EastEnders Backstage Team EastEnders Backstage Team

We hope the surprise return of Jane last night was an enjoyable one! It certainly was for actress Laurie Brett, who caught up with us to reveal more about the circumstances surrounding her return:

Jane Beale

How tough it was to keep the return under wraps, after having to keep it secret?

It wasn’t too difficult for me. The Waterloo Road team were kind enough to schedule for  me to do a few episodes and my family knew because of child care. It did become difficult because I wanted to say I was going back to EastEnders, but it was probably harder for the press office at EastEnders and Dominic. It was a harder secret operation for them; everyone there did a sterling job.

Were you pleased it was such a surprise for viewers?

I was really pleased because I was thinking “Is this going to have the impact of what people were expecting or hoping for?”  Jane is a nice character and a lot of people identify with her, but I didn’t ever really think she was as popular as last night proved. So I was absolutely thrilled with last night.

What has the reaction been?

My phone went into meltdown, with texts, phonecalls, tweets - and I received calls from friends saying “I think you have broken Twitter.” It was phenomenal and just shows what a surprise, the simple stuff without spoilers, makes - and I think we need more of that.

What did it feel like to return to the set?

It was a really strange time to come back to EastEnders because I was in the middle of filming some intense Waterloo Road stuff, so I was being Christine in a dark place mentally and then coming onto the jolly Jane role… So that was a little all over the place with two different characters. However, it was brilliant because I spent a lot of time at EastEnders and on The Square, it was really nostalgic and a constant deja vu situation, but it was lovely.

What was it like to work with Adam again?

Like putting on a pair of old slippers! When you work with someone for eight years, the minute we were on set and started to do the lines it was just easy.

Did you find it hard to slip back into Jane’s shoes?

The speed of filming at EastEnders, you really have to hit the ground running - and once I got back in the swing of it, it was fantastic

How has it been filming two big dramas with different accents?

I kind of speak in two accents all the time. I have lived in London for over 25 years and it’s my adopted accent. As an actress I don’t think it’s that difficult to work out, but at one point filming with Adam in the Beales’ house, we were doing a take and he whispered in my ear that I did a line that sounded very Scottish! But apart from a few blips it was fine.

YaY Jane's back. BUT things still going to be different because although Jane's working with Ian again she's not working with Tanya tho. I think Tanya should come back. I was really surprised that Jane suddenly returned.

Yes, great to see Jane back! Does anyone have concerns about Lucy's weight? The clothes Lucy wears make her look like dangerously thin. Lucy is not a good role model for young women watching the show, I my opinion.

Love Jane, don't want her with Maas if she comes back, I would like her to be stronger without Ian but still be there for the kids.

Laurie Brett is right they should keep more things hidden and less spoilers would be much better .I never really thought much of Jane but once she's been gone I think her and Ian worked really well I definitely think she has had talks with Dominic and will be back before the end f the year .And Gill yes the girl who plays Lucy is very skinny but what bothers me is I think she is awful as Lucy and has bad habits a lot of the time when she's stood talking she has her hands in her sleeves , has her arms close to her body just like somebody would be if they were out in the snow or freezing or somethink it is so irritating to watch The old Lucy was so much better

blog123, I agreed I think the actress who previously played Lucy was better suited for the role. She was a little Cindy, her mom, not her half sister. She seemed more devious, for some reason I think the mom, Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) will be showing up even if she is dead. I think it was a big mistake to get rid of Ian's mom, Kathy. Anyhow, love Jane

It was lovely to see Jane back. A great character. Just when I was thinking of not watching anymore as the recent characters have been awful, especially Carl and the dreadful Carter family.

Well it was lovely to see Jane again, and why did she come back agnyway, was it because Peter called her because he was worried about Ian, anyway, the actress Laurie is great in Waterloo Road aaswell, I haven't seen it for a while. But its quite gooed. Well I really enjoyed that interview and congratulations Jane on being so popular with the come back. Well would be nice to know what Jane is up to now, I heard she was living in Florida. Orlando. Lucky for some. Well hope you all enjoed reading the interview, and thanks for reading my message, all the very best, take care, bye.

I didn't realise that Laurie Brett was Scottish until I saw her in Waterloo Road I had to use a popular search engine to find that out. It was a massive suprise to see her reprise her role as Jane Beale in EastEnders even it was only for one episode. Ian's face was a picture when she appeared at the door. Laurie is a very talented actress who is brilliant in both the afore-mentioned shows. All the best for the future Laurie! If she ever decides to leave Waterloo Road she should be written back into EastEnders straight away.
