Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 10:03 UK time, Saturday, 22 November 2008

After another busy week of GIO it's time once again to start thinking about next week's themes. Have a look at these and post your suggestions on the blog or email me at the usual address...

disc.jpg

Monday
Alex in Glasgow suggested 'weight' as a theme for tonight. That could mean anything from 16 Tons to He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother. If you are thinking about a pre-Christmas diet then you are sure to be inspired by tonight's show....

Tuesday
Shake, Rattle and Roll is the time tonight. I can think of a certain Welsh rock n roll legend who is bound to make an appearance, but get in touch and let me know what else you want to hear...

Wednesday
Another two parter this week. Girl bands is the theme tonight....

Thursday
....Which means it's boy bands tonight, but please don't think I mean two hours of Westlife! Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles and other bands with 'boys' in them will all feature. E-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk or leave your suggestion on the blog...

    She taps all your tabs
    Babs

(I assume this is entirely untrue as I have no way of knowing if the real Ms Babs likes kebabs or taps all your tabs. Maybe we'll find out on the show.)

    Monday

Nine Pound Hammer - Merle Travis

I guess this song isn't as well known as Travis' 16 tonnes (thanks to the 'Tennessee' Ernie Ford cover) but I still think it's a great wee song. Merle Travis was a tremendous guitar player who pioneered Travis picking (playing a steady boom-chick accompaniment using the thumb pick whilst using the other fingers on the right hand to play the melody) which Chet Atkins took forward considerably. Actually I've got a front row ticket to see Tommy Emmanuel tonight who is IMO the finest guitarist in the world (who plays in this style) - so I'll probably miss the second half of GIO.

    Heavy Metal Drummer - Wilco

Weightlifting - Trashcan Sinatras. I have to say I far prefer Francis Reader's singing to that of his sister. And to Cerys Mathews.

    Tuesday

I'll take the bait - Green Door by Shakin Stevens. I remember at the time wondering how music could ever be any greater than this.

No producer worth their salt will ever do one of these shows without such preparation! On top of that all they do is add in stuff that is requested that is better than what was assumed to be likely to be on people's lists.

Ergo, keep sending them lists in advance of the shows and your requests will be more likely to be played, and you'll get a name check if you have asked for something they are already intending to play!

Hi Danielle. To clear up this pavey thing... Yes cou correctly identified the words pavey/pikey as to do with travelling folk. In the Old Scots, a pikey/piker/pikeman etc was a 'light-fingered' individual not to be trusted - often applied to travelling folk and anyone else considered to be disreptubale and untrustworthy. It was NOT a good thing to be known as a pikey in any situation!

However the word pavey as used today in the Modren Scots is more or less simply a siminutive of the English word pavement familiar to us all. Thus it may well not appear correctly in many online dictionaries, most of which in my esperience are missing MANY words that really should be there - including some of the proper academic ones, and one in particular where the word 'byke' could not be explained... DC - wanna chime in there?????? :-)

For me, the proper word for a pavement in Modren Scots is 'causey', but I would certainly not hesitate to use the word 'pavement' which has been in the Scots language, in any case, since before written records began, as it's ultimately Latin and Midle English, but I won't bore you with that... For English Night I'd go for something by The Albion Band who have a most English name (though pedants may disgree). I have a copy of their single "Poor Old Horse" from about 1978, which I'm sure I heard via the John Peel Show, although I have read it had the dubious honour of being Simon Bates's record of the week when it was released!!! Don't know that much about them although I know a bit about the various band-members (the band has a great "family-tree"). I believe that single(or perhaps the album version) has backing singers including Julie Covington, Richard and Linda Thompson and a McGarrigle. Bet another blogger will know...

Capt Ramius. I'll second your bids for Imagined Village - caught some of their performance at the Cambridge Folk Festival on TV and they look very interesting, especially with Benjamin Zephania. Not always that keen on the Martin Carthy, hand-cupped-round-the-ear school of English folk but this was good (same goes for my Albion Band bid from previous post I suppose :0)).

I also like Bill Bailey's Unisex Chipshop...especially when performed with Billy Bragg.

Yeah, Imagined Village is pretty much the antithesis of the hand-cupped school.

Funny thing is: Martin Carthy's integral to Imagined Village, along with his daughter, the rather ravishing Eliza.

The other interesting thing is that they made a pack of the source recordings of 'Cold Hailey Rainy Night' available for download and remix via Gabriel's Real World network

If I may blow me own trumpet for a moment...

Poor Old Horse is a great record.

It's got a good tune, talented musicians and humour.

Julie - I'm sure if the timings for flights could be arranged AFR would be first through the door, but Rio is just a tad further away than Auld Reekie.

You lot are getting awfy wound up about next weeks themes.

AFR just apply good sound GIO sense to the themes. It disnae matter where/who or what the theme is just send in any old request and it's likely to get played.

    Morrisey for the Limeys
    Proclaimers for the Jocks
    Cerys Mathews for the Taffs
    Fergal Sharkey for the Paddies

    Job done.

For Wales I'm recommending "No Matter What" by Badfinger. They also wrote "Without You" but the band's story is tragic.
