TOBY WHITHOUSE'S ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

Post categories:

Garret Keogh, Online Editor | 10:45 UK time, Friday, 24 December 2010

He's the creator, writer and exectuive producer of Being Human and he's here to wish you, the fans, a Merry Christmas on behalf of everyone at Being Human Towers. Take it away Mr Toby Whithouse...

Me: I feel I've been remiss in my blogging duties. Do you want me to write something?

Barry P: That would be nice. How about a Christmas message to all the fans?

Me: Ok. Good idea.

Barry P: To make it festive, we could get a picture of you and superimpose a crown on it.

Me: No need for that. I have one of my own. I wear it when I'm writing.

Barry P: What?!

(pause)

Me: Nothing.

So here we go.
Actually, what does the Queen talk about in her Christmas message? I'm usually too busy playing with my new toys by that point on Christmas Day to watch.
She talks about everything that's happened in the previous year, doesn't she?
So what happened in 2010?
Well, in descending order of importance, we wrote and filmed Being Human series 3.
I started to experiment with facial hair.
There was an election.

Yeah, that just about covers that. Ok, what else can we talk about?

Oh yeah, I'd like to say thank you to all the bloggers for all their lovely messages when I won the Writer's Guild Award. You asked for a picture, well, if you go to the Writer's Guild award website and click on the Awards page, there's a picture of me and my face and the award. No, that's not me with the flaming red hair, that's Jane Goldman.
It was a genuine shock to win. Mainly because I won last year. I thought there'd be a rule saying I couldn't win again. I thought it was like being the American President. The statute of limitations. Or something. And yes, that IS a fair comparison. Consequently... well, as I said when I got up to get the award, "If I'd known I was going to win, I'd have drunk less."
But anyway, thank you to all of you for saying lovely things.

And how good are those Annie Broadcasts? You might already know this, but Lenora shot the whole lot in one day. It's an incredible performance, I think. She's really quite extraordinary.
Usually we do a prequel or two, introducing new characters. But this year we wanted to do something a little different. Barry insists it was my idea to do The Annie Broadcasts. I think it was his. Then we thought it might have been Rob Pursey's. Then we realised it was Garret Keogh's. Then we saw a shiny thing.
Anyway, you'll have noticed there's been a concerted effort to expand the on-line presence of the show. Not only with the glorious Annie Broadcasts, but comin' atcha in early 2011 is Becoming Human, our own little on-line spin-off series.
The on-line life of the show has always been an integral part of the BH DNA, and Barry and the gang are working tirelessly to develop new ideas and new treats for you. We hope that you'll stay with us on that journey.

So. Looking to the future, I think 2011 is going to be a very good year for BH fans.

Series 3 is our best one yet. The performances of the core four are never short of jaw-dropping. And then there are some amazing guest performances, from Robson, Lacey and Michael Socha to name but three.
I've never worked with a more enthusiastic, committed and talented crew, both editorially and on set. The quality of the show is as much down to them as anything I contribute.
Personally I'd like to give a manly nod to Phil Trethowan, our new producer. Working with him on series 3 has been a delight. When it comes to story, he's a bit of a genius, and has made my job this year so much easier.
Also, let me introduce you to Laura Cotton, our new script editor. Lovely Laura. She keeps us in check, makes me laugh, and crucially asks all the narrative questions we wish she wouldn't.

Also, a word or ten should be said about the BBC. They have allowed us an extraordinary degree of creative freedom. Being Human is good because Ben Stephenson, Danny Cohen and Eleanor Moran (our exec on series 3) at the BBC respect us and respect the show.

And then there's you lot.
Working on Being Human is a joy and an honour, and we've got a lot of stories left to tell. It means a lot to us that we have such a tenacious and passionate fan base. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think we have the most well behaved and supportive fans. Unlike... certain fan forums, there's rarely any rancour or sniping on the BH Blog, and I am very proud of you all for that.
But most of all it's wonderful to know that there are people about there who love and value (and obsess about) the show as much as we do.
So keep watching, keep posting, keep chatting and keep being nice.

And have a very Merry Christmas.

Big kiss.

(the Queen says that at the end of her message, doesn't she?)

Many thanks your royal Tobyness for a touching, nay, reverent speech...warmed the cockles of my heart, it did.

Seriously, brilliant stuff. Great to have heard from Toby and good to know that we're well-behaved (more or less) on here...there are the odd little, ahem, diversions when Mitchell appears but we're allowed!

To all cast, crew and people we don't even know about involved in Being Human, have a bloggingly good Christmas. And be careful when you take a bus...heh heh... xxxx

  • Comment number 19.

All hail Lord Toby - thank you for your lovely Christmas Eve message (much better than the Queen's speech!)
I'd like to echo 11 Dorina & say it is a shame that we won't get to attend a preview event for S3 like we did for S2 (was it really a year ago?!) as it was sooo much fun. I have loved the mini trailers & am so excited about the start of S3.
I would also like to send praise to Mr P who has kept feeding us snippets all year & keeping us going!
Merry Christmas bloggers one & all!
    Xx

Merry Christmas!! I just got BH series 1 and 2! Best Christmas Pressie ever!!!

  • Comment number 25.

7 days to go 7 days till trailer 7 days

Now will the trailer be accompanied by a date? The date we can all put down in our calendars as having a set hour when no interruptions will be tolerated.

No phone calls - no knocks on the door - not fire, plague or flood allowed to happen - No breaking news to break into that hour for 8 weeks.

    That date. Soon.

    Happy Boxing Day, everyone.

Props to Lord Toby and the BH team who've worked so tirelessly to bring the BH-verse to life, it's much appreciated. It all looks so seamless but I'm sure there's hell of a lot going on behind scenes which we're not aware of and just saying 'thank you' seems a bit lame, but thank you anyway!

I'm really looking forward to the coming year, to BH3, Becoming Human and the 'stories left to tell'.

Best wishes. Now go and enjoy that leftover turkey and a glass of wine! xx

    Hi Team,

Happy New Year and Season's Greetings,

The anticipated 3rd season of Being Human is upon us and there are numerous spoilers out there...yes, some are on the Russell Tovey Blog I write, but no matter what people think is going to happen this season, and what people want to happen, the best thing to do really is just to sit back and go on the unpredictable ride the author has planned for us.

The best part of any show is not knowing what comes next. If you kind of know where the plot’s going, everything becomes as dull and predictable as an episode of Benny Hill.

Let season three amaze you. Let it give you a sense of awe. Let it scare the pants off you. Experience feelings like a child.

I started watching this show as an expectant grandfather some 3 years ago and now I am one. The show to me is still fresh and gives me the same spine-tingling thrill I used to get when I was five and watched a butterfly unfurl its wings for the very first time.

The lead actors and ensemble bring a warmth and humanity to Toby's words like no show I can recall in my long viewing memory...and I have watched TV since the 1960s...

Most of all I hope with this coming third season the world and not just the current addicted fans will take Being Human to their hearts. The show deserves more kudos than I can write in these brief lines.

As the Old Year closes I'd like to wish one and all a prosperous New Year. Make next year like no other before.

6 days left 6 days before the trailer 6 days before the blogs begin again and countdown begins (Based on my interpretation of a the Mitchell teaser comments) that means that on that date we get a date.

So how to fill those 6 days some of us might make some increasingly unlikely guesses about the plot lines in season 3 but at the same time those with spoilers will be having to keep to themselves all they know SFX readers like myself for example.

But until then I'll try every day to keep the countdown going.

Also today is the birthday of one Sinead Keenan

I think I'm not alone in saying happy Birthday.

So close yet so far away to the start of BH3! Happy Birthday Sinead Keenan!

After rewatching the last episode of season 2, I noticed that Mitchell asks George why he hasn't asked Mitchell about what happened in the facility and before George left the house and George says he doesn't want to know. I have always assumed that George knew what Mitchell had done, but now Im not so sure. I am almost certain that George knows what happened at the facility becuase he sees in the security camera center area bodies in different rooms, but im not as sure tht george knows that mitchell killed the box car 20, or maybe he know but isn't telling mitchell that he knows?

Bless you for your countdown to the trailer, Ewan. I do hope you are right & that we will get a date for the series with the trailer. Would be great to be counting down the days til S3 starts :)

I agree with you Tom, athough it is nice to speculate as to where the series will go, it's fantastic to see unexpected twists & turns & to be guessing right to the end of the series exactly where it will end up! & of course we all like to be left guessing between series too :D

Happy Birthday to Sinead. Hope you had a lovely day.
