Great Northern Dot?!

Stephen Moss | 16:30 UK time, Wednesday, 5 November 2008

DON'T FORGET WE'RE ON THE AIR AT 7PM TONIGHT!!!!!

Autumnwatch contributor (and good friend of mine) Dominic Couzens arrived to see the show today - and while waiting to catch the ferry from Sandbanks spotted a new arrival in the harbour. Not a cormorant, or a shag, but a great northern diver - which has migrated here from its breeding grounds in Iceland.

By the time wildlife producer Nigel and cameraman Pete had been mobilised, there was good and bad news. The good news - we'd spotted the bird. The bad news - it was all the way over by Studland beach, on the very far side of the harbour. So at dawn tomorrow Pete will be out again to see if he can get a closer shot for tomorrow's final programme.

In the meantime we have another visitor - Simon (and his whole crew, led by producer Martin) have made the long trek down from Anglesey to Studland Bay. Having arrived, they realised that the murky waters mean that there is no way they can do a live dive tonight.

So instead, they've moored up five minutes walk away from my office, on the pier at Brownsea. And tonight, Simon will attempt a live dive in the waters just offshore. Fingers crossed he'll find some pretty amazing stuff.

Gordon is still watching the seals - and brings us the continued family saga of Nemo and his mum - will the little pup survive? And Bill and Kate continue to bring us the sights and sounds of Brownsea - including a very lost water rail, a bird that squeals like a pig from the reeds!

As always, keep sending us your comments - either on this blog or via the Messageboard - and of course we love seeing your great pictures on Flickr and video footage on our uploader.

Lots of events on the menu tonight as well - stuff you can do after we go off air tomorrow night, and for the rest of the autumn season to come. Check out the Breathing Places event finder - all you need is your postcode!

All the best - Stephen

We have seen muntjac deer both this year and last year near Tenbury Wells in Worcestershire - along the Highwood lane and on the edge of Kyre Park towards the Bromyard Road.

It would have been nice if someone could have been bothered to put a message on BBC1 at 7pm warning of the change!

Yet again the schedulers show utter contempt for the viewers!!

Sorry to use the comments section to complain but since getting this off my chest will be good for my health I'll continue...

Why did the election of a new President of the USA come as such a surprise to the BBC (whose coverage has been ludicrously overdone anyway, but that's another story) that they had to hijack tonight's schedule to squeeze in yet another programme?? We've had late work committments all week and have not been able to catch up on our taped programme from Tuesday so we didn't see the announcement. Certainly it wasn't mentioned as late as Monday's programme so I set the video based on the RT timings. Aargh! iPlayer is not the same (don't want to have to huddle round the PC to watch the prog). Please do a terrestrial repeat of tonight's programme (doesn't matter if it's 3 in the morning) so that we can tape it and watch it from our comfy sofa in front of a nice log fire.
    THANKS!

muntjak deer - I live on the herefordshire/Worcestershire border on the Malvern hills and we have had Muntjack deer in the area and I have this year seen one for the first time and also have had them in my garden. They like to browse on the Rose Bay Willowherb that I have in the wilder parts of the garden. They often get blown over and then they eat thenew buds and leaves. I have also seen their hoof prints in mud on the footpath along the top of the garden

We've seen (last week) a number of Great Nothern Divers in Torridon. Go and see, it's beautiful at the moment (always actually), with the snow on the mountain tops.
