Next week's themes...
Next week on Get It On we're embarking on the four nations challenge which was suggested by Jim In Erskine. The themes are very simple. We'll be playing home-grown artists, local heroes and songs connected to each country. At the end of the week we'll have a chance to reflect on which country has produced the most culturally rich playlist.
Monday - Northern Ireland/Ireland
Tuesday - England
Wednesday - Wales
Thursday - Scotland

Yes absolutely he is. He is also entitled to switch off! :-)
Complain about this comment
AFR you are right, and normally Glen's posts are witty and he suggests some good stuff. But the criticism of this week sems a bit random - I dont see the point just saying all this is rubbish without saying why and making some better suggestions?
Anyway more to the point...
Bonnie Tyler - Its A Heartache
Chas n Dave - Rabbit
Dana - All Kind of Everything
Fran and Anna - The Noo
There that should cheer everyone up. Who says I'm grumpy now!

DOH! Norrie - Dana was a Eurovision entrant in 1970 I think. Brilliant song too! :-)

Hey JanFromRuglin - good list! Did you know that Steve Hillage's 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' could also be played on Scotland night as it was written by Donovan? He hails from Maryhill originally! Great guy - met him quite a few times when he has played here. He's over here at the moment, I think - no I am not giving anybody his moby number! He still thinks of himself as a Glaswegian. England: "Bizzare Love Triangle" by the mighty New Order.

Come on now JFE, just because you got your way with the theme for the week don't get all bent out of shape if someone airs an opinion.
Anyway, I digress.
Some tunes for this week.
Northern Ireland - National Express - The Divine Comedy
England - Meet me on the corner - Lindisfarne
Wales - 68 Guns - The Alarm
Scotland - Broken Down Angel - Nazareth
Working for the Yankee Dollar - The Skids

Monday - Northern Ireland/Ireland
Bryan Ferry's version of 'Carrickfergus'

Bryan Ferry 'The Lambton Worm' a Geordie folk song. Bryan Ferry's recording of 'Shakespeare's Sonnet 18' two quintessential Englishmen
Wednesday - Wales

Ireland:
North and South of the River (co-written by Christy Moore & Bono and recorded by both; I think the Christy version's better than the U2)
Goats Don't Shave: Las Vegas in Donegal
Hothouse Flowers: It'll be easier in the Morning
Van Morrison: Cleaning Windows (cos it's one of the few tracks you can hear his accent)
Sawdoctors: Joyce Country Ceili Band
Sinead O'Connor: Heroine (theme from Captive - a brilliant collaboration with the Edge)
Fathers Ted Crilley & Dougal McGuire: My Lovely Horse
The Divine Comedy: Songs of Love (aka the Father Ted theme tune)
Neil Hannon: So Long and Thanks for All The Fish (from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy soundtrack)
OK, I admit it - the last 3 are all essentially the same artiste...
Bob Geldof: The Great Song of Indifference
Philip Chevron (aka Spider from the Pogues): Thousands are Sailing (a better version than the full Pogues monty)
Paul Brady: The Island
If you *have* to do Clannad, please at least do the Planet Heaven remix of Caislean Oir
Would Simple Minds' Belfast Child be stretching it? Particularly as it's to a rather nice melody (She Moves Through the Fair)
Where would you put the Waterboys? Scotland or Ireland?
If the latter, then please please their interpretation of Yeats' The Stolen Child.
Actually, there's a whole album of Yeats interpretations, from which any of the following would be ace:
* Shane MacGowan: An Irish Airman forsees his Death
* Sinead Lohan: The Fish
* Nervous: He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven
* The Cranberries: Yeats' Grave

Had a week away enjoying the delights of the Black Isle etc., north of Inverness and stayed away from computers – Radio Scotland reception is pretty atrocious as you wander the hills and glens.
My suggestions for Ireland tonight:
Van Morrison so many that could be played so I’ll basically endorse what everyone else has asked for, and ditto on the Undertones
The Irish Rover – Pogues and Dubliners
The Sun Does Rise - Dolores O'Riordan & Jah Wobble
And now someone is making noises that I should do some work, maybe later.

England: '1952 Vincent Black Lightning' by Richard Thomson. I've never seen an artist get a standing ovation DURING a song before.
Ireland: 'Bright Side Of The Road' by Van Morrison. Wonderful upbeat opening track to 'Into The Music'. The rest of the album is dark and dismal though.
Scotland: 'Daddy's Gone' by Glasvegas. These guys are doing well by being unashamedly Scottish, singing in Scottish accents, but are not marginalised or seen as a novelty like The Proclaimers.
Wales: 'Designed For Life' by The Manic Street Preachers. It doesn't seem to date, and it still sounds as good today as it first did.

What happened??? I was busy last week (including a guid night out at Nick Cave in Edinburgh), and then switch on today to find war breaking out (at least in the earlier entries, I couldn't be bothered reading through all 124). Sorry if this repeats anything:
Ireland - Damien Dempsey "Ghosts of Overdoses"
Scotland - John Martyn "May You Never" (the one from Solid Air, and NOT any of the live versions or re-recorded ones from latter years);

Not having had any broadband for a week I've missed out on the show and the blog until now. That's a lot of reading to catch up on!
There are some good suggestions in there for tonight (Monday)and I'd just like to second/third/fourth:
BRYAN FERRY - Carrickfergus
U2 -Sunday Bloody Sunday, and
SIMPLE MINDS - Belfast Girl
Another couple I'd like to throw in are:
MARY BLACK - Eric Bogle's "My Youngest Son Came Home Today" and
THE UNDERTONES - Teenage Kicks.

Previous comments accepted, I still think the following are valid representations of each nation:
Monday
Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabyes
(Dave King was born in Dublin)
Tuesday
XTC - Love on a Farmboys Wages
Wednesday
The Alarm - 68 Guns
(Although Danielle from Canada shout for Young Marble Giants is a great one!)
Thursday
Jesse Rae - Over the Sea
(I have it on 7" and listened to it again, and no it is not as good as I remember it being, but don't let that put you off Bryan!)
And while we're on the theme, when are we gonna get to hear our own great Geoff Martyn on GIO? The song "Moonshine" on the Jupiter and Teardrop EP is just fabulous!
Oh, and I second Ivor Cutler whoever posted that one....

Julie: totally agree - the best shows are ones where it's a mix of "ooh, I've not heard this in *ages*!" and "hey, that's *cool*!" and I end up buying a couple of new tracks from A Wellknown (and legal) Online Music Store.
Last week: the Slits, the Doobie Brothers and I tried to buy The Dead End Kids, but they didnae have it. Which was a shame, as that's the version I remember from my younger days, rather than versions by better known artistes.
Not sure if the Wellknown Online Music Store not having the track makes it better or worse...

Kirsty: It seems that Billy Bragg is the anti-Mozza as far as GiO is concerned - been begging for some BB for ages without success.
But if we don't get some tomorrow, then something has gone far, far wrong, as there isn't a songwriter out there more intimately entangled in what it means to be positively English than Lord William of Bragg.
Good couple of choices there; I'd add:
* Tear Down the Union Jack
* Blake's Jerusalem
* St Swithin's Day (Henry V bonus link)
* The Saturday Boy
which is unmistakably English in a really deep sense, and showcases Billy's non-political side (which I think is even stronger).

CaptRamius, Bryan played Billy Bragg's "Greetings To The New Brunette" the other week on ... erm ... now I can't remember what the theme was, but I do remember being particularly happy about cos it seems that otherwise GIO has a shortage of Braggdom, and "New Brunette" is one of my all-time favorite BB tracks.

Bryan, great show tonight (apart from no Sinead singing Raglan Road)
Not sure tomorrows show will be so good; the country's too big, the population argue about their own identity and culture is too diverse to get a proper 'feel'. You could do an entire show focussed on the Mersey (& try telling a Geordie or a Bristolian that they're the same as Liverpudlians!)
However, I'm sure you'll give it a good go.

Julie,
I was down at the front left hand side leaning against the wall.I was having a few red wines brought to me so the wall came in very handy later on.First time at that venue.very atmospheric.

@233 Reason for 'Delilah' - it's the Welsh rugby fans' song. No, I don't know why, either.
Reason to play Feeder - none, unless you want to demonstrate what the most mediocre band in the world sounds like. I'd honestly rather hear 'Crazy Chick' by Charlotte Church - she's got one more decent pop song than Feeder have. Or Duffy. Cos you hardly ever hear her on the radio. ;-D

Could also play John Cale's "Fear is a Man's Best Friend" which is very good.
And could even play the grand Billy Bragg version too, just to try and bump up the GiO Bragg-quota now that the team have learned where to find Billy's stuff ;-)

evening all
I must admit I am still surprised that we didn't hear ANY Sinead O'Connor on Monday night...hey ho....
Onwards and upwards
Suggestions for Thursday's Scottish theme;
Aberfeldy - Summers Gone
Sons and Daughters - Johnny Cash
Edwyn Collins - Home Again (can't help but feel emotional when I hear this song)
Hobotalk - I've Seen Some Things
Emma Pollock - Paper and Glue (FANTASTIC!! If you haven't checked out any of Emma's solo stuff then please please do!!)
Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane
I was going to request some Arab Strap or Malcolm Middleton but I am guessing they are not very GIO friendly.....
Maria
p.s are we going to break a record of number of blogs on one thread this week?!!

@241 - 'The First Big Weekend' - Arab Strap?
I thought the same as you, but I just got something played for the first time so I'm feeling lucky! That song mentions Scotland v England and was on a Guinness ad, so it does tie in with the theme.
'Beep Beep I Love You' by Malcolm Middleton could work too.
Anyway, it's good to see some 90s indie getting a look in, like a few of my suggestions from #220. I used to think there was a cut-off point for this show at 1989!

Chance – Big Country
Rocks – Primal Scream
Head Rolls Off –Frightened Rabbit
Portree Kid (or is The Teuchters that come frae Skye?) – Corries

What about something from The Lost Soul Band? I asked a while back about a song that mentioned Penicuik (Sir John Clerk's Estate specifically) and one blogger told me the title but I've forgotten it. Anyone remember?
Or there's Gordon Grahame, in the guise of Lucky Jim, with his bread-advert song "Lovely to Me", which is actually a nice wee song.

Life is returning and my brain is starting to be useful again. How could I forget SAHB, Edwyn Collins, Aztec Camera, Orange Juice etc. All of the aformentioned have already had request and I'll second any of them, same for Belle and Sebastian, Arab Strap. As long as we avoid Bay City Rollers and the like I'll be a happy man.

Looks like a simple one song per night with no embellishments post has NIL effect :-( so I'll now embellish:
John Martyn, as I have commented before, should be the King of Scotland. Tender or angry, blissed out or rolling about in the depths of his stupid humanity, Big John has produced so much good music over the years that it's a crime he's not better recognised. The one song that most people will click to is "May You Never", covered by Clapton, but never bettered either by others or by John himself when he's attempted to re-record it in more mellow mode. The song on "Solid Air" is basically just JM and a guitar - I've had the privilege if seeing him doing it live a number of times over the years, and I'm sure it's a bit of a curse to him now (especially as his fingers arenae so agile as they used to be). But the man in his pomp is almost impossible to beat. Get it on, Bryan!
PS - Ali & Winters, are you off to Glasgow tonight for the Hawks? I'm down in Newcastle tomorrow, so's I don't have to get up and work the morning after. New guitarist, Tim Blake and (I think) HLL supporting! Should be good :-)

This looks as though it will be a big improvement on Welsh night (but thanks for Velvet Underground).
Jack Bruce - Theme for an Imaginary Western would be my first pick.
Second pick from any of the following:
Cado Belle (with Maggie Reilly) - Airport Shutdown
Stone the Crows - Blind Man
Donovan - Universal Soldier
King Creosote - Admiral
Belle and Sebastian - Piazza, New York Catcher
SAHB - Mrs Blackhouse (didn't remember it - but heard it on Ian Anderson last week!)
Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way
Ballboy - Olympic Cyclist

Thanks Jan, but unfortunately I can't get myspace at work and won't be home till after the show is finished.
My final suggestions for SCOTLAND:
Emily Smith - "Sunset Hymn" (just a lovely, happy-feeling song by a singer with a beautiful, clear voice).
Humblebums - "Look Over The Hill And Far Away". Heard this the other night on the Mark Lammar show on BBC2. A Gerry Rafferty song - as opposed a Billy Connolly one.
Something (preferably the one I talked about in an earlier blog) by The Lost Soul Band, or "Lovely to Me" by Lucky Jim
Wolfstone - "Tall Ships".
SAHB - Giddy Up a Ding Dong - I love when Alex Harvey gets all wavery-voiced at the end of a song as if he's put every iota of effort into it.

Jan, I meant to say that the Lost Soul Band is interesting to me as I was at the same school as a couple of band members and am a friend of a friend so-to-speak. Always interesting to see locals who achieve even a modicum of fame. More street cred than the guy from The Wurzels!!!

SCOTLAND
The Proclaimers(naturally)
Caledonia - Dougie McLean
Both Sides of the Tweed - Dick Gaughan
(gets my vote for a new scottish national anthem. Discuss!)
Bonny Woodha' - Dick Gaughan (heartbreaking song about a soldier dying on a battlefield)
World Turned Upside Down - Dick Gaughan
Cod Liver Oil and Orange Juice - Hamish Imlach
The Yew Tree - Battlefield Band
The John McLean March - North Sea Gas
Ye JAcobites by Name - North Sea Gas(notable for being a song CONDEMMING the Jacobite cause)

Just heard Aneka (Mary Sandeman) doing Japanese Boy in the opening montage tonight - I've played on stage with Mary and I have to say there is not a nicer lady in the business. Her attention to detail in Gaelic singing is flawless!
I actualy rate Japanese Boy - it's not a bad pop song at all, being of it's time as so many records are. It's a pity she blew the pop career spectacularly in the Wogan interview... I would have liked to hear a second album! Great lady - great memories. Slainge!

It was me that requested Richard Hawley on Tuesday night and I am not ashamed to admit that I sat listening to it with goosebumps all over and a little lump in my throat! No matter how many times I hear that track it never fails to make me feel so emotional...not in a sad or happy way if you know what I mean, it just gets me right there!
I have seen Mr Hawley live twice now and he is just amazing. A real entertainer with a velvet voice, perfect.
Sorry, gush over ;-)

Yay - over 300 comments on a post..!
Anyway, while driving into the place of slavery this morning, and listening to Tracy Ullman's Breakaway, it occurred to me how annoying I think it is when singers sing in a bland, standardised faux-American accent, rather than using their own.
It's kinda the reverse of what they strove for in the Committments: "Roide, Sally Roide"
So here's an idea for a theme: The Accent's On The Singer - songs where you can hear the singer's *own* accent.
So obviously the Proclaimers, The Streets, Billy Bragg, Feargal Sharkey, David Gilmour, some Beatles, Blur, Humblebums, early Dylan (it may be American, but it's his own accent, not the homogenised one), the Pogues, Madness etc.
You get where I'm coming from?

Capt! That sounds a good theme. Some eraly Bowie would fit.

Hi Norrie
I am sure you won't be disappointed with Mr Hawleys CD, I do recommend the earlier stuff too..I always think the first album you acquire from someone you learn to love is always the best!

Great news re tickets Norrie, I am jealous! And yes, it was a great gig at Playhouse. My mate was at the front and had the mic when Moz passed it into the audience, I was so proud ;-)
Anyway, perhaps we should save this chat for Jan 17th when the others can tune out and we can Moz Adore in private?! :-)
Can I just say what a great show it was on Thursday night?! I have just "listened again" and there was something for everyone I think and was glad to see that it wasn't just the obvious choices, some mutual back slapping for all GIO listeners - good work!
Happy weekend everyone, I am back down the road to Birmingham for a visit to family and friends...Norrie, I fear I will be hitting the red with you ;-)
