It's been announced that the BBC iPlayer has introduced a beta service of downloads for Linux and Macs.

For more details see this BBC News story and blog post from the Guardian and press release.

This service is offered as part of the iPlayer labs and you have to be signed up to the labs in order to access the downloads.

Could you add some information on the fact that only some shows are available in the new format at the moment?

I spent hours last night trying to make it work only to find out the download link was only available on a Buzzcocks episode.

Can you tell me where to find the download link for the Mac version? I'm signed up to iPlayer Labs, but there's no link there that I can see.

You don't need to download it ahead of time. Just click on a download link on an episode and I think the install takes care of itself at that point. But there's few episodes available for Linux/Mac at the moment. I expect these will start appearing over the coming days.

the link is http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/install/bbc_iplayer_desktop (they put it on twitter, but it seems not to be anywhere else)

I've tried installing it a few times now (using debian linux) but it keeps giving me a 5100 error - I've tried looking up what it means, but to no avail.

Just to ask for clarification, does this mean that even if i've installed the software via the link then I still need to be signed up to Labs to access it?

If so, it seems rather odd. Especially as I didn't have to be signed up to install the software, so it seems a bit of a non-obvious criterion.

Yes I think you do have to be signed up to Labs even if you've installed the application via the link.
