Today is the birthday of Hank Williams who would have been 85 if he'd lived. We're celebrating his birthday tonight by making 'country covers' the theme. From Elvis Costello to The Stones many artists have dabbled in the world of C&W. If we get enough good suggestions I promise not to play my recording of Telly Savalas doing I Walk The Line...

With Elbow having just won the Mercury music prize it seems a good time to return to the popular theme of 'body parts'. From Lyin' Eyes to The Back of Love there's plenty of parts to choose from, I just urge you to keep it clean. I am still recovering from my Ken Dodd trauma of last time...

Sorry that was probably a bit unfair......anyway an absolue must surely is Willie Nelson's superb Angel Flying Too Close To the Ground, one of the all time great performances and an original which has never been bettered. There are cover versions by some brilliant artists Raul Malo, Patty Griffin, Bob Dylan, Patty Griffin and most recently Beth Rowley.

Monday - Got to have Rod doing Angel, and if you want a real treat you could dig out the version of him doing it as a duet with Denis Law. Its on the 1974 Scottish World Cup Album. Yabadaba do we support the boys in blue!

I'd say Devil Woman should be considered a must for the show on Monday. It's hip to be down on Cliff these days, but I remember Devil Woman as one of the best pop songs of the 1970's. He was on top form back then and knew how to make a good record.
I'd also like to suggest 'Tribute' by Tenacious D. It qualifies for several reasons:
1 - No swearing in it (as long as you play the radio edit which dips the vocal just at the right moment!)
2 - It has the Devil in it
3 - It's a fantastic song!

WEDNESDAY: Since you're celebrating Hank's birthday, you could play something from The The's album of Hank Williams covers - "Hanky Panky...or you could choose something (just a small excerpt might be best!) from "In Low Places" by The Chipmunks (including the likes of Alan Jackson and Billy Ray Cyrus). If you don't go for either of those choices I'll further suggest Ray Charles's cover of "I Can't Stop Loving You".

I know what your saying but sometimes enthusiasm takes over! Anyway having corectly told off for blogging on my hols I'm really trying hard to keep it to a couple of songs!
My first choice is by Jackson Browne, Of Missing persons, a tribute to his late friend Lowell George and written for George's daughters, really moving piece.
Another suggestion is Shine on You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd which was written for Syd barrett and would be fitting given the passing of Richard Wright today.

As well as being entirely necessary for programmes such as this, themed lists of tunes are FANTASTIC fun to compile. I never just Google mine - I love scratching my head for an hour or so during my lunches coming up with sometimes off the wall songs and checking them out on Youtube to see if they really are as good as I remember! Then we spend the afternoon in the office rocking it out to brilliant tracks ahead of the shows.

I think what EC is trying to say is that we could all generate long lists of songs per theme, but, maybe 90% of which you wouldnt necessarily want to hear. Keeping it to two or three would help you focus on the tracks you really want to get played and the reasons why. This would save us from scrolling down a long list only to find "just the last two please" at the end.

Just trying to get a fair crack of the whip for all. I'm sure we're all capable of flooding the blog with song titles but what would be the point.
We'll keep BB and Producer Mandi supplied with lots of good stuff, just need to be selective with the stuff we'd like to hear and not just any old tune, cos it happens to fit the theme.

Guys I was trying my hardest to remember some really GREAT tribute songs and I think I cannot top this one... 'Life Is Real' by Queen.
Mercury et al were massive Lennon fans (aren't we all) and when they recorded Life Is REal they decided to make it sound as if it could have been one of the Plastic Ono Band's more ballady numbers - complete with the echo on the vocal, and even some of Lennon's own phrasing style.
It's a very touching song and the lyrics really do get to the heart of the man.

For tonight I'd go for Kirsty McColl - There's a Guy Works down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis (Country Version). An example of a 'pop' artist doing a country cover of her own song.
When I bought the single (27 years ago!) I thought that the country version on the B-side was better than the 'pop' version.
Don't think I've heard it since, so it would be good to hear it tonight.

Country covers – should be a brilliant show.
I’m going to nominate some Van Morrison for tonight’s show. Rodney Crowell’s Till I Gain Control Again has been covered by quite a number of artists and is a great song and I think that Van did an outstanding version on his album of mostly country covers Pay The Devil. Another great version is by This Mortal Coil.
Van also covered I Can’t Stop Loving You on Hymns to the Silence.

Frank Zappa's got a very slightly rib-tickling country song on "You Are What You Is", though maybe not before 9pm.
This week, Matthew, I'm going to be "HalfManHalfBiscuit Harry", so can we have their version of "Old Tigue", just to make up for the Jim Reeves one?
Clapton's "No Reason to Cry" album was pretty much country-based, and in particular the track "Innocent Times" has a soulful, not to say glass-shattering, vocal by Marcy Levy (much) later to become Marcella Detroit of Shakespear's Sister.

Maria- disagree with you on the Carpetbaggers' song. I think Elvis's bit is good and draws your attention to a song that might otherwise have passed you by. Well not you maybe, but certainly me.

Adam...yeah, and not just repeat themes but "Angel of Harlem" 2 nights running this week!! It's up to us listeners to come up with interesting new themes though. I suppose folk who've not been listening for that long won't realise when a theme is a repeat one so will enjoy them regardless...and it could give those listeners prone to compiling lists a chance to get more records played (unless the same ones get played again that is :-)). I'm still waiting for my theme of bakery items to be picked - only cos I want to hear PANdora's box by Procul Harem (which I wish Bryan would pronounce correctly!!!).

Re Carpetbaggers - maybe you are right, at least I am remembering it even if it is for the wrong reasons! (a bit like the "new" Boyzone single, good God help us please music police) Julie, I agree, its up to us to think up some good ideas, I emailed one into the team this week. Need a good night in the pub at the weekend, that normally induces all sorts of interesting theme discussions!
