Over the years of course the story has been recounted to others as being a sign of my incredible musical taste and knowledge even at such a young age.

In those days it was only really available from the more 'dodgy' kind of paper shops you certainly couldn't get it in RS McColls. I eventually sucribed to it. Anyway - I'm really greatly indebted to 'Rolling Stone' for broadening my musical taste at a formative age. They would write serious reveiws of Johnny Cash, Flatt and Scruggs, Miles Davis and just about every other kind of music under the sun at a time when Sounds, NME and Melody Maker would have probably have just poked fun or not reviewed at all. It was also interesting to get the US perspective on UK bands too. In it's time it was a trailblazer and I think was the first publication to print Annie Leibovitz pictures regularly. I also remember reading Hunter Thompson's 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' originally published in Rolling Stone in two parts ( I've still got those issues).

Plenty music to choose from to pay tribute to this mag.

Anything by the Stones - but would favour 'rip this joint' or 'rocks off' or 'Gimme Shelter'
or of course their version of Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone or Dylan himself or the Muddy Waters original from which all these other 'Rolling Stones' came.

    Paolo,

Think of it as an opportunity to re-request songs that didn't get played first time around.
I feel compelled to compile a list.......................................

DC...you are certainly taking the poetry season to heart!
thanks all for all your suggestions this week - really enjoyed the stories for Bring and Buy. Apart from Paolo's reservations about themeless Monday - I think next week fun - looking forward to family stories on Thursday.

    Enjoy the weekend ....MissBabs x

Public holiday weekend for me...I shall mull it over during gardening, housework, shopping and wine.
