There's certainly no set formula for the tracks that take up the BBC Introducing spot on the Radio 1 playlist. In 2013 alone, there's been rock and metal, pop and Americana, indie and dance. This week, it's a generous helping of soul courtesy of Typesun and The PL. It'll be played across BBC Radio 1 daytime shows all week. Listen and let us know whether you rate the track in the comments below.
Hometown: Typesun is Luke Harney, a DJ, producer and drummer from Bristol.
Style: Billed as deep, underground soul music that is effortlessly beautiful. A simple drum beat and cinematic bassline provide the bare bones of a minimal instrumental that backs a cool, calm and seductive vocal akin to D'Angelo and Dwele. If The PL was a new bar in your neighbourhood, there would be queues around the block to get in. The PL is the follow up to Typesun's equally well recieved debut Heart Maths.
You need to know: There's some big names backing Typesun already. Gilles Peterson, Pete Tong and Mr Scruff have given Luke the thumbs up alongside Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne and Jassanova.
Supported by: The PL was uploaded to BBC Introducing in the West a couple of months ago. The team there wasted no time and got Typesun in for a session as part of their first show of the year.
