Musical Week: Leaderboard

Saturday 30 November 2013, 21:30

BBC Strictly Sarah BBC Strictly Sarah Strictly web team

It was curtains up on an all singing, all dancing Musical episode tonight. Our couples took centre stage to tread the boards of the ballroom, performing their routines to our favourite musical tunes.

The top billing of the night was Abbey and Aljaz’s sizzling Salsa which saw them awarded the first 40 of the series! We were starting to think Craig's ten paddle might never see the light of day!

Patrick and Anya's Charleston was the second highlight of the night, with Craig claiming that “the whole routine was spectacular.” They gained their highest score of the series with a whopping 38 points.

After performing their American Smooth, Natalie and Artem lost their place at the top of the Leaderboard, slipping to joint third place with Sophie and Brendan. It may be Artem’s favourite dance but Len said there was “too much swishing and not enough Foxtrot.”

Proving how much the competition has heated up, Mark and Iveta found themselves at the bottom of the Leaderboard with a very respectable 29 points for their Samba. With Craig claiming it was Mark’s best dance to date, we’re left wondering, who will be in the dance off tomorrow? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I really think the only judge who gave true scores tonight was Craig. Everyone else obviously has favourites rather than scoring by the quality of the dance.

I agree with HJG - I feel as though the judges are really pushing Patrick - why?. I am not very keen on either Patrick or Natalie as per Denise V.O last year. I love Strictly, but I think there were too many dancers this year. I think 12 couples is about the right number. I also think better songs/themes are given to some of the pairings. I think Ola and Ashley have been given the short straw this year, I mean a Cowboy theme for a Paso?? (last week)

Loved Patrick & Anya's Charleston. Full of fun and personality, got the show off on a brilliant note.
Brilliant interpretative choreography from Artem & Natalie. Glad he stayed true to the music rather than the strict Ballroom style and stuff pleasing Len.
Mark & Iveta - A really fun dance given the music & theme.
Sophie & Brendan - Best dance since their Charleston.
Abbey & Alijaz - Ok but what were the judges on with the marking. I have seen Kristina slated for choreographing too much disco into a dance, yet these two get 40 points.
Ashley & Ola. Nice Rumba especially given the very sweet music was not ideal for the true rumba style. Ashley arriving on a carpet was good prop use.
Susanne & Kevin. Why was this dance on last given that others had wow dances and have not been near the end of the show as often as these two? Lots of footwork mistakes and very all over the place.

Great costumes from Wardrobe for everyone tonight.

Yet again, there were some awful inconsisties with the comments and marking from the judges.

Patrick was OK, but overmarked by 1 point by D, L & B. 35 would have been a more realistic score, no way was that perfect despite how enjoyable it was.

Abbey got 40 for a disco prance that barely resembled a salsa. Probably the worst case of over-marking and favouritism ever. Disgraceful unprofessionalism from the judges here.

Natalie for once received some correct criticism from Len but the joker on the end unbelievably gave her an undeserved 10 because her dance was more like a show dance, it did not have enough American Smooth content, certainly nowhere near enough in hold, so how can that get a 10?

Susanna wasn't perfect tonight but deserved more than 7 from Craig. Her dance was no worse than Ashley's.

Sophie danced the most perfect VW you could ever wish to see. Unfortunately, the judges marked Brendan for answering back at them last week. Firstly, that is not fair on Sophie, secondly, it is unprofessional in the extreme to mark a dancer based on their disliking of Brendan. How the judges could go all gooey for a disco shimmy and yet totally overlook the perfection of Sophie's dance leaves me speechless (although I have a lot to say on the matter!) and quite frankly, I'm fuming that they continue to undermark Sophie while overmarking their favourites. That is just not acceptable in any kind of competition, no matter how light-hearted it is meant to be. Every dancer puts their heart and soul into what they do, so it must be so disheartening for Sophie to be constantly penalised and put down while others get away with it.

Although I enjoyed Mark and Iveta's dance very much, I do think they will be in the dance-off this week. I loved Sophie and Brendan's Viennese Waltz, and thought this was under marked compared to others.

Sophie being undermarked due to certain judges dislike of Brendon. Come on everyone, vote for the best dancer, SOPHIE

I totally agree about the judges having favourites and giving them 10's for making mistakes and overlooking head positions etc, yet being picky with people like Ashley and Sophie.... Ashley is always under-marked and is criticized for tiny things others get way with and then given 10's... shame on you judges.. Vote for Ashley to make up for this unfairness and I think in general he is a much better dancer overall than Patrick who the judges seem to favour.... mistakes and all......

So glad that Nat's routine was rightly down marked for lack of 'in hold'. Totally agree with Len that there was too much wafting about. 40 for Abbey? that was a lot more Night Fever than Latin fever, far to much disco styling, but then the judges will be protective of their favourites.
Susanna messed up tonight, hope it doesn't knock her confidence.
Ash's rumba was pretty good I thought, although I have to admit Ola's outfit rather than the routine grabbed my attention.
Sophie's VW was absolutely beautiful, was worth at least a couple of 10's imo.
Pat lived the Charleston, a really great routine.
Mark, sorry buddy but you're gone tonight. Good fun, but not QF material. You can go get your knees sorted now.

    @15
Yes vote on time when the voting window is open!

It's only open for about 15 or 20 minutes after the show finishes, they then have to count the votes and film and record the results show, which is then shown pre-recorded tomorrow night.

@15 Annipanni - you need to goto/open a tab on the Home page when voting is open - this week it was 2010-2035hrs (25 minutes). The list of couple is then on the page and you can select the first couple and vote. Then click 'Vote again' and select the couple you wish and vote once more. Do this until you've used your 5 votes.

Like many others here, week after week I try to fathom why Abbey usually gets the nod over Sophie and why Patrick receives unbridled praise while Ashley gets rubbished over some tiny glitch in his technique. I can't honestly see why the judges would bother to have favourites, especially ones that they've colluded on and agreed to support as an entity, so I'm kind of ruling that out.

Looking back at tonight's dances then, I'm starting to wonder if it's simply the difference between watching on TV (us) and sitting on the edge of the dance floor (the judges). The extra intimacy the judges experience will undoubtedly magnify things like 'coldness' and dancing mechanically without emotion. Conversely, the home audience might better appreciate the many-camera-angled outward physicality of the dance, for example, the fuller sweep of the dance floor, the speed of movement, and how exaggerated the arm flourishes are.

On tonight's performances, Patrick and Abbey looked more connected, natural and flowing, but on the downside, more sloppy and less elegant than Ashley and Sophie. So that would seem to fit my theory - it's all about perspective ... I think!

    @19 Col
It's a good analysis, but maybe over-analysed. I put it down to judging incomptence. They are unable to view all dancers fairly, they are not impartial, they find faults with some dances and then overmark them, they praise some dances and then undermark them, they find faults where there are not faults with some dancers and they overlook or fail to see faults in other dancers.

How can they get so many things wrong, so often? These are not one off mistakes they make, they consistently make these mistakes, so it can only be pure incompetence. They are simply not up to the job and it's time to have a complete overhaul of the panel and get some people in who know how to judge fairly and impartially.
