As soon as I was instituted as vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square six months ago, this was something I knew I needed to do. If I was going to speak publicly about these issues I needed to know what sleeping outside felt like.

We are fortunate enough to have somewhere to live, which is one of the reasons why we support the St Martin-in-the-Fields Christmas Appeal by making and selling Christmas puddings.

The Radio 4 Appeal has got off to a flying start in 2012. The first four charities of the New Year have together raised over £50,000.
So I just wanted to say a big thank you to our listeners.

Last year the Radio 4 Appeal raised over £1.5 million for 52 different charities. For over 80 years, charities have had the chance to make a direct appeal to the listeners every Sunday morning. If we had kept an autograph book of the presenters over those decades - it would be a great read!
