Executive Producer Lorraine Newman has announced her decision to leave EastEnders, it was confirmed today. Following Lorraine's decision, Dominic Treadwell-Collins will be replacing Lorraine in the role.

Lorraine Newman

Lorraine Newman took over the role as Executive Producer in 2012 and during her 16 months at the helm, EastEnders has triumphed at the Baftas as well as being the most watched show on Christmas Day, with over 9 million viewers tuning in to find out Max's secret.

Most recently, Lorraine has secured many of the show’s most notable characters to return this autumn, including Barbara Windsor, Michael French and Samantha Womack, as well as lining up several new and exciting characters which will see EastEnders kicking off this autumn with many explosive storylines, starting with Phil Mitchell fighting for his life after being involved in a huge car crash.

Lorraine joined EastEnders as a script secretary at the age of 19 and her passion and commitment to the show has been unrivalled. The first Executive Producer to occupy every editorial role on the show, Lorraine has played a huge part in creating some of the best loved moments in soap land.

Speaking of her decision to leave, Lorraine says: "I have loved every moment of my time at EastEnders but it is finally time to leave Walford. Over the past 23 years I have been involved in some of the best moments on British television, from ‘Who Shot Phil?’, to ‘You Ain’t My Mother!’, to the 25th Live Anniversary episode and in the past year, the Olympic Torch episode has also been a proud highlight. Over the past year, I have also had the pleasure of planning and implementing the revival of many of the EastEnders clans who should always be at the heart of the show.

"I am confident that I am leaving the show in a stronger place and am sure that Dominic will continue to build upon this, taking the show to a new level. I am delighted to be joining BBC Drama Production as an Executive Producer and look forward to the new opportunities and projects this will bring."

Kate Harwood, Head of BBC Drama Production, England, added: "I want to thank Lorraine very deeply on behalf of the BBC for the work she’s done on EastEnders over many years. From the beginning her love of the programme and her attention to detail has been part of the warp and weft of life in Walford and for seven years her work as Series Producer drove quality and provided great strength at the core of the show. Since early 2012 Lorraine took on the job of Executive Producer and led from the front the team she knows so well, both to Bafta glory and Christmas ratings success. EastEnders will miss Lorraine very much indeed but I am delighted she is joining the Series and Serials side of In-House Drama as an executive producer."

Dominic Treadwell-Collins returns to EastEnders after a three-year absence, in which time he has been working as Head of Development at production company Lovely Day.

Treadwell-Collins began working on the show in October 2005 as senior story editor, before becoming story producer the following year.

His first job in television was for drama series Midsomer Murders, and he previously worked as story producer on Family Affairs.

Many of EastEnders' best storylines and characters of the last decade were his imagination and design, and he played an integral part in conceiving and plotting the show's hugely successful 25th anniversary.

In his first year on the show, he created the characters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell, and Shirley Carter. Storylines created under his tenure included Muslim character Syed Masood's struggle to reconcile his faith and sexuality, Whitney's abuse, Stacey and Max's affair, Ronnie's secret daughter, Stacey's bipolar disorder and Archie Mitchell's murder.

"You never really leave EastEnders - and for the past three years, the characters have all stubbornly stayed in my head," said Dominic. "I'm sad to be leaving Lovely Day, especially at such a fertile time for the company - but am excited about the challenge of taking the helm of Britain's greatest drama.

"It is an honour to follow someone as talented and experienced as Lorraine and I'm looking forward to building on her work and taking this iconic and essential show into 2014 and beyond, as we look to EastEnders' 30th anniversary in 2015."

Well, people seem very enthusiastic about this new EP, but I suppose we have to wait and see!! Only time will tell and it's not because he was behind some important SL in the past that he's going to be a good producer for EE!! It's a different job and huge one he has ahead of him! Anyway, wishing him all the best!! (and as long as he reunites Joey and Lauren, I'll be happy, lol). Good luck to Lorraine Newman (who by the way wasn't as bad as some people suggest) for her future career!!

I feel horrible saying it but this is great as Eastenders has gone downhill since shes been in charge. The show was absolutely awesome when Deideric Santer was the main writer but the last year has been terrible. By the looks of upcoming storylines, the show will be back on form and restore its former glory

Great news . Sorry Lorraine I am sure your a nice person and I wish you the best but if you have been with the show for that many years you think you would of had so many great Ideas in your head of how and what you could do to the show .You got a great opportunity and you failed miserably and for most of the time you have been producer us fans have had to watch crap dull storylines every week. I have been hoping for a new producer for months so glad it is happening I don't think Lorraine quit I think she probably got the boot ratings are getting worse and the BBC are not going to put up with that. Dominic seems a great person for the job a man who created the Mitchell sisters and Shirley plus the Archie murder and the brilliant secret daughter story witch Is one of my all time best storylines .The man has to be phrased these story's were written when Diederic santer was the producer [ I think ] we should have the two team up as producers as Pilky is right the show was brilliant when Diederic Santer was in charge he was a brilliant producer dont think he was ever the writer Pilky but I could be wrong .I know the scripts are written 6 months a head I think so it will probably still be a lot of Lorraine's ideas up till then. I wish Domonic came in a few month ago so he would of been in charge of the Christmas storyline as I am sure he would have come up with a better storyline I am not sure how it works but hopefully if there are things he don't like that are planned a head he can change them .I've got my hopes up he is going to turn the show around but then again I did that when Lorraine took over from Bryan Kirkwood as I think the show got worse when Bryan took over I was looking forward to Lorraine taking over and look what happened there so I guess us fans will have to wait and see.

All the best for the future Lorraine, you have done a fantastic job at EastEnders. Thanks for making the soap what it is today. Like I have said on previous entries for me the show is compulsory viewing and I am a massive fan of the show. Admittedly EastEnders didn't do too well at the soap awards this year, but there is always next year. She has left big shoes to fill and let's hope that her replacement will be able to step up to the mark from day 1! The show needs to keep the ratings up as we all know what happens if not enough people watch, the show gets pulled don't let that happen please! Keep the storylines good and I'll keep watching.

LaptopCharlieB sorry don't agree with you at all. Lorraine did not do a fantastic job at EasEnders at all that is why the show did so badly at the soap awards .She hasn't left big shoes to fill in fact she has made it easier for Dominic as any think he does will probably better than lorraine's un original storylines .The show need to keep the ratings up ???? they have been going down ever since Lorraine took over as producer .The gang and Lauren story was not bad Pats death episode was good and Kats affair storyline went on way to long and was the same old and boring but the reveal episode was very good and the Christmas ep was ok ish .Put it this way since she took over I've never heard of so many people talking bad about the show. your entitled to your own opinion though so fare enough

Eastenders had no greater fan than I but I was literally "FORCED" to stop watching it because the writing was so bad it became sheer torture. The show is locked down in total stagnation! The plots are silly, dull and as predictable as the characters. There is no character development. They don't meet and interact with new faces who have moved into or are passing through Walford. Friends who don't live in Walford don't pop up offering a chance for a new story line and character. Albert Square exists in a vacuum. The residents have a totally incestuous existence, in a never ending spiral of despair, stupidity, anger, crime and deceit forever going in depressing circles. Finally, I am certain that the reason Eastenders lost such a large portion of it's audience is because somewhere along the line the producers decided to rest on their laurels and "Coast Along" when holding onto their audience requires that "They keep rowing!"
The show desperately needs to turn itself around with good writers and new, exciting and interesting story lines and characters.Otherwise the audience will continue to dwindle.

Funny that everywhere I look someone is saying how great old eastenders was and how its now rubbish. We'll this year is the first time I have watched it regularly in years and that's because of Newman's storyline such as Laurencs alcoholism and Joey & Lauren and Tanya's goodbye. Maybe be I have terrible taste or or you can't please all of the people all of the time, people are bound to complain. As for the often cited affairs complaints from my memory theres only been one.

Sundays child we have seen Kat have an affair again we have seen Sharon kiss jack when going out with Phil then getting with jack , Denise kissing her sisters boyfriend ray Alice sleeping with Michael , Kirsty turning up then getting it on with Max , joey going from Lucy to Lauren to Lucy , and whitney cheated on Tyler at some point I think and I'm sure there is more I just cant think of at the moment most of the show since lorraine took over has been about people sleeping with each other or having the odd snog very boring and more griping storylines are needed urgently as more of the same is coming up as Kat gets in with Carl I hear also when Jake arrives on the square he gets it on with Lauren and with Sadie arriving soon I'm sure we will see the same thing again with all the blokes trying it on with her .And Tanya's exit was poor for a character who has been on the show for 7 years she didn't even get Julia's theme

Ms. Newman might be a very nice lady, but under her tutelage EastEnders has been terrible. We saw so many truly good actors leave in droves. The storylines have been done a million times and some of the newly hired actors are just plain awful. So, to say I am sad she is leaving? Oh hell no!
