I have a precious memory of your voice on the radio. I was in hospital a long time around the birth of my eldest child (now 16). As I was ill enough to rate a room to myself, and was separated from my baby, I was allowed a radio by the bed. The feeling of reassurance and normality I had the first morning as I listened to your familiar voice cannot be described.

Farewell and good wishes for your next chapter. Thanks for all the giggles, news and being an Icon of the best radio broadcasting in the world. You will be greatly missed but always appreciated.

What a sad day for all your loyal listeners that your authoritative, crystal clear and neutral delivery on the Today programme and news will be absent. I wish you all the very best, and hope that you find great success as a free-lancer, both back for the BBC and further afield. Perhaps you can become the new voice of Marks and Spencer or John Lewis's, or some other equally solid British Institutions? Whatever the offers, I am sure you will relish some of the additional freedom these new opportunities will bring - and have fun! Very best wishes.
