What a man

Simon Mayo Simon Mayo Presenter

Well only one place to start and that is the death yesterday of David Jacobs. What a gent, what a radio legend. He's one of that generation of broadcasters who has always been there, an ever-present in our lives, a man who's love and knowledge of music shone through every show; every week I saw him locked away with his producer, meticulously selecting each track for that week's programme. He was always the the jauntiest man in the building, a twinkle in his eye and witty comment at the ready. I only met him when I moved to Radio 2 but always looked forward to bumping into him. I sat opposite him at a showcase that Harper Simon, Paul Simon's son was singing at and it is fair to say that the American was less than impressive. David leant over to me and whispered-though everyone on the table heard- 'Just as well his dad's famous!'. It was pretty much what we all thought but hadn't dared to say. Our condolences to all his family.
Today we welcome James Dean Bradfield and Nicky Wire from the Manic Street Preachers. The Manics are starring at our Hyde Park gig on Sunday and have a new album 'Rewind The Film' out this month. They're one of the best live bands out there and one of the many must-see acts this weekend.
And I think BACK TO SCHOOL oldies will capture the moment perfectly.
Have a golden, sun-kissed Tuesday, see you after 5.

Good morning dear Bloggies - the sun is shining; another bright day in the making, I think.

Good words about David Jacobs, Simon ........ he will be missed.

I hope things are settling down in the stressed households and folk are feeling more relaxed and getting into the old, settling routines. Even in my little world, I hate being out of my usual routines and that's only having myself to sort out, never mind other demanding little bodies!!

No choon chasing from me today - I shall be out again this evening - dinner with brother and sister-in-law.

Have a good day everyone and hugs through the ether to those who need them ((((()))))

Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd
    I don't like Mondays - Boomton Rats
    Blackboard Jumble - Barron Knights
Every Breath You Take - Police (Sting was a teacher!) (I was going to suggest Don't stand so close to me, but this could be inappropriate at this moment in time with the various allegations!)

Trivia claim to fame: I used to work with one of the original members of ACDC!

Back to school was completely evident from the traffic this morning: a step-function difference from yesterday! How about:

    SCHOOL - SUPERTRAMP
BE CHROOL TO YOUR SCHOOL - TWISTED SISTER
    HEADMASTER RITUAL - THE SMITHS
HOT FOR TEACHER - VAN HALEN :not sure I can condone this, but I can remember this Maths teacher...
SUBDIVISIONS - RUSH :you have to listen to the lyrics I know, but it is' fab...

I vote for "Me and Julio..." in case any one is counting.

Today is the ultimate mixed emotion day - whilst I'm proud of my little boy in his Tom-Hanks-in-Big blazer I'm also sad because he'll not be my little boy much longer...

As I have boys my suggestions are shaped that way:

    SHY BOY - Bananarama
    WILD BOYS - Duran Duran

but the one I'd really like:

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY - Deneice Williams

As evidenced by posts passim Manic Street Preachers are one of my favourite live acts - the new tracks I have heard sound just about perfect - but linking tenuously to today's theme would love to hear from the year 2000

THE MASSES AGAINST THE CLASSES - MANIC STREET PREACHERS
