A sample of Trev...

I love it when our listeners reveal their connections to songs on the show. This can be anything from 'first dance at our wedding' to 'I went to school with the bass player in the band'.
Last night's theme was 'the art of sampling' and one of the more unusual celebrity connections was e-mailed in by Alan Cameron in Dumfries:

" I'm a musician and I bought a sampler about 20 years ago from a programmer who worked with legendary producer Trevor Horn (Buggles fame and many others).Horn sampled orchestra hits and guitar riffs and incorporated them in the 1983 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' by Yes of which he was a member for a short time. I've got the actual sample disk with these samples on it - it came with the sampler and a 100 other disks! It's hiding in my loft somewhere - must dig it out!"

I had to play the song and it tickled me to think that the samples featured on that very record were languishing in a loft in Dumfries

    We do wish Bryan would at some point play a little of Frank Zappa, although in his words "unplayable" but we're quite sure that there are a lot of people out there who would appreciate good music like Zappa, so come on let's get together on this one!

    There's little visual distinction between piano rolls unless you're an expert. I could not distinguish this song by the gladioli sshaker from the Moonlight Sonata, for example, which I once played on a pianola. No, the only sure way is to listen it. Incidentally since the pianola is foot operated it leaves your hands free for a harmonica accompaniment.

    I think I'll move to Montana and become a dental floss tycoon.
