Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:02 UK time, Friday, 23 January 2009

There are not many programmes which have played Jimmy Shand and Jan Hammer in the same week! I look forward to getting an equally diverse list in for this week . Email your suggestions or call or text during the show...

Monday - Due to popular demand on the Get In On blog, tonight's theme is songs and artists connected to the Farmyard! Size Of A Cow perhaps? Get in touch and Get It On...

Tuesday - Joe The Jam Man suggests 'revolutions'. Anything to do with circular shapes and movements. You could pick Round Round or Watching the Wheels.

Wednesday - Double languages. An evening of songs sung in English that have a foreign language interlude.

Thursday - I name that tune in one! Tracks that you recognise from the opening note, as suggested by P McCafferty.

    SUGGESTED THEMES

As Feb 3rd is the 50th anniversary of 'the day the music died' could the programme include songs and covers of Buddy, Ritchie and the Big Bopper.

Also,( I've suggested this one before but I think it would make a great show), "Unfulfilled desires and thwarted ambitions". Even my limited music collection contains a good few. eg:-

    'Only make believe' Conway Twitty
'Smoke gets in your eyes' Bryan Ferry
'No particular place to go' Chuck Berry
    'No money down' Chuck Berry
    'I'm a loser' Beatles
'Never had a dream come true' Stevie Wonder

Adam, you're right. It was your idea and, correct me if I'm wrong, but you haven't had a theme chosen yet. This is your big day!

    Pigs on the Wing 1
    Dogs
    Pigs (Three Different Ones)
    Sheep
    Pigs on the Wing 2

OK, perhaps this falls into the wishful thinking category as expressed in #2 above. Howsabout playing 'Sheep' then? It has one of the best playouts ever!

Failing that (& I know it's bound to fail), 'Piggies' from the Beatles White Album HAS to be played

Of course, if it's the farmyard we're on about, it's full of pats - Pat Benatar, Pat Boone....

I listened to Sunday Girl before suggesting Denis (#21), because I thought there was some french in it, but there is none in the version of the track I have (from Greatest Hits: Sight and Sound).

I'm sure I have heard it with "depeche toi" replacing "hurry up" in some of the lines, so if Bryan is going to play it he'll need to make sure he has a version which included the french.

Denis has been played before, but not as frequently as Hanging on the Telephone.

What is the most instantly recognisable record of the rock'n'roll era (say 1956 on)?

Based on its sales I would suggest Rock Around The Clock (though a number of buyers may no longer be with us). I would discount Candle In The Wind as it is nondescript. Maybe it's Hey Jude.

I know it got a mention last night, Heroes by David Bowie is instantly recognisable through Robert Fripp's guitar drone. And this was in the days before the E-Bow! Apparently he noted down on the floor which notes would feedback when he stood in certain places and controlled the sustained notes by moving around.

The opening chord of Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out is instantly recognisable.

A few years ago I hopped into a taxi to see old hippy Robin Williamson at the old fruitmarket. The taxi driver wanted to know who I was going to see, and for some reason started having a rant about me not listening to "proper music" like he did. Then he said "do you want to hear some proper music?". I replied in a moment of rare boldness, "I'll name that tune in two". And luckily for me I did! It was Gentle on my mind by Dean Martin, so I guess it must be instantly recognisable also!

Sometimes he just didn't cut it, especially at one gig I saw him at where Fos Paterson didn't turn up, so they played without one band member down! But at his best he could transport you to another world with his lyrics and tunes. A true unique genius. I texted earlier re John Martyn.

I first got into him through his Rock Goes to College show at the time of the release of One World, and he was one of the first guys I wanted to see when I started getting to gigs. Being a local man, it was pretty easy to catch him in Edinburgh, Perth, Dumfries and elsewhere in the 80s. He clearly had his demons, gigs could be either a real mess or nights of real fury, beauty and awesome noise. I remember him fighting with Rory Gallagher onstage at an Ethiopia benefit in the Usher Hall in the mid-80s, and having to be hauled offstage by his faithful and long-suffering roadie Big Kenny. Also ran into him in Bannermans before a miners' benefit on the Cowgate where he downed a huge succession of bacardis before going across the road to play a blistering set.

I saw him a couple of times in the last few years, after he had lost his leg, and whilst the first time it looked as if he had started to lose things (swollen fingers and all), the second time he was back to being the genial genius I could remember. Clearly not well, doubled in weight, not much hair, and only one foot to put on the stage, he climbed up and asked "anyone know of any gigs for a one-legged Sumo wrestler?"!

So, he's lost his battles with his demons, and now leaves behind a massive body of work, some of it maybe not the best, but the best of it surpassing most of what the rest of the musical world could do: Solid Air, Bless the Weater, One World, Inside Out and Grace and Danger in particular.

Rest in peace, Big Man, it was obviously a troubled trip for you, but look what you did... x

#307 Harry - I too was at loads of those gigs. Best nights out I can remember were a meal and then a John Martyn gig. Even when he was not on-form he always entertained. It was amazing how the crowd always shouted out for their old favourite Martyn songs and he never failed to deliver. He usually had a section mid-gig where he did a load of his old tunes acoustically with nothing but his great voice and his guitar. Always at home playing in Glasgow.

Wherever you are now, John - keep strummin awa.

    # 311 - It was easy to become somewhat fanatical about the big McGeechie, Jim - Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth - just trail him round the country, every show with a somewhat different vibe, depending on his mood and intake!

He was a genuine one-off, I can't imagine we'll ever see anyone like him again. I'm still kind of shocked, even though it also now seems that it was pretty inevitable.

Ach well, life goes on, but will be less interesting without the prospect of a gig from him at any point.
