Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:00 UK time, Friday, 12 December 2008

I think we have another interesting week of themes lined up for you and two of them come from GIO listeners on the other side of the pond. It's a thrill to not only have people listening around the world but particpating in the show as well.
As always feel free to blog or e-mail in advance or give us a call during the show...

neworder.jpgMonday:
Following on from 'boy bands' and 'girl band' nights, Lyn from Madison suggests a night of bands with both! So it's mixed gender groups for tonight. Get on to the email or why not leave your suggestions on the blog...

Tuesday:
Mony Mony, Louie Louie or perhaps something by Duran Duran? Repetition is the theme and it's been suggested by Danielle in Canada.

Wednesday:
This month is the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission so 'space' is tonight's theme. From Rocket Man to Walkin On The Moon get in touch and Get It On...

Thursday:
It's a very self centred show tonight. The theme is artists singing about themselves. I Want To Break Free, All By Myself and Why Does It Always Rain On Me should get you started. Let's have your suggestions then....

And as it got requested but not played on 'one word' night:

There are a couple of band collaborations too - Girlschool/Motorhead and Fun Boy Three/Bananarama spring to mind.

Is anyone going to dare to suggest The Bangles?

(interesting how these are mostly bloke bands with a female singer... more contrasting suggestions would be good)

The only trouble I had with a list for Monday was cutting it down (see below!). Certainly no need for Eurovision chancers to pad it out (Dana International?)! I think all of the following are good songs and a lot of the bands are Scottish, by the way.

#8/#139 - Not sure if bands are more 'equal opps' now or if it's just my age/knowledge of indie groups that makes it seem that way?

Kenickie and Elastica are the most female-dominated bands (they just have male drummers). There are some female bassists (Sons and Daughters, Smashing Pumpkins, The Make-up), keyboard players (Pulp, Dandy Warhols) and guitarists (Ash, Echobelly). Most female drummers (apart from the Velvets) seem to be in more recent bands - White Stripes, Gossip, Glasvegas, Popup. Is this more acceptable now than in more chauvinistic times? Obviously there are all-girl rock bands too like L7, Sleater Kinney, The Donnas, etc.

    2000s:
'Ladyflash' - The GO! Team (saw them at ABC - great fun live)
'Girls Make Me Sick' - Butcher Boy (does fitting the theme with both song and band name, and knowing the keyboard/accordionist, help get it played? She'd probably want me to ask!)
'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground' - White Stripes
'Anyone Else But You' - Moldy Peaches
    'The LSB' - Make Model
'Gilt Complex' - Sons and Daughters
    'Strict Machine' - Goldfrapp
'Love Me Like You' - Magic Numbers
'Standing in the Way of Control' - Gossip
'Destroy Everything You Touch' - Ladytron
    'We're from Barcelona' - I'm from Barcelona
'The Green Grass of Tunnel' - Mum
+ Arcade Fire, Dandy Warhols, The Ting Tings, Ladyhawk, Glasvegas, El Presidente, Popup, The Zutons, Juliette and the Licks

    1990s:
'Come Out Tonight' - Kenickie (saw them at King Tut's when guitarist blew up her amp!)
'R U A Believer' - The Make-up (show at King Tut's still my favourite gig ever)
    'Sour Times' - Portishead
    'French Disko' - Stereolab
    'Connection' - Elastica
    'Misshapes' - Pulp
'Lazy Line Painter Jane' - Belle & Sebastian
'You're in a Bad Way' - St Etienne
    'Tipp City' - The Amps
    'Today' - Smashing Pumpkins
+ The Breeders, Throwing Muses, Ash, Skunk Anansie, Echobelly, Salad, Bis, Sleeper, Lush, The Go-Betweens, Belly, Slowdive, Lamb

    1980s:
    'TeenAge Riot' - Sonic Youth
'Monkey Gone to Heaven' - The Pixies
    'Sometimes' - My Bloody Valentine
    'Temptation' - New Order
'Hanging on the Telephone' - Blondie
'Pearly Dew Drops Drop' - Cocteau Twins
    'Hit' - The Sugarcubes
    + The Pastels, The Vaselines

    1970s:
'Love in a Void' - Siouxsie and the Banshees
    + X-Ray Spex, Talking Heads

    1960s:
'I'm Waiting for the Man' - Velvet Underground
+ Sly and the Family Stone, The Mamas and the Papas

Norrie: We appear to be both collating a list - I thought I'd got in quickly enough to save anyone manually visiting all 50+ "next week's themes" pages and typing them up, but apparently not.

Last.fm is a very nifty service - you download a wee application that links into pretty much every popular media player, and tells last.fm what you're listening to. It's all done automagically - although I expect the BBC has a thingy[1] built into their music system rather than a desktop application, which is why I think it'd be really easy for GiO to do this.

The site then builds up a profile of your listening, with lots of nice stats coming out of it, which are nicely and programatically accessible to external systems. So I have a wee thingy on my own website that displays the 10 artistes I listened to most often (using iTunes) in the previous week.

    Here's my profile:
http://www.last.fm/user/martinb9999 (why yes, I *am* a massive Billy Bragg fan, but didn't realise it until I joined last.fm and looked at my stats)

It's also a good way to discover new music (as they do recommendations based on your listening), and people who share your musical tastes.

    More here: http://www.last.fm/about

[1] Technical term! The real way it almost certainly works is a service running in their music system that calls the last.fm API.

I love how you can discover new music you don't have. I've used it to check out more songs by folk I've seen on Jools Holland or wherever, like Nicole Atkins, Rodrigo y Gabriella and Laura Marling.

It is a bit patchy since Warners spat the dummy about royalties and pulled their artists' tracks. So you go to Led Zeppelin, White Stripes or Arctic Monkeys and can't play anything.

re second point: I suppose one person's guff/twaddle will be another person's nostalgia. Being the age I am, The New Seekers is my nostalgia and I like hearing songs by them every now and then...not often mind you. I think variety is the best thing in GIO. I am irked though when the same track is played on many occasions throughout the year...I suspect that when a theme is repeated, so is some of the music. But, hey ho! I'm feeling happier than I was this time yesterday...went to see the musical Sunshine on Leith last night and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Go and see it if you can.

Got it, Jim and Julie. Looks like JZ was impressed with BB's musical format and the increased listening figures (in his report of 26-10-06). September of that year seems to be the start time roughly. Now all we need is the following 10 months of themes....

However, I don't see anything wrong with repeating themes say a year apart, as long as it's a wide enough choice to allow a different selection of songs to be played!
