Herrick in episode 5 The Longest Day

The fifth episode of Being Human, entitled The Longest Day, is less than 24 hours away, but what can we expect? Well, a lot can be said in three small words.

Herrick is back.

We saw from Thursday's preview clip that Nina and George are taking him on the run, but why? And how? One thing's for sure, Mitchell is not going to be very happy to see his old friend. In fact, three more words for you... big bad John.

This episode isn't called The Longest Day for nothing. What starts as a bad day continues to get much worse when a member of the local authority and one of Mitchell's old friends drop by, both in search of Herrick. The man has a knack of causing havoc with the slightest input, but does he even know what he's doing in his current state? Only time will tell on that front.

We all think we've had bad days, but this one really is going to test the foursome to their limit. Make sure you're watching with us this Sunday at 9pm on BBC Three to see how it unfolds, and follow us on Twitter (@bbcbeinghuman) for updates before, during and after the show. Oh, and three final words...

Don't miss it.

Wow i forget how much more excited i get when i see the 24 hour countdown blogs. I really can't wait for tomorrow now.

  • Comment number 2.

    im second

  • Comment number 3.

eeeep im all excited and giddy i hope mitchell dont die there will be nothing to get me through the week

  • Comment number 4.

The thing is, we can all keep second guessing and it is probably really good therapy for all us bloggers otherwise we could end up like herrick, poor thing?
Still dont believe he's a fruitloop, though. More like the Angel Of Death.........

  • Comment number 5.

    Where's Ewan? HALLOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooo

  • Comment number 6.

    YAY!! Less then 24 hours!!!!

  • Comment number 7.

OMG I cant wait! But im sad that we are over half way through the series already! I don't know what i'll do when its over :(

Anyway, there is something that's been bothering me for a while now and that is 'do vampires breathe?' We know they don't have heartbeats because of the machines not working on Mitchell in the hospital in episode 6 of season 1 and in episode 5 of season 2 they said that there was no smoke/air in the lungs of the bodies of the vampires caught in the explosion at the funeral parlor, "They were already dead" suggesting that vampires are just animated corpses that don't decay. But this is the thing that confuses me: if vampires don't breathe, then how can Mitchell smoke?

  • Comment number 8.

Is that blood on Herricks chin/mouth? has he been feeding on his fellow patients?.
Notice his hands look all twisted like a poor olde arthritic pensioner, is this the result of georges mauling or his mental state?

  • Comment number 9.

"...big bad John", eh? Exciting! :)

Can't wait for tomorrow! I'd better get some Party rings in... :)

  • Comment number 10.

    cant wait!

  • Comment number 11.

i dont get to see it 'til 11pm...grrr work!!!! cant wait tho... Herrick looks so confused + soooo not...erm...Herrick!!!
Being human does the same to me as 'the real hustle' does to george + mitchell.........i get so grumpy if my 'being human time' is disturbed. Bring it on :):):)

  • Comment number 12.

in about 90 mins series 3 will premiere here in the states, after an all day marathon of ALL the episodes. Can't wait to see it in HD I enjoyed it on the net but Mitchell should always be in HD unless he's in person..lol

I can't wait to see The longest day though.

Can anyone of you lovely people tell me how one who lives in the states can see the CenSSA vids? I didn't know they existed till last week.

  • Comment number 13.

there should be a Herrick Prequel!
and oh god i think this is there abouts the longest 24hours ever!

  • Comment number 14.

13 issydalek! I've meant to say that often!!

As I'm rewatching the Lia episode and I was just thinking that maybe mitchell should have aorn brighter colours instead of all black. I would be freaked out if I died and the man who said he's going on a journey with me was hot and all in black....lol

  • Comment number 15.

14- It would be even more freaky for him if for some reason Mitchell was wearing devils horns on his head. lol

  • Comment number 16.

    In three words..

    I can't wait!

  • Comment number 17.

    Big Bad John is back.
    Ohhh ive missed him.

  • Comment number 18.

Is it me or the woman standing by Herrick is failed threesome Sadie???

  • Comment number 19.

Hi all and happy Being Human day.

The Longest Day, how appropriate it always takes forever till BH starts.

12 YummyYumMum if you have the season 2 DVD's just let the 1st disk run for a few minutes and they will pop up or try YouTube.

  • Comment number 20.

On tenterhooks. If the previous eps have been anything to go by, it's going to be epic!

    7. - EP - Vampires not breathing have always been a bugbear in the movie/genre world, not least because actors can't not breathe! lol. But most get by it by saying that breathing is voluntary not compulsory, as is the heartbeat. If a vampire didn't breathe they wouldn't be able to talk, let alone smoke, so if they can do it voluntarily or out of habit, then they can get round this problem. A heartbeat/blood pressure would also be necessary for other, uh, activities that male vampires....ok, not going there...

The thing that bothered me about the explosion at the funeral parlour is why there were 30 bodies. We know vampires turn to dust when they're young and don't when they're older (as with Herrick who's body was buried, and Ivan who also had a body), but does this mean there were more than 30 vampires in the funeral parlour at the time of the explosion? Probably. Otherwise I'm just going to have to suspend belief again, lol.

Anyway, roll on tonight. Close the curtains, take the phone off the hook, get the party rings ready and.....enjoy. xx

  • Comment number 21.

    Party Rings ! YAY!

  • Comment number 22.

with Just 8 hours to go a thought arises in my mind what will the opening flashback be?

Mitchell and Herrick - back in the day

Herrick and Cara - shortly after he's been resurrected

Herrick and Cara - telling secrets of resurrection.

    well any other ideas?

  • Comment number 23.

Oh go to the home page there is a picture of Herrick in a Hawaiian shirt

  • Comment number 24.

    Love the style, Herrick

  • Comment number 25.

Big Bad John?- i'm assuming that's Mitchell, i'm wondering whether we're going to see him unravel even more. Or a flashback?

I'm on tenterhooks for tonight's episode.

  • Comment number 26.

maybe thats how mitchell survives..he is after all 500ish? years old..maybe a blood lust like the box car 20 every so often is how he keeps going?

can a vampire live forever if they dont drink blood once in a while?

maybe thats what annie needs to come to terms with..if her and mitchell live forever..then he needs a slip up once in a while

by the way agree with comment someone said on earlier blog..dont think they will be together forever cos she will smoother him and mitchell is used to being a free spirit

    am on countdown to 9pm!!!

  • Comment number 27.

23 - Ewan. Thanks for flagging up the Hawaiian shirt. Priceless! xx

  • Comment number 28.

Afternoon bloggers....according to Narin Bahar who (amongst other talented things) writes BH reviews for SFX magazine, and lucky woman gets to view the episodes before us, this epsiode is the best one yet....and we may need to hide behind cushions!

I'm thinking that Bazzer (episode cast list) must be this old friend of Mitchell's and therefore a vampire..he sounds a loose cannon so maybe fireworks about to happen! Interesting reference to Big Bad John in Mr P's comment...does this mean that Mitchell...once again!...is going to resort to violence?...and will Herrick be on the receiving end? ...oh and what is Cara going to be up to in this episode?

Ishbel_haf....thanks for really interesting observations on vampires...as articulate as ever.

Mr P...I'll be joining the party on twitter sometime before 9pm..see you there!

  • Comment number 29.

Oh..that pic...Herrick clearly living in the attic...mmmm wonder if he finds Mitchell's hidden secret?
    ...loving his shirt....

  • Comment number 30.

i hv a feeling annie won't be smothering mitchell after what we saw in the promo

  • Comment number 31.

6 hours and I am going to watch the behind the scenes again see if I can pick up on anything that is going on in the layout of the set. That might give a hint about what happens.

Apart from a disturbed meal when something big happens.

  • Comment number 32.

    three words

    the longest day...

    *biting nails*

  • Comment number 33.

I took the old friend to be Cara, since we saw her knock on the door in the preview.

It's really all going to kick off now, isn't it? OMGOMGOMG!

  • Comment number 34.

This looks set to be the best episode yet - sounds like Mitchell may well lose it big style!
    5.5 hrs to go. I can't wait!

  • Comment number 35.

20:"We know vampires turn to dust when they're young and don't when they're older (as with Herrick who's body was buried, and Ivan who also had a body)"

I wonder if it's more due to the method of dispatch. I.e. stake through the heart leads to dust. Being blown up or killed by a werewolf doesn't. It seems odd to me that the young ones would turn to dust while the old ones don't as it's usually the other way around in vampire lore... Course 'Being Human' has it's own rules.

  • Comment number 36.

Find it hard to believe they can top last week's amazing ep- but those who've seen it seen to be saying they can and do.

And can't believe people have invited themselves over this evening (obviously not vampires - or BH fans - how strange is that?) - so will have an even longer day and a bit before I can watch...

  • Comment number 37.

Actually thinking about it "it's usually the other way around in vampire lore." isn't really true. I'm thinking mainly of the Dracula novel. I.e. Lucy Westenra just looks like a peaceful human corpse after her staking. Dracula and his 3 brides on the other hand turn to dust as they're ancient. In the more traditional folklore, I think dispatched vampires just look like corpses.

  • Comment number 38.

in the pic of him in the colourful top he looks more evil that mental

  • Comment number 39.

A lot of why some vampires dust and others leave remains behind just so you get it

    stake = dust.

torn apart = lots of scattered bits.

  • Comment number 40.

Nice to meet u uncle Billy

  • Comment number 41.

Hello bloggers. :) I am so looking forward to this episode! Wonder if Herrick knows who he is, or if he believes Nina and thinks he is uncle Billy?

  • Comment number 42.

So, ewan- I've been reading these blogs since BH2, and yours always seem to make the most sense after and even before events are revealed on the telly- are you a BH spy or just bright...?

  • Comment number 43.

Evening everyone! This definitely is 'The Longest Day'! Can't believe it's actually episode 5 already. I've always thought Ep 5 was the defining and turning point in both previous series - things always start to kick off! Welcome back Herrick and.... Big Bad John. It's just occurred to me that, aside from the Box Tunnel incident we've never actually seen Mitchell being really bad! All previous flashbacks and in his prequel his conscience has already kicked in. We have never seen the Mitchell of (darkest heart of us all) legend! Getting very nervous. We've got the Iced Rings ready and the cushions, just in case, I think we're going to need them!

  • Comment number 44.

It would be so cool to be a being human spy wouldn't it?

    A real shame I'm not.

  • Comment number 45.

    (42) You're a spy arn't you! I mean you clearly had training, because the way held it together there it was chilly!..... (That sentece about Ewan being a spy just made me think about this quote). :) Love that scene with the fake pigeon.

  • Comment number 46.

"Your a spy arnt you i mean youve clearly had training but the way u held it together there it was chillin"

    Just had to say it.

  • Comment number 47.

45 GRRRRR cnt belive u got in there before me.

  • Comment number 48.

Im a quote master on this blogg.

  • Comment number 49.

Longest Day? Try Longest week waiting for the next episode!!

Think this is going to be the one where everything kicks off (Hopefully hehe), how can Herrick coming back be a good thing to our scooby gang! So excited =D

I think Mitchell is gonna go mental and really crack up, im looking forward to this & more excitment acting from Mr Turner. Hope we get more info on the hairy baby situation too. Poor Annie is gonna get her heart broken =(

So many good things are gonna happen me thinks

  • Comment number 50.

    (45) Wow, we had the exact same thought! Haha Being Human telepathy?

  • Comment number 51.

You know the moment when the waiting is at it's worst - it's when you've finished you re-watch of both being human and becoming human and realise now that there is nothing to occupy your time but time.

Time ticking away at you seeming to slow down as your waiting for the minute hand to complete two more complete. circuits and then half way round again.

I don't know if you can tell but the waiting getting to me.

  • Comment number 52.

So- ewan you must read a lot or else how do you know so much?

  • Comment number 53.

Ill tell wat i do to pass the time,
    I watch Take That videos.

  • Comment number 54.

52 - Ewan just is a genius. He doesn't sleep even. He just lives the Being/Becoming Human-ness. He absorbs knowledge.

Hello Ewan and Saffz. Been a while since I was here. I had to catch up on at least three blogs. Is everyone well? Or are they scratching wallpaper in a George way as they climb the walls in anticipation of the next episode?

  • Comment number 55.

52 - I read and watch and listen - everyone does but just about different things.

  • Comment number 56.

In this interview http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s116/being-human/tubetalk/a296145/being-human-week-qa-with-aidan-turner.html AT says they do a 1920s flashback, which would be prime Evil Mitchell time, since he was turned in 1917.

  • Comment number 57.

53 - ye Gods Saffz. That is scary. Perhaps you need to be in Herrick's costume of last week?!

I have killed an hour by catching up on blog videos for all my favourite websites. Tim almost got me off to sleep...

I pass the time by pretending to essay read, obviously.

  • Comment number 58.

    Heres a thing.

The Media students at my school have to do coursework on BH,
If i had taken Media i would get a A*
    For that coursework.

They had to watch Series 1 and 2 in class.
    I would have loved that,
Really wish i had taken that subjet.

  • Comment number 59.

Wow school is so much better since when I was last there. There wasn't even a subject called "media" in my day.

    Oh I feel so old.

  • Comment number 60.

58 - I wonder if the teacher of Media at your school is a blogger. They're clearly a fan if they have managed to write BH into their syllabus! Typical BH fan in fact. They try and watch it at every opportunity; force it upon unsuspecting viewers who don't have the position of power to ask you to change the channel... marvellous! Pure selfishness at its best.

  • Comment number 61.

Really wish i had taken it.

    quote time.

"Cassy Rory and Iman and there doing Media Studies at the college and get this right Cassy only has one kidney she was born that way nobody knows why"

  • Comment number 62.

    Watchin Bh at school,
    Would love it.
    Teacher is deffo a fan.

  • Comment number 63.

To pass the time I have been watching recordings of 'Comedy Rocks'- laughing takes my mind off the time- also blogging works.

What worries me is what happens when we reach the end- what then??

  • Comment number 64.

61 - Saffz - is there a quote for everything?

63 - Hello Rach, not sure I've blog chatted with you before. Comedy works well - half of the youtube I've done today is my favourite comedian. At the end, we have the dvd boxsets. And more comedy distractions. It'll probably be another decade before something as unique and exciting as BH comes on tv again.

  • Comment number 65.

Im also watchin come dine with me.
    2 Hours n 55 Mins.

  • Comment number 66.

I always watch Bh live on BBCiplayer cos my mum says im to young to be watchin it,
    But im not.

  • Comment number 67.

64.Hi warwickshire_rose I am new here, only been blogging for a week! I started re-watching BH1 a few days ago and was amazed that it was as good or even better than 1st time round even though you know what's going to happen- how do they do that?!

  • Comment number 68.

How young is too young these days? BH is 15-rated. Is 14 too young then? Glad the kids are definitely too young for it to be an issue for me to contemplate! We're all a lot safer with Merlin... which has added bonus material for me!

  • Comment number 69.

    Hello Rachyy
Welcome to the blogg im Saffz Been bloggin for just over 5 Weeks now.

  • Comment number 70.

I watch Merlin as well but its quite borin compared with BH.

  • Comment number 71.

67 - ah well welcome Rach! I have been very low-key this last week, primarily because I have spent much of it unconscious in bed with a virus, never venturing into the study. Also feeling a little dispondent (spelling?!) and left behind! 1st season is/was awesome; best so far probably for me, and I love watching it back as you do notice little things you missed previously! LOVE IT!

  • Comment number 72.

Yhhh like a cup on the windowsil sommit like that, Little things u didnt notest before.

  • Comment number 73.

70 - Merlin definitely in a different class to BH (firmly in family entertainment). I am currently enjoying (shock horror) Merlin dvds more than BH! I feel like a traitor, but it's the shared enjoyment of Merlin that makes it special for us oldies - it's wonderful to be able to watch tv as a family together and share the excitement of children, whilst perving in an adult way at the handsome young men!

67 - sorry was I supposed to give my age? I've been following the blog for ages (since the start of BH1 really) but I only started participating just before Christmas.

  • Comment number 74.

aw no - I love merlin AND being human :)

Wish i could have done it at school!

ONLY 1 HOUR AND 40 MINS LEFT!!!!!!! I read in the radio times that this episode is the best yet and that mitchell's massacre secret is revealed :D CAN'T WAIT!!!!

    Leigh Mariana x

  • Comment number 75.

69 and 71 thank you for your welcomes! they said you were a friendly bunch.

71- It amazes me that the whole BH story stands up to so much unrelenting scrutiny from bloggers. Even watched many times and studied in detail (up to A level standard?!or degree level- PhD anyone-ewan?) the story threads still make sense. I feel like we are being fed little hints and clues all the time, but not just about the story within one series but over the whole thing. Does any of that make sense?

  • Comment number 76.

I reakon Herrick finds the book under the wood floor,
Can he remember how to read?

  • Comment number 77.

I will go up stairs to my bedroom in about half an hour to get set up for tonight.

  • Comment number 78.

74 - woah Leigh Mariana - Hello! - that does make this episode suddenly sound a lot more exciting than I had registered, not being a pundit of tv mags!

75 - glad you feel welcome - we are a friendly bunch indeed! It's why I'm here! I think you make sense in my head! I would say that Ewan is phd level in his awareness of episode trivia. I am much lower down the spectrum but I am just fascinated by little story arcs that thread in and out throughout the series. I love the delicacy with which the foundations of something huge can be introduced without you realising that it will be important. I don't like to blog after episodes as I don't want to tear them to pieces and end up down dead-end alleys, but like the slow reveal that the writers seem to have planned.

  • Comment number 79.

Sunday is the longest day for me...and i can't watch the ep live...given my husband records Top Gear to watch after we get our kids off to bed and i have to wait til after that to watch my show. I'm biting my nails, counting down the minutes.

I don't think Herrick is a confused old man, i think he's still the evil manipulative vamp of S1. Mitchell is slowly unravelling and all in all it promises to be an amazing episode, i think his seeing Herrick again will make his paranoia grow and quite possibly tip him over the edge.

  • Comment number 80.

why didnt mitchell stake herrick when he had the opportunity to? he had no problem doing it to graham in ep2!

    43. daisy the tourist..are party rings the BH bloggers snack of choice? :-)will have to go out and buy some!

1 hour 30 mins and counting!!!!!

  • Comment number 81.

76 - well we know Cara is in the episode from the Bristol days, she was saved by Daisy from the caves, and Daisy will have told her about her little daytrip on the trains with Mitchell. All the vamps (in Bristol) are pretty aware about what Mitchell did. Herrick won't need to say a thing or discover any books if Cara is there. She was never any good at keeping quiet.

  • Comment number 82.

    oops sorry was ep 3!

  • Comment number 83.

80 - my party food of choice will always be chocolate.

  • Comment number 84.

He had the chance to stake him when Herrick says

"Chose a chair break a leg sharpen it"

  • Comment number 85.

    chocolate..now you are talking!!!

  • Comment number 86.

    1 Hour n 15 Mins

  • Comment number 87.

84 - ah but Herrick was talking about staking Mitchell at that point. Mitchell in series one always assumed that Herrick would kill him not vice versa; don't know if it's a bit bad vampire etiquette to kill your sire, but I would have killed Herrick given the chance - maybe he didn't as he could foresee the power vaccuum... but then why would he leave George to do it then? Mitchell didn't want/feel able to kill Herrick back then in any case. Maybe it's easier for Mitchell to let go of his future than it is to let go of his past?!

  • Comment number 88.

85 - I have a slab of dairy milk beside the settee in the lounge waiting for BH. It has to be done.

  • Comment number 89.

78- I don't spend much time reading lengthy guesses on what will happen next on the blog post-ep, but i do like reading people's reactions-esp those who know BH really well. It's nice to hear someone loved the same line as you did. Also people often notice different things to me and put different meanings on things which is interesting. I do agree that the writers are the best people to tell the story and have learned to trust them over time. But I often wonder how they dare to write- what if they get it wrong? The bloggers will go mental as BH clearly means a great deal to them/us.....

  • Comment number 90.

    Like when Herrick says,

"Ill hang ur arss back on a plate u know i will"

  • Comment number 91.

    1 Hour and 10 mins

  • Comment number 92.

    Hi all!

how are we holding up with the cravings?

  • Comment number 93.

89 - I do like it when there is shared joy over certain lines - had a bit of a moment like that in the Adam episode where a question I'd been asking with fellow bloggers only an hour or two before was answered! The writers are working with fore-knowledge with Toby Whithouse. They know where they are going far better than the bloggers and the bloggers are good at trusting them to get it right. It's not like they get bored one day and just say "let's do this!" which doesn't even fit in with anything. The bloggers just really appreciate the writers and it seems to work well. There isn't the geekish questioning of everything and pulling stories to pieces like can happen on the Doctor Who websites I guess, where the writers run the risk of not knowing the back stories as well as the fans! BH is too young!

  • Comment number 94.

Can u imagine Bh being on our tv sceens for over 40 years like Doctor who.

There would have to be diffenrt actors obzly but it would still be good if it could last that long.

  • Comment number 95.

Oooh, not long now, guys. I have the cadbury caramel nibbles ready and waiting! I'm gunna take my make-up off, tie the hair up, throw on my pyjamas and snuggle up on the sofa! :D

  • Comment number 96.

It would probably have to be a '? human' franchise rather than being human

  • Comment number 97.

93- yes I agree. Can you imagine BH going on as long as Dr. Who? Interesting... I must go and tidy- something physical! Do you think we will have 100 comments pre-ep?! 60 mins!!!

  • Comment number 98.

What an earth does that mean?

  • Comment number 99.

96 - I would stick with "Being Human" I think Ewan. Better than "eating human".

94 - No, can't imagine it. We'd definitely have to have a regular turn-over of vampires as they're not allowed to age. I'd be shocked if BH made it to a run of five years!

95 - oh RetroAmour you read my mind. Sounds fantastic. Bring it on.

  • Comment number 100.

97 - definitely make it to 100 comments before the show...!!!
