Next week's themes...
After another busy week of GIO it's time once again to start thinking about next week's themes. Have a look at these and post your suggestions on the blog or email me at the usual address...
Monday
Alex in Glasgow suggested 'weight' as a theme for tonight. That could mean anything from 16 Tons to He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother. If you are thinking about a pre-Christmas diet then you are sure to be inspired by tonight's show....
Tuesday
Shake, Rattle and Roll is the time tonight. I can think of a certain Welsh rock n roll legend who is bound to make an appearance, but get in touch and let me know what else you want to hear...
Wednesday
Another two parter this week. Girl bands is the theme tonight....
Thursday
....Which means it's boy bands tonight, but please don't think I mean two hours of Westlife! Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles and other bands with 'boys' in them will all feature. E-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk or leave your suggestion on the blog...

WEDNESDAY
Many moons ago, I went to the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow to hear an all-female Country band, who called themselves the 'Well-Oiled Girls'
It took me a while to realise that I was the only man in the place who wasn't a woman.
The music was rather good.
Plus, no queue for the Gents.

Ah, that old chestnut is STILL your best eh, Glenn!
Mon.
Skin Flint - Symarip
Tues.
Tennessee Rock n' Roll - Shakin' Pyramids

Scotch - are you sure it was not the Indigo Girls who I have seen many times, and actually went for cofee with in Edinburgh one day but that is another strory, and yes your comments about the toilet queue were applicable every time I have seen them.
Great though, love them So how about and Indigo Girls week except boy band might beat me ...
Mon - Shed This Skin
Tues - Rock N Roll Heavens Gate
Wed - Gallileo (always in my top ten tracks, with wonderful harmony from Jackson Browne and David Crosby)
Thursday - Clampdown (their cover of the Clash classic)!
And if it was not the Indigo Girls - never mind still good songs!

I am ashamed Danielle - I have Nomads on, I dont think I have ever listened to it properly before and it is outstanding!
First time I saw Indigo Girls was a s support act to 10,000 Maniacs 27 May 89, not a bad gig!!

I can't wait for girl bands on Wednesday!
Of course you've got to play the Bangles, but how about one of their lesser-known tracks, like their excellent cover of Elvis Costello's "Tear Off Your Own Head" or Big Star's "September Gurls", both of which are better than the originals?
And I'd love to hear "America Blue" or anything else by my favorite Scottish girl band, His Latest Flame.

Scotch-git: I think I've found your band 'The Well Oiled Sisters'. An article I read states:
The Sisters were thrust into the spotlight when Morrissey spotted them and promptly signed them up for his "Up Yer Arsenal European Tour".

No Choplet yet, Norrie - just got a bit snowed under last week hence no posting. Did I hear right? Can we get signed photos of Bryan and the delightful Ms Babs? Can I get one sent to Mr Chops the Dwarf, 13 Mordor, Middle Earth etc. Ta! I was thinking of things that rhyme with Babs this morning whilst walking the mutt.
She likes kebabs
She taps all your tabs
Babs
(I assume this is entirely untrue as I have no way of knowing if the real Ms Babs likes kebabs or taps all your tabs. Maybe we'll find out on the show.)
Monday
Nine Pound Hammer - Merle Travis
I guess this song isn't as well known as Travis' 16 tonnes (thanks to the 'Tennessee' Ernie Ford cover) but I still think it's a great wee song. Merle Travis was a tremendous guitar player who pioneered Travis picking (playing a steady boom-chick accompaniment using the thumb pick whilst using the other fingers on the right hand to play the melody) which Chet Atkins took forward considerably. Actually I've got a front row ticket to see Tommy Emmanuel tonight who is IMO the finest guitarist in the world (who plays in this style) - so I'll probably miss the second half of GIO.
Heavy Metal Drummer - Wilco
Weightlifting - Trashcan Sinatras. I have to say I far prefer Francis Reader's singing to that of his sister. And to Cerys Mathews.
Tuesday
I'll take the bait - Green Door by Shakin Stevens. I remember at the time wondering how music could ever be any greater than this.
Wednesday

I think Babs is to blame, (and I'm not being cheeky), she did say "Oh yes we have to play that, its a great track." (or something like that).
And they cant use the excuse that loads of people asked for it, coz it didnt stop them from not playing Because the Night on Thursday. Eh Norrie?

I'll bet BB would love to play more of the stuff being requested but the Wifies in charge won't let him. (Henpecked)
Bet they have their playlists made up well in advance. Could be why there are so many repeat themes.
Complain about this comment
Maybe its the bloke they invited in for the buffet?
Complain about this comment
EC #108 - Of course they have advance playlists... That's just a good producer making sure they are well prepared to make a good show. No producer worth their salt will ever do one of these shows without such preparation! On top of that all they do is add in stuff that is requested that is better than what was assumed to be likely to be on people's lists.
Ergo, keep sending them lists in advance of the shows and your requests will be more likely to be played, and you'll get a name check if you have asked for something they are already intending to play!
:-)
Complain about this comment
What!!! Preparation! It will never seem the same again. :o(

JFE - I stand corrected. (now suitably chastised)
I know they plan the playlists in advance but before they've announced the themes for the week is stretching it a bit.
Now what Theme would get your juices flowing - maybe we need to know.
Complain about this comment
EC - What I meant was they plan what they are doing before the show starts - I realise that they take requests but they must have a rough idea of what to have ready so it's not too hard to find stuff when it's asked for... A mate of mine is a radio producer - so I have a pretty good idea how it works. If 'turning up blind' is going to be a theme in itself, then it follows logically that that is not the norm...
As for themes, I really hope they go for my aforementioned theme suggestion of Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales done on consecutive nights! That would be brilliant!
Complain about this comment
Do you mean artists from those countries?

Yes we could have Vettriano.

Still a nice thought though. Perhaps I'm just needing a holiday. I still say go for the triple!
Complain about this comment
Hi Danielle. To clear up this pavey thing... Yes cou correctly identified the words pavey/pikey as to do with travelling folk. In the Old Scots, a pikey/piker/pikeman etc was a 'light-fingered' individual not to be trusted - often applied to travelling folk and anyone else considered to be disreptubale and untrustworthy. It was NOT a good thing to be known as a pikey in any situation!
However the word pavey as used today in the Modren Scots is more or less simply a siminutive of the English word pavement familiar to us all. Thus it may well not appear correctly in many online dictionaries, most of which in my esperience are missing MANY words that really should be there - including some of the proper academic ones, and one in particular where the word 'byke' could not be explained... DC - wanna chime in there?????? :-)
For me, the proper word for a pavement in Modren Scots is 'causey', but I would certainly not hesitate to use the word 'pavement' which has been in the Scots language, in any case, since before written records began, as it's ultimately Latin and Midle English, but I won't bore you with that... LOL

@glenmillar #214:
Spot on with the Thompson - "artistes from England" is a bit too wide; I reckon tracks should have some actual sense of Englishness as well.
So I'd expect a good scattering from:
Billy Bragg - who's been thinking about English nationalism for a while:
* Tear Down the Union Jack
* New England
* England Half English
* Blake's Jerusalem
* St Swithin's Day (Henry V bonus link)
* The Saturday Boy
or the other BB - Bill Bailey:
* Unisex Chipshop (which is a Billy Bragg tribute)
Fairport Convention:
* Red and Gold (it's about the English Civil War)
The Streets (who I reckon is his generation's Billy Bragg)
* Dry Your Eyes
The Strawbs: * Part of the Union (very English reworking of Pete Seegar's Union Maid)
Sting: * Englishman in New York (shame about the silly drum break)
Robert Wyatt: Shipbuilding
Elvis Costello: Oliver's Army
(although Mr C can also be considered Irish... see the Pogues for more info)
Anything from the Imagined Village
http://imaginedvillage.com/audiovideo/
You've got the choice of Messrs Weller, Bragg (again, sorry), Zephaniah plus a whole load of Anglo-Asian and Anglo-Anglo stars.
Some early Floyd or Syd Barrett would be good: Bike? The Gnome? Corporal Clegg?
And for a laugh:
Spinal Tap: Stonehenge or America
Finally, I'm sure we're going to have to endure 3 Lions... actually, it's not a bad song, once you get past the "England football supporting" thing.
