Have you heard a chiffchaff this week?

Martin Hughes-Games Martin Hughes-Games | 16:17 UK time, Friday, 2 October 2009

I was up at 6.30 this morning and there was a wonderful, uplifting, dawn chorus going on - but, hang on... dawn chorus in autumn? Have you heard birds actually singing recently? In particular have you heard the chiffchaff's characteristic song? (To remind yourself of the song click on the play button on the RSPB web page).

If you have heard a chiff chaff, specifically this week, could you please let me know by posting a comment below?

On the Mendips btw, if location's important.

I took a stick and began pushing at this mess when from it flew a wood pigeon and two eggs fell to the ground! We had these birds nesting in a holly tree earlier in the year but never considered this could have been another nest.

They can be heard most days in the garden. Yesterday heard and then saw one in the holly tree between my house and the next house. The buildings are about 5 yards apart. This is in Hythe Hampshire.
I have also heard them in Totton Hampshire over the last few weeks when I visit there.
I am convinced the Robin in the garden has been serenading a mate
in September. Young fluffy Bluetits have been feeding on the nut feeder in the garden in the last couple of weeks.
The pigeons have been flying about carrying twigs which is more behaviour associated with Spring nesting.
My Foxgloves are still flowering. Is this really October?

So is it a Chiff Chaff, its driving me mad trying to identify it!!

I saw a Chiffchaff in my garden feeding on aphids which were on an Oak tree on the 1st of October and there are still small flocks of up to 20 swallows flying around in the fields where I live, and a couple of house martins, but the swifts and sand martins are long gone and I saw my first fieldfare today and a flock of golden plover. I've been doing survey work for Birdwatch Ireland as part of local surveys and the Bird Atlas Project and Willow Warblers and Chiffchaffs are increasing in numbers alot in my survey area and Chiffchaffs are believed to be overwintering in coastal areas, it is strange that Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers are doing so well here but Spotted Flycatchers are in real trouble considering that they have the same diet, habitat and winter in Africa, the very wet summer for the 3rd year in a row impacted on many species but Nightjars bred successfully for the first time so I hope to preserve the habitat in the future. I found only one breeding pair in my survey area this year where formerly up to 10 pairs were common, maybe climate change is affecting them in there wintering grounds. All the Irish swallows are off to blomfontein in South Africa so I wish them well and hope that I'm around to see them return to nest in my shed again next year. Springwatch and Autumnwatch are fantastic programs and I hope they continue to grow and to promote wildlife everywhere.

There were 2 singing there on the 20th.
Why are they singing now ?? - are they actually trying to hold territory ?? - or is it just a response to the length of day as someone else suggested ??

We're long standing contributors to BTO's GardenBirdwatch and our records show that we had at least one chiffchaff still with us in the 2nd week of Novemebr last year, however don't recall whether they were calling.

Owing to climate change some birds may now possibly overwinter and start to prepare for the next spring's breeding season. Any comments?

Yepp, I heard the unmistakable call of a chiffchaff at about 3.30pm on Monday 28 Sep. The bird was clearly visible sitting high up in a tree in a garden 2 doors away from mine in Benson Oxfordshire. It called in several short bursts over about a minute or two and then flew off.

I heard a chiffchaff the other day in virtually central Norwich. I was so surprised I had to stop and listen to make sure, but a chiffchaff it was!
We've also been watching a robin getting all emotional over my car for several days now. I park it in the same place at work most days and the robin has been under it, over it, all around it plus sitting on the wing mirrors, for most of the day. Am I right in thinking this is probably territorial behaviour - I know robins start this behaviour early, but this early?:-/
