The deer quiz...

Stephen Moss | 16:18 UK time, Monday, 27 October 2008

On tonight's Autumnwatch, Simon set us all a test - which set of deer antlers belongs to which of four different deer species - red, fallow, roe and muntjac?

deer_antlers.jpg

Incidentally, can you also tell us which of these are native species and which were introduced to Britain?

And for the really keen cervophile (deer enthusiast to you and me), can you name the other two British species - both non-native ones?

None of those look like muntjac antlers.

The other two are the sika and the Chinese water deer.

Contrary to some previous comments, fallow did used to be an indigenous species but became extinct some 40,000 years ago in the last ice age. Historians seem to differ as to whether the Romans or the Normans reintroduced the fallow deer.

The Red is I think the only native species.
I believe the Roe was introduced by the romans, the fallow by the normans then much later the sika that originate from Japan, comprising of three sub species Japanese sika, formosan sika and manchurian sika. These deer escaped from private collections and are gradually spreading throughout the UK.

Fallow Deer(Dama Dama) was introduced by the normans in the eleventh century.

Roe Deer(Capreolus capreolus) became extinct in most of england in the 18th century but was reintroduced in the 19th century. So they were native but had to be reintrintroduced.

Roe deer are the only ones that are native to the U.K. The other three are introduced. The two other introduced deer are the Chinese Water Deer and the Sika Deer.
The antlers (clockwise from top left) are Muntjac, Roe, Red, Fallow.

    Roe and red the natives.

Muntjac we think are Chinese Water Deer, and the other introduced one...well, we still think its reindeer, even if its only a once a year migration. Just kidding, we think there is a herd of them somewhere in Scotland

I have seen a muntjack deer in my garden in the city of Lincoln. It was the first sighting recorded in this area. I saw it in the afternoon. My neighbour saw it at dawn the next day.
