Have you seen chicks in the nest this week?

Martin Hughes-Games Martin Hughes-Games | 16:21 UK time, Friday, 2 October 2009

We are getting reports from people up and down the country of chicks still being fed in the nest, in October? Quite a number of house martins in particular.

I hadn't realised how late some birds will still nest until I started looking into it, but if you have noticed chicks in the nest again this week, could you tell us below by posting a comment. We'd like to try to build up a picture of just how late birds are nesting this year, and which species they are.

Thank you very much!

It's a bit difficult to tell at the moment but there is a lot of suspicious activity from Blue Tits diving in and out under our thatch. I've never seen them there before.

But it's not just birds breeding late. I have been taking in very young hedgehogs (3-4 weeks old). This will be the second year in a row they've had late litters. Last winter I was brought a 6 week old hoglet on January 6th.

Regarding Autumn Chicks, we currently have a family of swallows still feeding chicks in the roof of my workshop. We live in Ythanwells, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. They come every year without fail, however we have never known them to be still trying to raise a brood this late on! My wife is worried they will be too late to migrate successfully, or the chicks will simply fail to fledge.

Noticed lots of posts about pigeons and doves still with young. This is not that unusual, especially considering the mild weather. All the pigeon family, I think all (ie Columbidae (?? !) - pigeons and doves) are well known for breeding all year round given the chance. Certainly 'town pigeons' but also woodpigeons and collared doves will often be found nesting or with young in the middle of winter. If their instinct tells them that the weather is mild enough I guess there's nothing to lose in giving it a go! I think more birdspecies than we truly realise have the capability of successfully breeding well outside the traditional accepted breeding season. The more chicks parent birds can get out in a season/year the better for passing on there genes, the ultimate goal.

On 20 September 2009 we started pruning our bay tree. We noticed old nests in the tree as we were cutting it down, but did not imagine that any of them would contain chicks. Later in the day, when we were 2/3rds through pruning we noticed a wood pigeon staying close by, despite the sound of the chain saw. We just thought it was probably confused to see its roosting spot being disturbed. The next morning we noticed a wood pigeon in the tree sitting on a nest that we had assumed would have been long discarded. However, there were 2 chicks inside. The chicks must have been terrified. The nest is now horribly exposed, and naturally when we realised chicks were inside we stopped all work on the tree. For the past 2 weeks the parent birds have been busy feeding the chicks, they are now about the size of a small collared dove and today one flew a short distance to get to its parent. The other chick is slightly smaller and still on the nest but I am assuming will probably go tomorrow. We were so sorry that we had invaded their space and security but despite this the parents have nurtured these chicks despite everything. No wonder wood pigeons are successful!

This year the first one arrived on 11 April and there was a full house ( six pairs by this year) within the fortnight to 25 April. They have produced two broods and left by about 25 September. But I noticed an extra nest on the adjoining house which neither I nor my neighbour had previously noticed. They are still feeding young ( as of today 2 October), .....late just like the original ones we first encountered here!

Not sure where to put this next bit of info but we were very worried about BLACKBIRDS visiting our garden during spring and summer this year. Many had BALD places. Not just the odd feather missing, but complete, white skin showing, bald bits, mostly on one or other side of their heads but one was bald all over his breast and one side of his head. This phenomemon was only seen in MALES (about 5 or 6 of them) and other than this, they seemed healthy in every other respect. However, they all soon disapeared from our garden altogether. On visiting The Long Mynd near Church Stretton in Shropshire during June, we observed a JACKDAW with the same balding problem. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this may be occuring?

Every year in late September I am anxious about the ability of the late families to succeed, but they always do. They stay about a week after the young start flying, then they leave. This year is definitely later than usual but it is not too cold and there are still a lot of insects for food.

However, after one and then two weeks, they too departed, we presumed they got together with other migrating parties. This year two broods were produced quite quickly and the male was keen to go again, very noisy chats took place over ten days in the garage, but the lady was not moved this year. Another thing is that ours left very early this year, we have had no sightings since 16 September.

    Another answer to your question:
“Have you seen chicks in the nest this week?”
Yes a pair of pigeon fledglings in our wisteria. We have wisteria on the east and south facing walls of our house. This is the third brood this year. We left the nest through the summer and finally removed it, when the second pair of fledglings vacated it, this was about mid August. While I was pruning the creeper and removing the nest, I was being given a very stony stare by a mature pigeon, perched on the gutter. As soon as I had taken my ladder down she (presumably) began to build again, in a part which I had not yet cut back. Fortunately, they are, I think, nearly ready to fly, judging by the size of the previous pair of fledglings before they flew. I hope they make it, before the bad weather hits. We seem to be favoured kindly by the weather, though, near Bournemouth.
Incidentally our Rhododendron is flowering as well.

Last weekend i treated the grass in the front garden and saw a whit egg at the foot of our tree . I looked up and there was a collared dove sitting on eggs - i thought was odd as it was late september.

More inmportantly this now brings the tally of nests in our gardens to 7 in total - we have a Robin , wren , house sparrow ,dove in front garden , pidgeon at the very back of the garden . blackbird and great tits.
We have also had for the first time a group of collared doves 8-10 number feeding in the garden - we have the usual starlings but i thought this was odd please let me know.
Its a great way to relax before work - to chill with a coffee watching out of the rear patio and seeing up to 20 birds in the garden within space of 15mins from maybe 10 species .
We have 3 boys 8,6,5 and they are fascinated by it all .

Unfortunately, we were too late to save one but we have taken the other two (nest as well!) indoors as it is very cold at night now and they are thriving on mealworms. Luckily, they are well grown but they will not be able to follow the others on migration. We are not sure what happens when they decide they want to fly! Taking each day as it comes. If there are so many, is anyone planning a rescue mission to fly these late fledglings out to Africa once they are ready?!!! Could I take them myself, I wonder?

We have I believe to be canadian geese at our local pond and they have been here all summer and had two young.

Yes, last week I have seen 3 barn swallow chicks in the nest. Not in an area with lots of mud and straw but under the roof of the recovery pool where sick seal are being looked after. This pair of swallows seem to prefer an environment of dunes, seawater and fish: sea swallows?
Every year they nest at Ecomare, a seal sanctuary on the isle of Texel (The Netherlands) at the border of the North Sea and Wadden Sea.

The chicks just left the nest a few days ago and are still being fed by their parents, who refuse to leave for a warmer place.

An other survey near Texel: last week a Leatherback turtle was seen swimming around Texel. Very rare for this area! But more strange is that a week before, a dead one was found on a beach nearby!

We pulled over and picked the little one up, it was definately a youngster as it still had woolly down on it's back and on some of the wings.

I wasn't sure what to do with it, the winds really were quite bad so there would have been no way it could have gotten back into a tree and stayed there for any length of time, so we went into a grove of trees beside where it was on the road and popped it down on the ground making sure it had plenty of cover to hide it away from any cats that were prowling about.

Today 10oct there are two swallows nests in the eaves of my neighbours house. Both have young after two previous hatchings. We live in north west Essex. The parents are obviously able to catch plenty of food at present as they are constantly in and out of the nests feeding the young. In fact around midday today there were at least twenty swallows in the air catching a surfeit of ladybirds. As with other bloggers we are concerned that they may be too late to get fully fledged and strong enough to migrate. We have already had one frost in this area, with another forecast. This will probably have an effect on the insect food supply for these poor hard working birds.

There are collared doves nesting in a tree in the middle of my nan's garden in Ramsey, Cambs. When we visited last weekend (3/4 Oct) the doves were taking turns to sit very tight on the nest in strong winds. Since then my nan has seen one, or perhaps two, little heads popping up - they've hatched! Not sure what its/their chances are. This is apparently the doves' fourth (!) go this year; in total at least 3 chicks have fledged successfully and one other sadly flew into a window. I know it's not really a good idea to photograph/video nesting birds but I have still photos and video of the doves nesting, but not of the chicks. They were quite unperturbed by me being in the garden.

It appeared to be very weak but wouldn't (or couldn't) take any food and after a couple of hours died. We wondered if it had fallen from the nest possibly as a result of tree-felling going on nearby.

We are sure that a cat would have got it sooner or later as it just sat there and was easily picked up. What to do - sibling is in the tree with parent so should it be OK?

The request made in early October for information on fledglings has certainly generated a lot of interest. They each make 6 or 7 visits when they have a few pecks at the nuts and fly off always in the same direction then they finally return and feed themselves.

We have had blackbirds nesting this year but haven't seen them for a while. However we did see what looked like either a willow or marsh tit (We usually have coal tits but this one didn't have the white nape)and this bird was giving alarm calls so could be protecting a nest?
