Pic Of The Day: Freebase

Above is Kirrily Robert who came to the Broadcast Centre late in August to talk about Freebase, "an open, shared database of the world's knowledge". She gave FM&T and anyone else interested an overview on how it works and some of its applications and APIs. And here are the slides:

"Freebase"? Really? Let's name our product after the precursor to the crack epidemic, which consigned thousands of inner-city residents to a life of crime and poverty. Is that an oversight, or trying to be cool? What would Grandmaster Flash say?

I think it is more likely a portmanteau of the words "Free" and "Database" devised by people who don't get out enough.
