Liam Philips takes on the Chopper Challenge, part of 5 live's new cycling series BeSpoke.

"I thought of that while riding my bicycle" - Albert Einstein on the Theory of Relativity

The Manchester Velodrome has seen many things in its time. Day in, day out it’s filled with the perspiration of world champions and Olympic gold medallists as they train in pursuit of future glory.

But has it seen anything like the Chopper Challenge? The great and the good of British cycling take it in turns to embark upon a timed lap around the velodrome’s inner concourse…on a Chopper. The rules are simple- the rider must remain seated at all times, fastest rider wins.

The Chopper Challenge is just one of the features of Colin Murray’s new monthly cycling show BeSpoke, which launches this Friday from 9pm on BBC 5live Sport.

BeSpoke, the network’s first ever dedicated cycling programme, will freewheel from lifestyle to sporting issues as we delve deep into the rich cultural backdrop that frames cycling in this country – the Sunday rides punctuated by pints in rural pubs, the unique fashion, the music, the equipment.

As for Einstein’s conception of the Theory of Relativity whilst on two wheels? Imagine what he would have come up with had he been on a Chopper…

Patrick Nathanson is a producer for 5 live Sport. Bespoke, 5 live's new monthly cycling programme, begins Friday 2 November at 9pm.
