WEREWOLVES
New to BH? This post does not contain spoilers, but the comments might...
Seeing as we're honouring George and his plentiful best bits this week, it seemed a good idea to look at some of the mythology and history surrounding werewolves, condense it into our own bite-size interpretation, and take a look at a few of George's famous ancestors...
The question is, where does George fit in the grand mythology of werewolves? And is he, as some might say, the greatest onscreen werewolf ever? Get stuck in and add your comments, we'll be looking out for your best responses over the weekend...
SO WHAT IS A WEREWOLF?
Werewolves, also known as lycanthropes to brainy werewolf show-offs, are mythological humans that occasionally turn (or "shape-shift") into wolf-like creatures with extra-human strength and super-senses. Some turn on purpose, others - like our George -have no control over it. They have been placed under a curse following an 'unfortunate' bite or scratch by another werewolf. When their "time of the month" comes, they transform from human to wolf, and this is usually associated with the appearance of the full moon. Once in werewolf form, the hairy howlers tend to be a fairly tetchy bunch; sniffing out everyone and everything under their hairy noses and ripping it to shreds.
FAMOUS WEREWOLVES
George may be our favourite onscreen werewolf but how do his hairy-toed footsteps fit in with the illustrious line of celebrity howlers? Here are a few references to get you started...

Teen Wolf:
In the classic 1985 movie 'Teen Wolf', Michael J Fox plays Scott, a teenager who discovers that puberty for him means turning into a werewolf. The good news though is that he turns into a really good basketball player too! Like George, Teen Wolf struggles to mix chasing girls and trying to be cool with being a part-time wolf with hairy palms. The movie was a massive hit and helped to make werewolves a little more loveable.
Wolf (Jack Nicholson):
In 1994, Jack Nicholson starred as Will Randall, an ageing publisher at the end of his tether after a younger, sexier co-worker steals his job and his wife. But after being bitten by a wolf, Will finds himself with loads more energy and strength (and later - hairy palms) which is great until he starts devouring humans and stuff. It's certainly not the greatest of werewolf movies, but Jack Nicholson is a legend so it deserves a mention nonetheless.
Michael Jackson:
Yes, even the King of Pop has dabbled as a hairy creature. In his hugely famous 14 minute music video 'Thriller', MJ morphs into a furry growler while out on a date. After the lucky lady agrees to go steady with Michael, he points out that he's "not like other guys" before shape-shifting and chasing her down the road. Later in the video, loads of zombies join Michael to do the now-famous monster-dance in the street.

Michael J. Fox, likable as he is, was more wereyak than werewolf. In Italy, the title leaves out the werewolf part altogether: "Will to Win." Movie was put on ice until Back to the Future became a blockbuster, and ice was where it should have stayed.
I don't think George has much competition for best werewolf on screen. He's as sympathetic a character as I can remember in any series or film in a long time. He also didn't die right away, as most werewolves on screen do for the sake of convenience.

Hmm, I'm not much of a werewolf buff but I like Lucian in the Underworld films. They seem to change at will in Underworld. In Van Helsing it's a full moon thing (I think) and Dracula is scared of werewolfs because they can kill him.
It's lovely George is so human but a bit of a pain for him that he can't choose to change when, for instance, he comes up against Seth and the others.

yep sperkii, as I recall it's Van Helsing-turned-werewolf who does for Dracula-turned-giant-bat-thingy in the film Van Helsing. Suppose it ties in with vampires snuffing it if their heads are severed from their bodies ie a werewolf ripping it off would do the trick I'm guessing.

ok I have a serious question for anyone who can answer it. What is the old black and white film where you see a man change from being human into a werewolf? He's close up to the camera and must have been quite an acheivement in it's day as it's pretty seamless. I first saw it as a clip on BBC1 when I was a kid. It totally freaked my brother out at the time. But does anyone, fan or prodder, know what the film is? I think it's quite famous.

Anyway, don't really know the film you mean but I think that werewolves in those old films was always played by a guy called Lon Chaney. I have been swotting for the forthcoming exam.

I really liked An American Werewolf in London... I thought the guy's friend who was killed was great when he kept coming back to visit him and each time he had sort of , well, rotted a bit more and a few more bits had fallen off him. Really funny.

I've always wondered why the full moon suppossedly has an impact on werewolves, surely the moon is always full? You just can't see it all of the time.
George is definately the best werewolf ever!! I never really cared that much about Oz in Buffy or Michael J Fox or any of the others, but George is just sooo well acted I really care what happens to him. I especially like that he manages to keep his human side even when turning into a werewolf, 'It doesn't rob me of my humanity... it proves it'. Brilliant.

Oh and also I wondered about George; throughout the month when the wolf has been put away and out of sight does George have any heightened senses? We know that he does just before and after a change, but the rest of the time (if he didn't ignore it and pretend it wasn't there) could draw on it to use better hearing, sight, smell, strength etc? That would be useful as he wouldn't need to use his glasses. The same goes for Annie, when she's feeling strong and confident could she concentrate enough to be able to drink a cup of tea without it falling straight through?

I quite like American Werewolf. But tbh I'm not big on werewolf mythology.
I, erm... *clears throat ready for the onslaught* have been a fan of Jacob and his gang from New Moon (yes the books are rubbish-I do know this). But technically they're shapeshifters who can only turn into wolves. But you know.. they're cool, whatever. *runs*

Cieria:::on reflection you have done a very bad thing. Between watching all the Eps, careering around these pages chatting with you all, watching everything on you tube and anything else Mitchell related I can find....I estimated I had about 8% of my life left for non- BH stuff.

Anyway George. Personally I've never been one for Werewolves. I'm mean they're great but I've never really though 'ooh that's amazing' or anything like that. So George was the first werewolf that I really started to love. And he is great. Also I prefer some characters in BH over him, he is certainly my favourite werewolf in the world. :)

I agree about werewolves, never really read or watched much about them but I think we love George, well, bcause he is so lovable and the way Russell plays him makes you really care what happens to him. Even now I get a lump in my throat when I think about how brave and loyal he was to go face Herrick alone...Awww!

He has such big eyes too. I think the big, blue innocent looking eyes helps his case. And the way he's trying to live innocently even though he has to go turn into a werewolf once every 28 days. It makes him seem more like a victim. Which they all are really. But you know. It makes him a loveable character.

I think i have said before somewhere, as much as George makes me laugh...it is his sad bits that I love most. He really can make me cry and as soon as his eyes start filling with tears, so do mine. Brilliant acting to be able to make you laugh and cry.

ive read quit a few things about werewolves and watched most the films but i dont no hows the best george is good as is jacob the block from underworld is all so good to

I love Company of Wolves but I think my favourite werewolf film is Ginger Snaps and/or Ginger Snaps 2.
And I know she wasn't a werewolf but she did change into an animal so how about Natassia Kinski in Cat People?

I think that's traditionally the point of werewolves: that they're victims even more so than their prey. I've nothing against the idea they can learn to control it, but that eradicates the whole curse aspect of it. Then it's like some unfashionable super power.

Russell really is gorgeous though isnt he - OK I'll never convince the harcore Mitchellettes but I do love George - he's such a lovely character and coupled with Russell's looks - just lovely :-)

Re your 37, I hope I speak for my fellow M's here when I say that no convincing is needed. We all adore George (and indeed Russell) and think he is absolutely wonderful. But it's just a different kind of 'adore'. For me personally, I just want to keep George safe and happy, and make sure we always have 'proper coffee' in, it's all very, well, for want of a better word, maternal.
And with Mitchell, it is soooo not that!!
But there is no doubt with us that George/Russell rules.

He is personally my favourite werewolf.
The werewolf in an American werewolf in london was ok but a bit.. I dunno, lacking. There was enough to the character.
George is definately MY favourite werewolf. Second is Remus Lupin.

Oooh I forgot about Lupin, yes I agree, 1st- George, 2nd- Lupin (the last movie is going to be soooo sad) and 3rd- ummmmmm MJ? No, Oz... mmmmm maybe?? Ok I think I only have a 1st and 2nd favourite. There are tonnes of Vampires about though... still reckon that Mitchell is my fave though, coz he doesn't wear a cape and stand in the shadows being all rubbish, he's cool.
I can't pick a George fave moment though coz there's just too many, though I did really like the touching bit when he's saying goodbye to Mitchell and Annie is being all grumpy with him, and we know he's about to do this really brave thing. And the bit where he's stressing about what shirt to wear (must be the only one who kinda liked the flowery number), and the 'I am not the paedo, that's my housemate'.

Oh yeah how could i possibly forget lupin?! Absolutely loved the character in the books and when I saw David as him - he's absolutely perfect! I know its going to be horrible when he dies :-( I'm still getting over Sirius' death - him and Lupin were my absolute favourites - my top 5 were always sirius, lupin, arthur weasley, dumbledore and the twins (yeah im counting them as one lol) ans then she goes and kills practically all of them off!
Although Arthur was originally going to die instead of Sirius in Order of the Phoenix so I guess at least they both didnt go!
Thing is the books are so good that you get really into it and think about it and talk about it as if it were real lol bit like BH :-S

oh yeah, Lupin! He is a fabulous character, I always liked him. He is even better in the book than the film. Although the werewolf in Prisoner of Azkaban was rubbish! Transformed-George is much better.

oh yes alan rickman is brilliant he's actually hilarious in real life apparently when they were filming harry potter and meant to be all serious and dark as snape always is and he kept making everyone laugh.
Yeah I agree about the transformation - I dont think Lupin's was particularly bad just different - not very wolf like - George looks more like a wolf when hes transformed but Lupin looks like some sort of wierd monster thing.
Also the thing I never got about Lupin - he says that the boys became animagi because he was no threat to them as animals but surely all wolves killl animals especially a rat and he would certainly fight another dog...i guess a stag could defend himself though but hmm is there an answer to that or did it just have to work for the book to work lol

Black Sheep is a brilliant New Zealand made comedy horror film directed by Jonathan King. Not quite were wolve but weresheep - worth watching though.
Its made in a similar style to Peter Jackson's early films such as Bad Taste and Braindead.

Ahhh, HumiliatedGrape! Wolf in 10th Kingdom was amazing and Scott Choen... well, he's yummy! I have to honestly say, though, George still hits the top spot for me. :D As a character and as a transformation.
And David Naughton play from An American Werewolf In London is another of my top favourite werewolves - that film set the bar for the more painful transformation sequences. And I personally love the wolf there - it does looke more like a bear but its purely an animal.
No-one has mentioned the werewolves in Dog Soldiers yet, I don't think... now they were cool wolves. Hehe!
Um, at risk of upsetting Lupin fans, I love the character but the wolf itself didn't really impress me though it does score points for looking like an animal instead of a man with fur on his face. :D
If you're talking transformations, I like the Lycan change in Ultraviolet, and I enjoyed the unusual one in Van Helsing where the man rips his skin off to reveal the wolf underneath, and vice versa for the change back. But, of course, the torturous changes in An American Werewolf In London and our beloved George's are my favourites by far... does that make me sadistic?

oh and KC dog soldiers ive seen butit was a while a go - is that the one where they superglue a blokes leg back on or something strange like that...i can rememeber something about superglue...or maybe i was just fixing an ornament at teh time lol

i think if you compare the budget of harry potter with the budget of being human and then the final result...im gonna have to go BH every time i love the fact its all done old school and i love the way they do his claws - its just so simple yet so effective
Although I do feel sorry for russell with the contacts - dont think its fair that he has to wear them and the vampires dont :-) although i know contacts wouldnt have realy worked for them...
Oh and i found this the other day not werewolf related but kind of transformation related- made me smile :-)

If you were Annabel you'd have to be pretty flattered really - that he (and presumably the crew) couldnt tell the difference between real pain/pleasure (not entirely sure which it would have been lol im guessing the first though) from your acting...

I do I havent watched them as much lately to be honest not sure why just got really back into my comedy stuff and been re watching loads of stand up...
But im still on here and the forum all the time and have been making videos so dont think theres any question of loyalty :-)

yes very we learned how to turn it on (a computer) how to change settings so now i can change my sceensaver and how to click and drag (we played solitaire for half an hour) then we had to write abit about are selves and paint a pretty picture on paint

Hello! It's been a while since I've posted (you most likely don't remember me at all!) and not had a chance to read through everything so apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere. Also it's not about werewolves but I've just posted in the most recent topic, sorry.
I was wondering if anyone knew why some of the soundtrack has been changed for the DVD, specifically Muse - Showbiz at the end of episode 2 which was the most PERFECT track for that scene (and one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite bands!) has gone. I first noticed the Muse track but have since noticed a few other songs have been changed too... Some, like the scene in the 80s club where we first meet Gilbert, could be because the music was quite loud in the original cut and you can hear the conversation between George and Mitchell better on the DVD, but why change a perfect track like Showbiz? I'm sure there is a good reason for it, I just wondered if anyone knew what it was!

oh ok, i guessed it would probably have something to do with copyright, but i wasn't sure. and didn't have time to go through everything here, my DVD didn't turn up for about a week after it came out and i stayed away from here in case of spoilers for the extras (not that that would have mattered too much as there weren't many!) but then i never did manage to catch up on comments!

Ive got this friend, he says the human condition, human nature, being...human is to be cold and alone, like someone lost in the woods it's safe to say he's a glass is half empty kinda guy. I see nature differently, I see the ancient machinery of the world, elegant and ferocious, neither not good or bad, its full of beautiful things...
Ahh I could listen to that voice all day :-) I do miss Guy :-( Yes Aidan is brilliant and right for the show etc etc but Guy's Mitchell was ridiculously sexy and just a brilliant character - even if they did steal loads of his lines from the pilot for Herrick in the series lol
Also love his eyes in it - the way they do the blacking out - the sort of flickering when hes saying "concentrate" and his eyes are flickering between black and normal whereas in the series its very definate and mitchell seems to have more control over when he shows it etc - Im guessing this was a concious thing but I did like the way it was done in the pilot...

I've just finished reading Lonely Werewolf girl by Martin Millar and I really liked it although it took a bit of getting into. It's about a clan of werewolves who are having a feud and it mixes fantasy elements with real life stuff --- you've got one werewolf who works as a fashion designer and twin sisters who are in a punk band and Kalix (the Lonely Werewolf Girl of the title) is a big Runaways fan and is hiding out after killing her father, the head of the werewolves.
In that book, most of the werewolves are born that way although you can become a werewolf by being bitten by one.

i think a good idea is that iron pills could be like methadon for the vamps , like a replacement for going clean , but vamps and lycans need it to live. its a food , il like to see gourge learning how to change at will it will bring new deepth to charter :)

I have seen loads of werewolf films,one of my favourites been van helsing (which wasnt actually about werewolves it just had them in it)and i loved the way the werewolves looked, but none of the werewolves i've seen even compared to george, the way he looked and transformed was amazing, it could of easily been mistaken for a documentary on real werewolves,anyways i cant wait for series 2, bye =]

There really isn't enough werewolf fiction in the book department, and there are only some films that do the werewolf justice. Van Helsing was one, (love the werewolf at the end)but George is a loveable werewolf, and you don't see many of them.

I agree. There isn't that much literature to dwell on when it comes to werewolves (can I use lycans instead?), as compared to vampires and ghosts. However, what I've learned so far is that lycans gain mastery over their transformation over time... literally.
In a sense, they are similar to vampires, who after a certain period of time gain more skills (or power, whichever you prefer). Lycans, well it's like, the skills development take longer than the vamps do. And, when they do, the lycans pack more power in their punches (figuratively speaking), as compared to the vamps (no offense). Interestingly, the vamps are more poised and graceful (like cats), as compared to the lycans... a bit primal (and I don't want to say, "like dogs").
George, as a lycan, is still very young, which explains why he has no mastery over his transformations yet. Give it a hundred years or so, then maybe he can transform at will... and maybe do some neat tricks to :)
