Just you and a hut

Simon Mayo Simon Mayo Presenter

Horrible school run completed, full of stupid drivers and their stupid cars. I of course was an oasis of calm and politeness. Things can only improve and here we are in the ordered world of the drivetime blog where decency prevails and everyone has a cheery word for everyone else. Even the moderator can join in if she/he wants to-hello moderator! There may be a few missing bloggers (as discussed yesterday) but it is still a good place to spend some time everyday. In my opinion. So well done for getting this far. If you read and don't normally say hi-thats fine too.
So today how about Kirsty Young from Desert Island Discs on todays show? Not only is it an iconic show but Kirsty is just the perfect host. Warm, informed and persistent-who could ask for more? The show has the simplest format but it inevitably drags you in and you play the 'well what I choose' game. There's a fascinating "70 Years of" book out that details every castaway's choices of music, luxury and book; good bedtime stuff. So we will do DESERT ISLAND oldies of course and why not add a song, a luxury and a book if you can think of any...
So that'll do. Have a positive and affirming Wednesday, see you after 5.

    Hi again Simon and everyone

I'm glad I don't do a school run like you mentioned, Simon, especially when I occasionally encounter the mums and their offspring in their gas-guzzling 4x4s clogging up the road... some who would only have a 5-minute walk, which in my day was fun.

Anyway, some songs for the lovely Kirsty Wark....

LIVING ON AN ISLAND ~ Status Quo

LADY OF THE ISLAND ~ Crosby, Stills and Nash

LISTEN TO THE OCEAN ~ Nina and Frederik

ON AN ISLAND ~ David Gilmour

ALL ALONE AM I ~ Brenda Lee

THE TIDE IS HIGH ~ Blondie

A whole new blog all to myself !

I'd have to go for LIVING ON AN ISLAND - STATUS QUO who were great on the Hyde Park 'festival in a day' on Sunday. Found there were highlights on the red button last night - worth a look if it's still live.

Gazza - #83 from yesterday - was it Phil Collins ?

One last 9/11 memory - a friend of mine flew out to Toronto on the 14th on one fo the first flights out of Manchester when they resumed. A very tense set of passengers, but possibly one of the safest flights they would ever take, ironically. They arrived, very relieved, and applause broke out spontaneously on board.

#1 Ooooo how exciting, I'm first - but how odd.
Back in the day a blog at 9.20 would have been humming along by 9.46....

2nd choice: Island Girl by Sir Elt - but think that was played last time we did islands!

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE by Sting (or Police?) would also suit the conundrum the poor celeb finds him/her self in

    Morning,

ISLANDS IN THE STREAM by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers
    ALONE AGAIN by Gilbert O'Sullivan

    A tenuous one:

ROMEO AND JULIET by Dire Straits

Because castaways get to take the complete works of Shakespeare with them.

A luxury - A lifetimes supply of chocolate, please.

A book you say Simon? Well that would have to be "Itch" because I haven't read it yet.

    Must dash...

    Have a good day.x

Morning all !! Shockingly soggy school crossing this morning, thankfully not windy though. Of course in my head I was basking on a beautiful beach ~ its the only way to deal with a wet crossing don't you know.

The cat is in the house, so clearly the summer is OVER. Time to embrace the on-comming Autumn/Winter. (lets see how many mornings/afternoons I need to visulise being on a beach)

STUCK WITH YOU - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS

Seem to remember even the video is on an island!

I think the artist in question from yesterday's blog (Gazza - #83) is Paul McCartney.

    And as for suggestions:
Don't pay the ferryman - Chris de Burgh (well, maybe the ferryman should be paid come to think of it)

My favourite Desert Island Disc celeb was Alice Cooper - always a revelation to hear him on the TV talking, but on the radio you are of course not able to see his full make-up routine (if indeed he wears it to 'do' radio) so he just sounds like a warm, funny, interesting guy.
We were driving back from a weekend away in Bath I think, and it was peeing down - the show really cheered us up on the journey.
