The deer quiz...
On tonight's Autumnwatch, Simon set us all a test - which set of deer antlers belongs to which of four different deer species - red, fallow, roe and muntjac?

Incidentally, can you also tell us which of these are native species and which were introduced to Britain?
And for the really keen cervophile (deer enthusiast to you and me), can you name the other two British species - both non-native ones?

I think -
Clockwise from the top left: roe (native, died out, then reintroduced), sika (introduced), fallow (introduced by the Normans), red (native).
None of those look like muntjac antlers.
The other two are the sika and the Chinese water deer.

Red Deer(Cervus Elaphus) is native to the UK.
Fallow Deer(Dama Dama) was introduced by the normans in the eleventh century.
Roe Deer(Capreolus capreolus) became extinct in most of england in the 18th century but was reintroduced in the 19th century. So they were native but had to be reintrintroduced.
Muntjac deer(Muntiancus reevesi) was introduced to woburn park in bedfordshire in the early 20th century - but many escapees have reproduced and they are living in the wild now.
2 other deers that are non-native are Sika deer and reindeer.
Sika deer(Cervus nippan) were introduced to parks in 1860 but some escapees have been reproducing and are now living in the wild.
Reindeer(Rangifer tarandus) were introduced and have been domesticated.
Pere David's deer and Axis deer have been introduced in exclusive parks as well.

I do not think there is a muntjac among this lot so i think it may be a trick question as thay could all be from the red deer but at different stages depending on the age of the deer.if that is not right this may be :-
top left sika/muntjac
top right fallow deer
bottom left red deer
bottom right roe deer

Roe deer are the only ones that are native to the U.K. The other three are introduced. The two other introduced deer are the Chinese Water Deer and the Sika Deer.
The antlers (clockwise from top left) are Muntjac, Roe, Red, Fallow.

Roe and red the natives.
Muntjac we think are Chinese Water Deer, and the other introduced one...well, we still think its reindeer, even if its only a once a year migration. Just kidding, we think there is a herd of them somewhere in Scotland

I have seen a muntjack deer in my garden in the city of Lincoln. It was the first sighting recorded in this area. I saw it in the afternoon. My neighbour saw it at dawn the next day.

This has nothing to do with the quiz apart from the fact that it is about deer, but what happened to Percy and all the other deer we knew from last year?! Or are you filming a different group?
