Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 11:37 UK time, Sunday, 16 November 2008

Thanks to everyone who supported Children In Need last week and a special thank you to the regulars who came down to say hello on Friday night. I am looking forward to getting 'back to normal' this week and I think we've got some good themes lined up for you...

stonethecrows.jpg

Monday:
Mine is 'Judy Garland', Barbara's is 'Maggie Bell' and Kirsten's is 'John Paul Jones from Led Zep...but who was born on your birthday? That's the theme for tonight as we look forward to BBC Radio Scotland's 30th. Text or call during the show or why not leave a comment on the blog and if you can't think of one tell us what day you were born on and we'll find you a celebrity to blow out the candles with...

Tuesday:

Julie in the Borders suggested 'first' and 'last' as a theme. Tonight we'll do First Kiss and First Time Ever I Saw Your Face....

Wednesday:

...which means tonight we'll do Always The Last To Know. What do you want to hear? Email your suggestions to getiton@bbc.co.uk

Thursday:

BBC Radio Scotland is 30 years old at the weekend so tonight we turn back the clock to the year we came on air. 1978 is the theme so e-mail or blog with your memories of '78.

GIO Team - I thought last weeks shows were fantastic, it was obviously very hard work for you all so well done!

I am very lucky to have 2 good artists for 14 Decemeber:

Mike Scott, Waterboys - Whole of The Moon is always a great song to hear but a bit overplayed so how about The Big Music as it features Eddie Reader or The Thrill Is Gone which is my favourite Waterboys track.

Beth Orton - she plays an absolutely great cover of Stolen Car. Would love to hear that.

May I make Bowie and Elvis picks for them (8 January):

Elvis picks Golden Years as Bowie apparently wrote this for him.

    Bowie picks - Little Sister.

I'll second Norries comments re last week, great shows and well done to all the team.

I share my birthday with Chris Cornell so I would love to hear "Jesus Christ Pose" by Soundgarden but as something a little more listener friendly I would settle for "Black Hole Sun" which is also a great track.

    Thanks

    Maria

p.s. My birthday is July 20th :-) Remember after first singles and occupations I said it felt like a first date? Here we go again!

Not quite so much on the music front:

Rudy Vallee...about whom I know nothing except that he used to sing through a megaphone.

Rachel Sweet - born on exactly the same day as me. Her most well-known song is probably B.A.B.Y but she also sang the theme tune to the original, John Waters version of Hairspray which is fun.

Peter Doyle of The New Seekers - "Never Ending Song of Love" reminds me of car journeys with my two sisters and us trying to recreate the harmonies in the chorus.

Bit more street-cred with Mike Bloomfield, guitarist on Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited".

The daughter (who wishes to remain nameless) shares a birthday with Mick Jones of The Clash (and also with Scotch Git!!!). She would like to hear "Should I Stay Or Should I Go".

One other possibility for 26 June is Georgie Fame. Sitting in the Park or Moody's Mood for Love would be fine (but not Yeh, Yeh - please).

Finding out who you share your birthday has been quite interesting. I don't think that I really want to hear Serge Gainsborough or Bananarama (Keren Woodward) so it comes down to a choice between Emmylou Harris or Marvin Gaye.

Despite my leanings towards country music, Emmylou has to lose out - but only because she is 5 years older than me but looks 10 years younger!

Marvin Gaye has put out some great stuff but how about "Abaham, Martin and John" which doesn't get a lot of airplay but, to me, is a better version than Dion's.

BobbyfromHowood great call on Alison by Elvis Costello fro 1978, one of my all time favourites, though it totally failed to impress a young lady of that name in Miami in 1980. Glad you reminded me it was 1978, my memories of late seventies early 80's are pretty hazy due too far too much partying.

Jimfraeerskine Linda Ronstadt in roller skates was on the album Living in the USA and like many of her covers and pictures was enough to get a young man’s hormones in overdrive!. I think she gets a lot of unfair criticism these days. She did some good stuff including a version of First Cut is the Deepest, but at the moment I can’t remember if it’s god enough to consider before PP Arnold

"Whoops a Daisy" by Humphrey Ocean and the Hardy Annuals. It was a fascinating year as disco, punk, new wave, straight rock, glam were all co-existing in the charts quite happily!

Norries favourite album of the time and still a classic was Bob Dylan and Street Legal, the lead single and would be great to hear Baby Stop Crying.

With only a couple of exceptions and two more passables the Number 1's of 1978 were dreadful and i can disticntly remember the cheer when the Rats kicked John travolta and Olivia off Number One! (having said that i did queue! to get in to see Grease - oh dear)

There was also some cracking stuff and I would like any and all of these to be played, many of which have already been requested, so hopefully numbers will count.

I note some Sex Pistols requests, but weren’t they all in 1977?

Alison – Elvis Costello (as previously posted one of my all time favourites)
Werewolves of London – Warren Zevon (an absolute must!!!)
Changing of the Guards - Bob Dylan (from the much underrated Street Legal)
Badlands – Bruce Springsteen (great album)
Hearts of Stone – Southside Johnny
Down at the Doctors – Dr Feelgood (we need more of the Dr on GIO, and of course this song includes the wonderful line ‘Eight bars of piano’ - followed by no piano! I think I remember Lee Brilleaux explaining that their manager played the piano, as a favour to him, and after recording they decided his playing just wasn’t up to it, but they left the line in)
Denis – Blondie (hormones on overdrive!)
Teenage Kicks – Undertones (shouldn’t this be compulsory?)
    Psycho Killer – Talking Heads
    Public Image – Public Image
Pump it Up – Elvis Costello
Because the Night – Patti Smith
I Love the Nightlife – Alicia Bridges (no, it’s not a great song, but purely to hear her sing ‘ackshon’)

And no queen, even by their standards their contribution in 78 was truly dire.

And stop mentioning the world cup! I had managed to exorcise that from the memory of records etc., 78, but not now!!!! I still remember opening a can of lager as Scotland kicked off against Iran - and still having the same can, sans one small sip at the end. In fact I can’t remember if I came round enough to finish that can before it went off. And that brief moment of hope against Holland, all too painful.

A post I was thinking about this morning on the way to work (see what you're doing to us, Bryan?) -

1977 is considered to be the "punk year", but looking at a lot of the postings shows that '77 was the parent to a hell of a lot of artistic endeavour / activity which has probably stood the test of time just as well. The early punk stuff had energy but maybe not too much finesse, whereas those coming along slightly behind had probably had to take a bit longer to adapt their previous art-school image and songs to the new regime. But XTC, The Only Ones, The Rezillos, The Skids, Wire, The Buzzcocks (early, but formed after seeing the Pistols), Talking Heads, The Undertones, even The Jam, Gang of Four, Magazine, The Pop Group, etc etc all produced some great stuff. It's going to be (potentially) a very good show tonight, maybe we should have tried to break it down into "78 New Wave", "78 AOR", "78 Mid 70s Crap That Didn't Know When to Give Up"?

It didn't really all go wrong until the end of 2-tone IMHO, just when I finally escaped from my rural backwater to the fine capital city we have. And what was coming through???? CULTURE CLUB? SPANDAU BALLET??? DURAN DURAN????? It was enough to make a grown student weep. Luckily, there was always Hawkwind and Mr John Martyn.

Probably saw yer man Tommy at a few of the former's gigs from '82-87, Ali :-)

glen/ scotch/ dykerlad - not Elvis fans then?

Ali - Black Sword at the Playhouse? Classic gig! I vaguely remember the 87 one being ok as well, though I've since found out that Robert Calvert was playing solo in Carlisle the same night, which would have been a shorter journey, and a chance to have seen him. Doh!

It was a bit of a curate's egg last night right enough, certainly not what I remember about '78, though if you look at the charts from the time, for every Strangler, there's a Bee Gee. Some editorial control might be in order (and less o' that country stuff, Bryan?)

Par for the course these days.

How often does the show truly follow the theme?

Don't think the boys object to Elvis, just having a bit of fun at his lack of musical input in 1978.

And can I just point out that I manfully resisted the temptation to rant about that travesty of a Millie Jackson duet that got played instead of the wondrous "Summer (The First Time)"?

Fortunately I had left the room when it came on, and was too busy wondering who was murdering what was a fairly awful song to start with, to realise that a biiig mistake had been made!

Cheers for Joni Mitchell though. :-)

    Ali #179,

Actually there are very few Elvis tracks I like, but EC has it spot on. The chance to have a bit of blog banter while quoting Elvis tracks proved too much to resist for the (American) trilogy....

    JFE #177,

Plastic Letters was a great and under-rated album in my opinion. Denis and Always touched by your presence dear being the best of the bunch. These tunes were hits in 78 and converted me from Ralph McTell / Gerry Rafferty to this style of music.

Actually, I tell I lie. I just lusted after Debbie Harry............................. ;-)

Harry, Black Sword gig was excellent and 87 gig too despite repeatedly being told to sit down by Playhouse heavies! Have only ever seen Hawkwind at Playhouse, think Barrowlands would have been better.

PS Did you know they are playing 4 Dec at Carling Academy?
