Have you seen any Muntjacs?
If you saw Wednesday night's show, you'll recall Simon made an appeal for sightings of our smallest deer, the Muntjac. Originally from China, the Muntjac was introduced to Woburn Abbey in the 19th century, and has been spreading outwards ever since. Despite now probably being the commonest deer species in Britain, it can be very hard to see.
Simon gave us some really useful tips on how to know if you have Muntjac in your neighbourhood - the staccato, dog-like bark, the tiny footprints, and if you are lucky enough to catch sight of one, its tiny size - less than half that of a Roe Deer. So do let us know via this blog if you have Muntjac where you live.

Hi Guys - I live on the Clwydian Hills in North Wales, and we have had a partial sighting of a Muntjak in our local forest, along with many evenings listening to their "barking". Also, during the summer, we get an annual visit of Nightjars. Quite an eclectic mix !

We have a muntjac who visits the old orchard behind our house in Warwickshire to eat fallen apples. It is often also spied early in the morning walking on the village footpath from the church and down the main road

A little colony can be seen at night under the M3 bridge on the Northington road. 1/2 a mile from where it comes off the old A road between Winchester and Basingstoke. it is heavily wooded there, mostly conifer plantation with some beech. they have been seen there often over at least the last 4 years, generally half a dozen or so at a time. maybe its warm there?

I often see muntjac when I'm walking my dog round Hertfordshire and Essex, they're not at all timid - quite the opposite. One jumped onto a path just a few feet ahead of me a couple of weeks ago, gave me and the dog a hard stare and then vanished into the adjacent woodland.
They will come really close to people and houses. There are many in and near Harlow (Essex), Broxbourne (Herts) and all along the River Stort and Lee Valley Park-lands. You can see them at all times of day.
They can do a fair bit of damage with those tusks; I try and keep out of their way to be honest and my dog wears a bell when he's off-lead to encourage them (and other wildlife) to move away.

simon said that they think the deer travel along the train lines, and there is a train line near where we saw the m.j deer, i had heard before that they thought that grey squirrels travelled that way too.

We have muntjacs at a property we own in Redditch (B97 5JS). Wire Hill wood and Rough Hill wood surround the property. We live in Worcester but have the property mentioned on the market.

I live in the Chiltern Forrest near Reading. I see often see Muntjacs in broad daylight while out walking my dog. Its also common to see them foraging by the side of the road at night. They seem to co-exist quite happily with the fallow deer that I see much less often. Typically if I see a Muntjac it will keeps its distance but not run away. The Fallow deer will run off as soon as they know I am there.
I have not noticed any damage to the extensive crops of bluebells we get every spring.

I regularly see muntjac in Chalkney Woods at Earls Colne, Essex. They are quite confident in these woods and have been there for the past 24 years that I have lived here. Was lucky enough to see two males rutting one day.

Living in Sandridge, on the outskirts of Melksham (SN12 7QS) we frequently hear Muntjacs bark at night and they visit our garden. One morning my husband found one in the garage!
We also get visits from Roe deer throughout the year.

Muntjac are common around Hertford Heath and one visits our garden in the autumn, spring and winter. It has obviously been hit by something at some time but is quite happy wandering around our garden and along the road even in daylight. It will come right up to the french windows to eat carrot that is left out for it.

We very often see Muntjac where we keep our horses near a landfill site in North Wiltshire. The horses let us know when they are about as they are often 'spooked' by them. We have also had three or four Fallow Deer sharing the grazing with the horses. Other wildlife we see are Buzzards, Hobbys, Owls, Kestrels, Woodpeckers, Badgers and a Red Kite! It's amazing being so near to a very busy landfill site.

We have muntjak in our gardent frequently, a single female usually comes 3-4 days every week, often sleeping here between feeding.
We also have males, sometimes young males and females, always alone though.
Last year we had a baby muntjak born in our garden, and had the new baby, mum and a large male in the garden most of the day during/after birth. We watched mum chasing squirrels away when they got too close, the squirrels were nearly as big as baby.
We have hours of video and hundreds of photos, and we live in a modern house by another 10 houses, in Burwell, Cambridgeshire. We just love them and name them all...

Hi, we see a lot of Muntjac deer in Hatfield Forest near Bishops Stortford in Herts. Early one Sunday morning saw 4 in about 5 mins -also, a lot of Fallow deer (especially in the middle of the roads!)

See Muntjacs 2-3 times a week training huskys in Hevingham & Bacton Woods nr Norwich.
Also last Autumn saw a white Red Deer Stag with two white Hinds whilst on the A11 near Thetford.

While untangling my fishing line on the banks of Swinsty Reservoir, near Harrogate in Yorkshire, a muntjac came with 30 yards of me before getting my scent. This was about four or five years ago and the deer was so close it was very easy to identify - yet a so-called expert told me there were no muntjac in Yorkshire!

We have two small deers they look similar to your Wednesday programme,
They seem to be there more or less permenatly, for some months two or three have been visible at odd times during the day. This morning two seemed to be having a play fight. Last year there was a family, two full grown rather larger than your display but with the two horns and one young one.
Two years ago we had a short visit from a larger deer with a fine spread of antler I assume a fallow deer.

Can you explain why the squirrel plays along and runs up one pole to the original table, then across the rope ladder to the second table. Why doesn't he just skip along the ground, taking the shortest path, and run up the pole to the second table to reach the nuts?

There are lots of muntjacs in the woods around High Wycombe. Our house backs onto woodland and we had 2 - a male (no tusks but one broken and one bent antler) and a female just this morning. We usually see family groups during the summer.
They are bad news for gardeners! I have to construct netting fences round my runner beans and tie twists of human hair to my roses and raspberries to keep them off them. They do not like the smell and it seems to work. Enzymes in their saliva can kill rose bushes, apparently.
Despite this it is still delightful to see them. We also see plenty of roe deer when we go walking in the Chilterns countryside.

I have seen one muntjac deer in Merton, North Devon - I was at a Heavy Horses show on the Clinton Estate & saw one running incredibly fast along the edge of the woods there - some lady actually pointed it out to me, it was the size of a fox, maybe a bit taller, but boy could it run!

Small groups of muntjac are frequently sighted during daylight in open fields around Gimmingham near the north Norfolk coast. Their distinctive high pitched 'bark' can be heard around residential gardens near the fields at night.

There are muntjac deer in the village where my parents live, on the Suffolk/Essex border. They are often seen near woods on the Suffolk side of the border and in the more northern woods of the village. Recently I had a muntjac run into the road in front of me, it was beautiful. I have seen many in this village for several years, they seem to have become quite successful in this area.

Frequently see muntjac around our farm in Suffolk. Have never heard one bark but last year heard what sounded like a baby being murdered round the back of one of our farm buildings and found a muntjac trapped with its head stuck in stock fencing. I released it and it immediately vanished into shrubs. I believe they have poor eyesight as I have often seen one on open ground before it has seen me and by standing still they have come quite close before realising a human was present. The visual feature that I have found most noticeable is the large white tails of the bucks. They hold them erect like the plume worn by Royal Horse Artillery officers in full dress and, unlike the tusks or facial markings, you can see them over large distances. I don't know whether the buck's tails are displayed throughout the year.

We often have muntjac at our home in Cookham Dean in Berkshire. We are quite near 'the Wild Woods'. Once we had 3 in our garden at the same time. Our cats are rather bemused by them!

We have had a Muntjac [called 'Monty'] in our garden in Lowestoft and it took a liking to eating the leaves of our rose bushes for 3 days. Also there was Muntjac at the rear of my Pharmacy which overlooks the most easterly point in Britain and we had it removed by the Hopton wildlife hospital.
Finally I have seen several on our golf course at Gorelston. Golf courses seem to be a haven for Muntjac

I saw a muntjac deer coming out of Frimley Lodge Park in Surrey this year. I didn't know what it was so went to see the park ranger. He told me that they are quite common and that they come across from Windsor Great Park.

When we lived in Quendon just outside Saffron Walden in Essex, muntjac were the most common visitors to our garden which was in the middle of woods either side of the Cambridge road. They got in under the hedge. I believe they had originally been escapees from Mole Hall, a nearby wildlife park. They merrily stripped everything edible from the vegetable garden - even worse than wood pigeons and rabbits.
Sadly, they were also the most common road traffic accident victims- the road from Stansted to Saffron Walden is a racetrack.

My wife and I watched a muntjac this afternoon in the field next to our garden here in Hundon, Suffolk. It or another has been seen many times before. But only seen not heard. The field is part of a stud farm with gentle mares. When an army helicopter flew over the deer look up briefly and then disappeared into the hedgerow on the path of the local fox family.

I live in Bovingdon on the Herts/Bucks borders..we have muntjacs here in the woods on the edge of the village. In the mornings driving through the villages of Flaunden and Latimer I often see them.
And one Christmas Eve in the Waitrose car park in Chesham at about 6.15am one made its way across the tarmac - only to reappear to the bemusement of the commuters waiting for the Met Line - walking along the edge of the track. Fortunately it took fright and bounded off into the trees. No-one would have believed us if our tube had been delayed on Christmas Eve by a deer - even if it wasn't a reindeer

I live in North Wootton near Kings Lynnin Norfolk and I believe the area of woodland near to my home (North Wootton Woods) is home to a number of the Mintjac deer. I first saw one about 18 months ago. It was just sitting in the path until I approached and then it went into the undergrowth. I looked it up and identified it as a Muntjac. This year I have seen these deer on at least 5 occasions this year. I would therefore surmise that the population of these deer is increasing significantly.

weve had then in our garden, Streetly Sutton Coldfield B74. were a few hundred yards from sutton park where there is a lot of muntjacks. a railway line runs through the park and two gardens away from our house which makes us think that they are coming along the railway line (as discussed in the program)

I live in Wroughton, near Swindon, Wilts. I often see Roe deer in the Woodland Trust fairly newly planted forest on the edge of the village when walking my dog; I am fairly sure I have seen muntjacs too. The 1st one I saw
I thought it was a dog because it was so small! I think they retreat to Clouts

My husband and I have both seen a muntjac deer by the Mill Stream in Rushmere St Andrew, Ipswich.
This is a local nature reserve close to Foxhall Stadium, home of Ipswich Witches Speedway team.
We think it is a female and one or other of us has seen it on 5 occasions over the last year

We regularly see muntjacs in the Stroud Valleys in Glos. Unfortunately most sightings are when they run across the road when you're driving, they seem to be most active from about 1730hrs onwards.
Although it's not a muntjac, below are links to a story in our local papers about deer being spotted living on a roundabout in Gloucester, the article does mention that muntjacs are causing a problem with deer, as there is not enough management of them. I have seen muntjacs in the vicinity of the roundabout so would not be surprised if they don't visit it as well.

i currently work in an open prison near Redditch and i regularly see muntjac deer in and around the woods/lake that surrounds the prison. You can also hear the distinctive barking noise as dusk approaches.

I've seen muntjac deer when I go out riding on ponies, between Wisbech and peterborough in Cambridgeshire. They don't seem to 'see' the human and don't find horses threatening so they'll just watch calmly as we pass them, or even if we stop to watch them back. I've seen four fairly close in the last couple of years, and other more distant sightings (which can't have been anything else, far too small to be roes) and I look at their tracks every time I ride off-road down a particular track. Sadly we also came across a dead one once, hit by a car, at a distance I thought it was a gingery colour long-legged dog, so I went to have a look incase it had a collar tag with a phone number so I could let the owners know the bad news, but it was a muntjac, very sad to see but also interesting to see and touch one so close up. No, I don't go round prodding dead animals usually, I was just curious what deer's fur felt like!

Muntjacs are regular visitors at the bottom of our garden (Sible Hendingham North Essex) in a field that is over grown apart from an area we have cleared near our garden fence, only this morning I saw a male , female and two young all viewed from my bathroom window it is great see and I love being able to view them without disturbing them.
On occasion they venture into the garden the only problem with that is some of my flowers disappear!!

I ride around the Belbroughton, Dodford, Chaddesley area of Worcestershire and regularly see muntjac. Have seen as many as ten together, but more usually only one or two. Haven't seen any in the past two weeks though.

Muntjac have been seen on the side of the M1, where this borders the Grand Union Canal and the railway in Northamptonshire in a small wooded area. The exact place is a hamlet called Muscott about three miles east of Daventry. There is a bridal path that crosses all three, rail, road and canal and they have been seen numerous times in the spot.

I live in Hinckley in Leicestershire and work in a distribution centre on an industrial estate in the town. I have seen Muntjacs on a piece of wasteground right next to my warehouse, where lorries are frequently passing by!

Hi, we live in South Wiltshire and have seen Muntjac next to the A350 near Willoughby Hedge and also at Ladydown between Tisbury and Chilmark. They are fantastic little deer and I'm glad to have them in my area :-).

I saw a single Muntjac deer in mid-July in the Dersingham Nature Reserve, north Norfolk. I only spotted it in the long grass because I saw a movement out of the corner of my eye. It was not at all shy of me and I took several photos of it. Someone subsequently told me that Muntjacs come from the nearby Sandringham Estate.

We live in Swindon town and our garden backs onto the wilts&berks canal. We see Muntjacs regularly, even resting by our swimming pool while we are sitting outside not more than 15 yards away. And they are well behaved - they dont eat the flowers or the bluebells and seem to do very little damage at all. We are happy to have them in our garden.

We regularly (more often in Spring and with young) get muntjac in our garden at the foot of Clent Hills North Worcestershire and virtually nightly hear their calls from the woods. Very common.

I saw a muntjac in Redditch next to a busy dual carriageway at 3 o'clock one July afternoon.
I thought it was a fox so stopped the car wondering what it was doing out in the afternoon only to realise it was a deer.
Incidentally on the same stretch of road I've had to wait for a roe deer to stop panicking and run along the road before it ran into a housing estate!

We live in High Wycombe, just off a dual-carriageway. Not only are Muntjac common they are getting more and more open and brazen. A pair is regular in ours and the two adjecent gardens where they lie-up in broad daylight and even come right up to our conservatory to feed. We have also had Roe Deer and the size difference was spectacular. Our Muntjac are also very photogenic.

I’ve seen Muntjac deer in north Suffolk. The first time was a herd running across a field just north of Blythburgh during the night time. Recently I saw a pair during the daytime in Darsham.
In the south of Suffolk it’s invariably Red Deer that I’ve actually seen (and plenty of them too) but I’ve heard that an unspecified species of deer is coming along the train lines at night right into Ipswich and raiding the allotments. I’ve certainly heard a call like a Muntjac in the area around these allotments in Ipswich at night time. I didn’t realise what the call was until I heard it on Autumn Watch last night.
The species I’ve seen most regularly is definitely the Red Deer which seems very common in Suffolk. I even found myself in the middle of a herd on the move once, whilst walking through woods near Woodbridge. I’ve seen Fallow Deer as well and possibly a Chinese Water Deer at Minsmere (could’ve been another Muntjac though). Strangely, I’ve never seen any Roe Deer.

Hi, we live in Caversham, Berks, close to the Thames and have a family of Muntjac which visits regularly. They venture close to the house and feast on any flower available. We often hear their distinctive bark.

At least one muntjac lives in the overgrown grounds of an abandoned farmhouse in centre of Ashwell in North Herts. The property's owner has recently passed away and we suspect that the valuable land will be sold to developers for housing. Would there be any protection for the Muntjac's habitat?

About 5 years ago, we started seeing muntjac just north of the A47, around our village of Beeston, in mid-Norfolk. There have been lots down in the Brecks for many years now, and all through the Thetford Forest, but friends who know a bit about deer said back then that the A47 acted like a barrier to them spreading. Well, not anymore (and probably not very likely back then either) and they are certainly about up here on the North Coast. Barking not uncommon, though sightings slightly harder, but we've seen them disappearing behind hedgerows, or slinking about on field edges.

I saw a creature a couple of months back on Ross-on-Wye Golf Club in the Dymock Woods, Herefordshire. At the time i wasn't sure what it was, small dear, a boar perhaps, it didn't seem quite right for either. Having seen the program the other night I'm now certain that it was a Muntjac.

Hi. For a number of years I have always spotted muntjac if I have been travelling to or from my parents house in Bedfordshire at night. When it is dark you can see them near the side of the road between Millbrook and Ridgmont.
There must be quite a few of them as I don't think I have ever done this journey without spotting them.

This time last year, I saw a lone Muntjac on an estate of dense firs. It is on an unclassified road between the west end of the Windyedge straight off the A9, a few miles west of Perth. This road eventually ends up after about 4 miles at Kinkell Bridge on the B8062, near Auchterarder. We had a staring contest before it casually wandered away into the thicket.

We have lots of Muntjac deer in Wendover, Bucks. We mainly see them up in the beech woods and surrounding courntryside but have also spotted them at the bottom of our garden. They can be heard barking on most nights.

I have seen 2 muntjacs near Fairford Gloustershire. They were on the edge of the woods by the road between Fairford and Marston Meysey. I have seen them a couple of times.

My daughter tells me that she regularly sees muntjac, when out riding locally, in the farmland between Southam, and Priors Marsden, Warwickshire.
They also amble across the road between these two locations, mostly at dusk.
She says she has also seen them the othere side of the town, between Southam and Bascote.
Now I know what they sound like i know what I have been hearing from time to time!

We have seen muntjacs in Oxford for many years now, but this year is different because we have two baby muntjacs (from different families) visiting our rather overgrown, large, but fairly central city garden.
They often come during the morning, not early, and are becoming much less shy.
Worth losing a bit of foliage, because they are such lovely animals.

I have lived in Gloucestershire now for 7 years and went to College at Hartpury in Gloucester, i now live in a a tiny village just outside Wotton - Under -Edge and i am always on te lookout for wildlife. For the past two years i always see Muntjac in Tortworth and other local areas where i also always see Roe Deer, i go walking very regularily, they are magnificant animals and i could watch them all day and night - i wish i didn't have a full time job!!!

I live in the village of Kidmore End in South Oxfordshire. We have apple trees in our front garden, on a daily basis during autumn we have muntjac visiting to eat the windfalls, very often they come in pairs. They are so bold, they stroll in through the front gate and happily get on with their meal. Last year when there was a huge crop of apples they used to arrive promptly at 13.00 for lunch but they can be seen at anytime of the day.
I felt for your reporter in Springwatch who spent hours early in the morning looking for them as I had seen them in my front garden that afternoon!

The muntjac on our farm - and neighbouring ones - are so common that we regularly see 3 or 4 when we are out in the fields. They are breeding well too. We are just outside Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire.

There are numerous Muntjac around the Wittering/ Thornhaugh area of Cambridgeshire.
One unfortunately ran out in front of my car and it demolished the front bumper but didn't live.
We have also seen them in the countryside outside Stratford upon Avon and also outside Cotgrave in Nottinghmshire.

I live in HARWICH in ESSEX and had a muntjac deer in my garden a few weeks ago. It had fallen into the garden from about 8 foot, my garden backs into a railway line with no back entrance. The back wall is 8ft but with only a 1 or 2 foot drop the other side which is how we think it got in! I also see them quite often along the local by pass near Ramsey and Parkeston.

We live in Letchworth, Hertfordshire and regularly have muntjac in the garden, they love the fallen apples at this time of year and geraniums in the summer. How long is the gestation period as we may be expecting the patter of tiny hooves. We have already had one baby, it was the size of a small dog and spotty.

Muntjac seem to be doing well around Henley On Thames, my own sightings include Marsh Meadows Henley, Lambridge Woods Henley, also Chinnor Hill in Oxfordshire. I have even run into one on a residential public path on the outskirts of the town. Sadly also sometimes dead on the side of the local roads..

While walking my dog in St Ives, Huntingdon yesturday, I saw a mutjack deer in the thicket. I am a dog walker and see many in Hemingford grey too. My sister lives in Hemingford and she said there is one that visits her garden and wakes the family up with it's bark.
I go beating in Cockayne Hatley Potton and Barley Royston and have seen them in the woods there, also Fallow and Roe deer too.

Here in Cambridgeshire, we have seen Munjacs in Connington Village, trotting across the road or peeping out of hedgerows, on the island at Houghton meadows (does this mean they can swim?), in the meadow at Houghton (our springer gave chase momentarily but had no chance) and on the Hemingford Grey side of the river. They are very small but agile!

I would strongly recommend a visit to the Ashridge Estate Hertfordshire/Buckinghamshire area.
The Ashridge Estate that surrounds this area is a 5,000-acre (20 km2) area of open countryside and woodland on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, with a rich variety of wildlife including fallow dear, muntjac and the renowned red kite. There is vast areas of mature woodlands with carpets of spring bluebells and fine autumnal displays.
The estate is run by the Natural Trust, who maintain a lovely organic sense of management of the estate. This has allowed wildlife to propser.
Muntjac are common site, and i see them every now and again either darting through my garden, stopping to nibble my plants in the summer and when i'm walking my dog in the woods.
It's very rare to see more than one at any time, i believe they live mainly on their own!
Once again have visit, to explore this hardly known of area, that derserves attention.

In April/May this year we saw muntjac deer, either one or sometimes two, in the fields near Trimpley Reservoir, Bewdley, Worcs. Last year they seemed to like eating the windfall perry pears on the farm, but ran off barking in alarm when I came upon them. I didn't think I was that scary!!
Other wildlife here includes hares, stoats, badgers, slow worms, adders, owls, bats, kestrel, and a lovely flock of goldfinches regularly feeding on knapweed seeds each autumn.

I work at Erlestoke Prison in Wiltshire. When I'm on nights we can hear the Muntjacs barking in the woods surrounding half the perimeter, that worries the prisoners, most of whom are townies who've never seen Deer of any species. We also see them on the cameras around the estate.

Hi there, I live in Bury not far from the town centre and next to a busy main road which leads into the Manchester City Centre, I haven't seen one of these deer but I have woken up at 3am in the morning and heard it. I didn't know what it was and have never heard anything like it and thought it sounded like some kind of dinosaur or alien!! after my mum told me about these being on the show I knew where it was !
There is a cemetery close by to where I live which is where it could have come from - I'll certainly be listening out for it again !

By coincidence I saw a Muntjac this week. I know they are often seen over the allottments at the bottom of the lane I live in the village of Pytchley, Kettering in Northants, and have seen a few in tha last year. I also saw one by the Rushden and Diamonds business centre in Irthlingborough about 2/3 months ago; I think they must come down from Stanwick Lakes which is just next door. I understand they are prevelant in the Rockingham Forest area in general... unfortunately I have seen dead ones on the verge of the A14 in the Kettering and A43 towards Corby/Rockinham over the last 6 years, but I guess this proves they are there.

We stay at a holiday cottage at the village Heydon in Norfolk, it's a lovely cottage in the middle of the woods, and every time we have been there we see the Muntjac and Roe Deer.
They are just so lovely and they come right up to the cottage, a wonderful sight!
In November last year while we were there we say our very lucky to see our very first Goldcrest feeding on seed right outside the kitchen window, they are so small.
This cottage is a magical place for bird and wildlife watchers.

In the past few years the population of Muntjac has really increased around my area of Suffolk - Minsmere down to Aldeburgh and inland for a couple of miles. I seem to see most in the springtime but footprints are present on most tracks most of the time.
Unfortunately they are quite a hazard if you have a fast dog off the leash - they run off with that white tail bobbing up and down saying come and get me!
Incidently are there 2 species ? - one looks a bit like a Wallaby the way it lollops along.
I would hazard a guess that each 1km square around here houses at least one of the beasties.

We farm just south of Blenheim Palace and have frequent visits from muntjac who also raid the allotments in Cassington village. They are often seen wandering along the road side grazing and are not worried by the traffic. They love wallflowers !

We see and hear Muntjacs frequently behind our house in Old Buckenham, in Breckland, Norfolk. There is a small wood (planted around 20 years ago) which they have moved into, from more established woodland and farmland around and about. Some of the gardens along the road are on the 'muntjac route' and are visited every day, at about the same time.

We have often seen Muntjacs Where I work as a Ranger at a 120 acre woodland near Moira Leicestershire in the Middle of the National Forest. I last saw the Muntjac on 29th October 2008 (yesterday).

Muntjac seen on Sunday close to the RSPB reserve in Sandy. It got to within 10 yards of us before it saw us and then studied us for a few momemts before fleeing close to the hedgerow.

We have regularly seen muntjac at our Static caravan site, Cliff House in Dunwich Suffolk. One in particular has been given the name of Bilbo he spends most of his day wandering around and is not really bothered by people. He like to forage under the bird feeders and knows where he is likely to find food put out by friendly residents

Hi all,
I have seen many Munkjak deer around Louth Lincolnshire. Apparently they are mainly in and around the area of Legbourne Woods (Nr Louth), but obviously go wondering around the parishes/villages of Legbourne,Carlton and Manby,
I was also on a bridle path, with my wife and 16 year old son, near a village of Saltfleetby (Nr Louth) last week and saw 6 deer crossing some ploughed fields. We could not identify the type of deer until we saw your program. The best fit we could find was Sika deer, the animals were dark in colour with white tails and rumps (no visible spots on the back). Could this be possible in the fields of North East Lincolnshire??

I took a photo of what I believe is a muntjac in Burnham Beeches in Buckinghamshire on 21st September, 2007. It is not a very good photo but it looks like a muntjac to me. I had a friend who lived in Stoke Poges who said that a muntjac came into her garden too.

I have often seen and heard a Muntjac on my early morning walk about 2 kms from my home.
I live at Guiting Power ---- GL54 5TY.
There is an old Wood and a newer Plantation on the hillside above Hawling Lodge and this is the area in question.
But I must say that they are quite common in this lovely part of the cotswolds.

I see muntjac, their signs and hear them around Hertfordshire especially in St.Albans where I live. I hear them all the time and occasionally see them in my local park which is 5mins away. They never seem to mind if your in their view they just carry on with their business but if you start getting close they slowly move off. I've also seen them in Ashridge forest as well as seeing fallow and roe deer there as well.

I regularly see Muntjac when walking around Charlton village near Banbury. They are quite bold and will stand and watch when I'm walking the dogs. Also regularly see them at night when I'm driving home from work.
About a month ago we saw 8 buzzards flying (playing?) together and 3 Red Kites together as well.
Also have 3 large badger setts around the village, occasionally see other deer possibly Roe but they're usually to far away!!!
Tawny and barn owls live round here as well. So I suppose we're quite lucky.
Best bit though was the Great Spotted Woodpecker visiting our garden for the peanuts in the summer. Spectacular.

We see muntjacs regularly near our house - near Rickmansworth - 5 mins from the M25. One morning we even found a muntjac skeleton on the front lawn - the head was almost intact but the rest was picked clean. It must have been dragged in by a fox.

We see at least one muntjac a week in our garden. They are quite relaxed and graze as they go. Unfortunately they have been known to graze on our broad beans and roses, and the grape hyacinth leaves are always newly chewed. We live on the edge of Charlburyin the Cotswolds.

I'm surprised by Duuzy harnser's herd of Muntjac north of Blythburgh. There are a lot of Muntjac around here:Dunwich forest and Heath, Westleton heath and Common and of course around Minsmere, but singles and occasional pairs if a buck is following a female. Duzzy is correct in that we have a lot of Red der around here too, over 200 in the herd that the RSPB are showing Rutting. (Soon to be culled by the number of high seats that have appeared around the sugar beet fields?). Perhaps a more likely explanation is a herd of Fallow deer as they do occur around the Henham estate and can often be seen from the road on the way to Blyford just after the A12 crosses the Blyth.

I saw a munjac at a cross roads between Coverack and St.Keverne three years ago, when I was cycling on a Saturday morning at about 6.30am, the munjac was crossing the road as I rounded the corner, the deer was startled then ran down the road towards an oncoming lorry, the driver stopped the lorry and the munjac turned and ran back to me for a while before stopping and jumping over a small hedge, then disappeard in to some woodland .

We have muntjaks living in the woods behind my house in Oulton Broad, Lowestoft, Suffolk. We have seen individuals in the garden on numerous occasions in the 20 years we have lived here.
I also see roadkill victims all too frequently, including this morning unfortunately, by the side of the A12 between Lowestoft and Wrenthham en route to work.

it was about a year ago this season that i saw a muntjac, at John Rays walk in Great notley braintree. The muntjac was eating the hazel nuts or crab apples or both, it was for the briefest second, until my dog disturbed it. i have also seen a minx swimming in the stream, and this is a breeding area for what i belive was tawny owls but i never was able to actually seem them as they were in the darkness off a barn. But this is a beatiful walk known to the natureist john ray.

However, 2 ran across the A4130 Northern Perimeter Road in front of my car at about 8pm on Tuesday the 28th October. I first heard about muntjac back in the 1960s from a farmer near Puckeridge, Herts - we used to live on that farm.

Seen and heard since mid eighties (personal experiences, initially as NT warden) at Bramshott Common (NT and MOD) and Ludshott Common (NT) in East Hants - (off A3 between Hindhead and Liphook).
Once came across a Muntjac making a very peculiar "singing" or "trilling" sound - I have never been able to find out what this behaviour was all about.

We saw a muntjac when leaving work this evening, at about 6.00 p.m., by the side of the road in a wooded, quite area in Crowthorne, Berkshire. We even reversed to get a better look at it .... we only recognised it as a muntjac from having seen the programme last night. It seemed quite content to be grazing and not at all phased by the car/lights.

We were on holiday in the New Forest in June this year and saw one in the forest near Burley. It came out of the trees just in front of us - probably about 30m away, and didn't seem that bothered about us. It walked slowly away sniffing the ground. I even managed to get a few photos, although most were a bit blurred! I'm glad you mentioned it on the show as I didn't know what it was until this week!

I live in the countryside in Knightwick, Worcestershire - we are surrounded by lots of thick woodland and the area is renowned for the little chinese deer, muntjacs. They seem to be shy animals but my partner has seen one trotting along one of the country roads at night - he kept trotting in front of the car until he found gap in the hedge and bounded off. My neighbour has had to muntjac-proof his alottment as they are very fond of his fruit and veg! We regularly hear the deer's sharp barking in the dead of night (we only found out the other night that this sound was the muntjac after watching Simon's report the other night - we originally assumed the strange sound was foxes). I can often hear crashing around in the woods at the back of the house, which I assume is a muntjac - I would love to see one of these creatures so I keep my fingers crossed!

As the Animal Warden for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham I was called to 3 incidents involving Muntjac deer.
A Muntjac was swimming in a man made lakein an urban park, unable to get out because of the steep sides - it was given a hand out and ran away unharmed.
Another Muntjac deer was found in the car park to an old peoples home in a very built up area - it was caught and transfered to a more rural spot.
The last Muntjac was found curled up injured in a corner of a park, sadly it died before help could be given. It was probably a road traffic casualty.

Around Feb/March this year I saw and heard one call at Phyllis Currie Nature Reserve (Essex Wildlife Trust), Dumney Lane, Great Leighs, CM3 1PE. OS Grid ref: TL723182. This is a lovely local reserve with two large ponds, a bird hide, lots of nest boxes and woodland. We have seen a kingfisher and dragonflies there and think we have seen badger tracks.

In February 2007 We enjoyed seeing quite tame muntjack deer browsing round the chalets in the woods at Centre Parcs Elveden Forest. At the time I wondered wether they would have been culled to keep the numbers down.

I see Muntjac fairly frequently. We live in South Oxfordshire and I managed to slow down my car to avoid one malingering at the side of the road last Friday night just outside the village of Cookley Green near Henley upon Thames. We live in chesham and regually have muntjac in our garden, the most we've seen at one time is 4.
They browse on several of our bushes in particular the magnolia.
We have even found a dead one n the garden.

I have a resident muntjac who I see almost daily and have been able to see quite close up, we leave food out for her, she is partual to peanuts, carrots and plum leaves, she provides us with a new youngster to watch every year. She must have been resident now for about 12-13yrs, so would be interested in the expected life span of a muntjac. About three weeks ago the little one departed and she started calling for a mate again, she has been quiet since so hopefully we can assume we will see another little one in the summer again at our Small holding near Wisbech Cambridgeshire

We regularly see Muntjacs near East Dereham in central Norfolk.
We live in the countryside next to a wet woodland and often see them on our field. At dawn and dusk they will venture close by the house and can be a nuisance eating precious plants in our gardens.

You talk about Muntjacs but there are in fact two species. They were both introduced to Woburn in the late 19th century and there have been many escapes. The two species are The Chinese Muntjac and the Indian Muntjac. Do you know if the Indian species has thrived as well as the Chinese species?

We have Muntjac on the Malvern Hills. I regularly hear them barking but have only once seen one. I see Roe deer in the same areas much more often. The first wild Muntjac I ever saw was in 1973, between the North Worcestershire town of Bromsgraove and the outskirts of Birmingham near a village called Blackwell.

Until I saw Simon's piece the other night I thought that I had seen a large Muntjac on the edge of Stanmore Common (Middx), but now realise that it was a buck Roe deer. It had quite a pronounced tuft of hair on its chin, rather like a goat but not as long. Is this normal?

We have Muntjac who visit our garden, mainly in winter. We live in Saffron Walden and the most we have seen at one time is three. While living at Lane End Buckinghamshire there were a great many muntjac living locally. They could be a bit of a problem at times when they were forever invading and foraging in gardens. They were also a hazard on the local roads as they were very prone to comming out at night infront of traffic, I speaak from personal experience! Their road sense was non existent and unfortunately a fair number became road accident victims! I now live back on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent which is and most probably will remain muntjac free!

Have plenty of Muntjac here by the river Cherwell ,in Marston,Oxford. See two family groups most days on the garden down to the river. This week also saw for the first time a group of red deer ,who jumped into the river and swam to the other side when we disturbed them.

Muntjac abound in the Woodwalton Fen nature reserve near Ramsey in Cambridgeshire, along with Chinese Water deer. I frequently see Muntjac near my house between Chatteris and Manea, also in Cambridgeshire, and they have been in the garden on several occasions.
Although they will graze within inches of the roadside and seem oblivious to the traffic speeding by it's quite a different matter if they see someone on foot, when they will melt away into the nearest cover within seconds - not an easy thing to do in the midst of the vast East Anglian agri-desert!

Gorseviewer, you were wondering about the herd of Muntjacs I saw just north of Blythburgh, Suffolk. Maybe herd was an inappropriate description. I guess it was probably about six or seven animals thinking about it. Certainly not like the large herds of Red Deer you can sometimes see roaming in Suffolk.
They were definitely Muntjacs as well, no question about it. Fallow Deer are far larger and there's absolutely no way I would have mistaken them. It was just west of the Henham estate on the road to Beccles. Sorry for the confusion, it was my fault for using the word herd.

In King's Lynn in the past two months my wife and I have spotted Muntjac up close on a local common.At the rear of our house backing onto woods we heard one but didn't know what it was until watching Autumnwatch,so thanks,you cleared up a mystery.

I regularly see Muntjac or hoof prints of then when walking my dog around North Norfolk. One summer about 10 years ago I was treated to the sight of a female coming out of a wheatfield promptly followed by her fawn. Far from being shy the female took a long look at me before proceeding on her way across the narrow road and into the next wheatfield where they dissapeared almost immediately, the wheat being taller than the adult deer.
They are widespread in this area.

I regularly see 4 deer running in the fields around Scotton, near Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire. Usually very early in the motning. I think they are Muntjack, but they run so fast I can't be sure.

My husband works for the local council in North Lincolnshire, and part of his out of hours duties is to clear roadkill that poses a hazard to other road users (not pleasant at all). He's almost certain that he's had to remove a muntjack earlier this week, as it was too small to be anything else at this time of year.

I have seen a muntjac in my home town of Andover, in Hampshire.
If you are not familiar with Andover, it is a medium to large town, but is surrounded by lightly wooded open countryside. We have a lot of deer in the surrounding countryside, being on the very eastern extremity of Salisbury Plain, and not too far north of the New Forest.
I encountered the muntjac on my way to work early one morning, around 7.30 am, crossing the road in front of me, between the playing fields of Harrow Way School, and Charlton Lakes. From that location, the nearest open field is no more than 100 yards away.

Whilst out walking in the woods near our home in Bockmer End, Marlow, Bucks, we were surprised to find a baby Muntjac asleep under a tree. Our Border Collie just stared at it. The youngser looked fit and healthy and started calling it`s mum, so we moved away quickly. We could not believe the noise such a tiny little chap could make! It was the most wonderful experience!
I expect that baby Muntjac now eats our flowers!
We also have a herd of about 50 Fallow deer that come out of the woods and graze in the field behind our house. They have become a lot more used to the sound of humans, lawn mowers, chainsaws, etc since we moved in four years ago!!!!

We live in a small rural village near Skegness. I was looking out of my kitchen window about eighteen months ago when I got a glimpse of two animals which for a moment I thought were pigs. Knowing this was highly unlikely I went out to investigate. It was a pair on Muntjac. We have had numerous sightings since then, but not recently.

Hi. After watching Wednesday's show and listening to the deer calls I realised that the cute little deer I see in a field along the lane were I live is actually a very noisy little thing. Both myself and a few of my neighbours were awoken on Sunday in the middle of the night by what we thought were foxes, but after hearing the different deer calls knew it was from a Muntjac.
I often see it , at least twice a week , along a very quiet access lane to where I live an a fairly small village called Hermitage in West Berkshire. Will continue to be on the look out!

My family and I have just returned from a week at Centre Parcs Elveden Forest, Suffolk. When we arrived we couldn't believe that a muntjac deer was right outisde our villa, it was so close that we could nearly touch it. Within the next few days of our holiday we saw what I think might have been a complete family, they were absolutely beautiful to watch, they were not put off by the fact that we were watching them and they ate everything there was to eat on the ground ( including bread, nuts that we were giving to the birds and aquirrels) What a lovely experience especially for our 4 year old daughter who wanted the deer to feed from her hand, it nearly did !!!!

We live in Overstrand on the coast in North Norfolk. The area around us is heavily wooded, and muntjacs on the side of the road, and in the woods are common sights.
They also frequently visit gardens, usually at night or before folk aren up and about.

Bishops Stortford, Herts... I've seen Muntjacs within the town park at Sworders field, and at various locations around the town. Illusive they may be, but one sure sign of their presence is 'unfortunately' road kill.

When out walking with George my Cocker Spaniel, a muntjac suddenly shot out from a hedgerow about six feet in front of us. This was in the Brinklow area in Warwickshire

I saw three together at dawn last week at Cottenham park, Cottenham near Cambridge.
This is a Parkhome site which has won a David Bellamy Gold award in 2007 & 2008.
I also took some photo's at the time which came out quite well [considering the light] but I can't seem to post here. Would you believe one walked past me yesterday at lunch time not 15 meters away when I was talking to a friend but i did not have my camera with me.

I live in Gloucestershire, Nailsworth, and on Tinkley Lane, there is a lovely place called Thistledown. It's a really nice area where alot of wildlife live. There are wide open areas that leads to loads of beautiful trees and shrubs. Perfect for any animals. I have had two encounters with Muntjack Deer, both at Thistledown. One was when I was walking along with my friend, looking for wildlife, being as quiet as we could, when out of the bushes, a Muntjack buck leapt out in front of us and just stood there. We were thrilled!!! I couldn't believe my eyes!!!!
The next time was when I was going on a night walk about three weeks ago. We went around the place with about five more people. We were all silent because we heard rustling. And there was a rather small, proberly this years fawn,Muntjack Deer in the shrubs.As soon as it saw us it slowly walked away. It didn't seem that scared though. Bristlenosegirl.

There are (at least) two Muntjacs in meadows and woods around Old Ferry Drive, Wraysbury, TW19. I have seen them a couple of times and often hear them.

We live in Henley on Thames and have regular visits from muntjac. Much as we love them they ate all the tulips this Spring !
Usually only see one at a time.
In August the muntjac ate the gladioli - just the flowers !

We spent a couple of year living in both Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire and saw loads of Muntjac virtually everywhere. The hot spots were Turville (otherwise known as Dibley), Hambleden valley towards Henley on Thames, the Stonor valley nr Henley, Bledlow nr High Wycombe and even along the M40 right by the road.

Having recently posted sighting of muntjac on message boards,I was reminded of when I first heard of these.There was a Norfolk naturalist,Ted Ellis,who I spoke to several times,and what a lovely man he was.He died about 20 years ago.He told me they were about long before then,but called them Chinese Water Deer.
I would like to post a tribute to his memory.

My sister and her family gets a group of four Muntjac deer in her garden virtually every day.
She lives in Bridgham near Thetford and has a woods and the River Thet running at the bottom of her land giving them ideal surroundings. The Muntjac are becoming more familiar with the occupants and have even, albeit, very timidly approached the house.
My sister is fortunate to have a garden large enough (2.2acres) for them to use the garden without actually disturbing the deer.

Driving along the Whittlesford Road from Little Shelford towards Whittlesford in Cambridgeshire at 06:40 on 30/10/2OO8 a lone muntjac ambled across the road less than 100 yards in front of my car and disappeared into the hedge surround a field next to the road.
As he didn't take fright of the car I guess he was an experience road user. That or he has been speaking to his mate Tufty!

Whilst muntjac are very common in Bedfordshire it's still a delight to see them. I watched two this morning at 7-30 am just behind the top of my garden which backs on to Totternhoe Knolls. You can see them much more in the winter when the leaves are off the trees. If I am really lucky I can also see foxes, a black squirell and we also have a badgers' set nearby.

Hi Simon, We live in Suffolk near Woodbridge and have had muntjac living with us there in our small woods for the last 9-10 yrs or more. They breed there and we often see the Mother with her young (we've seen about 4 babies so far) and I believe they are quite prolific, having something like a 6 month gestation period before conceiving again? I have read they are almost always pregnant!
We hear them barking during the night throughout the year, not just in the mating season, setting our dogs off. They have great fun talking to each other!
We have found two muntjac dead on the roads bordering our land, and one on our land which had been eaten, presumably by a fox. We assumed it had died of natural causes.
We manage our land for wildlife and we are now classified as a Small Nature Reserve by The Suffolk Wildlife Trust.
At present we have a Mother and young calf who watch us when we come home at night from under their tree - we catch their eyes in our headlights and it's a welcome sight.

We were so excited to see our first Muntjac locally just two weeks ago. We were biking home on a path that crosses an old railway line that used to take coal to the old Hams Hall Power Station near to Coleshill, North Warwickshire. This has now been converted to an industrial park. The surrounding area is scrubland with a river running through it. The sighting was just at the edge of the industrial park.
My collegue has also seen Munjac at Elford in Lichfield at a quarry.

We have had munjac for about 19 years or maybe more in Felbridge on the Surrey/West Sussex border. We found out what they were all those years ago by contacting the natural history museum as we'd never heard of the creatures! Their distinctive slow bark echos around eerily especailly on a frosty night!

Driving through Bentley Heath, a village on outskirts of Solihull , around 6.00pm last night when we saw a Muntjac attempt across the road. It soon changed its mind when faced with the headlights of an on-coming car. It safely shot back into the undergrowth. Has anyone else in and around Solihull seen Muntjacs?

I have had two sightings of a female Muntjac deer on the driveway of a farm in Countesthorpe, Leicester. It is interesting that Simon mentioned the Muntjac moving to more built up area's as the farm is situated between a golf course and a college so there are always people around.

We live very near to the Wyre Forest in Worcestershire. I see Muntjac prints and sometimes groups of them whilst walking my dogs in the forest and surrounding woodland areas.
We often see a single male cross the field our home in broad daylight - 3 weeks ago 2 adults and a baby appeared in the same field!
Their calls at night are quite common-place.
Last week near Taplow Station,Bucks - a Muntjac crossed the road in front of my car in the middle of the day!

Hi, I live in Winchmore Hill North London situated between the M25 and the North Circ.
I often see two Muntac deer strolling through your communial back garden amongst the Horse-chestnut/ Oak trees.
I have a feeling they are making their way to the New River that runs along the boarder of our garden.

I live near the blogger in Stanton, Suffolk and I have a family of three Muntjac in my garden. I am quite fond of them but I have just started a huge job of re-envigorating the woodland garden and planting thousands of bulbs and young shrubs. The comment on the programme earlier in the week that Muntjac are partly responsible for the destruction on most of our bluebell woods particularly disturbed me. Is tehre any point in carrying on with my plans. I dont want to be providing an 'all you can eat buffet' for the Muntjacs.

We quite often see them come out from nearby woods into a field.
We also have kites which are wonderful to watch.
The muntjacs seem to like living near churchyards so they can gobble up the flower heads!

We have muntjac dotted about in North Wilts, in the old parts of Braydon Forest. They can be seen individually and in small groups. There are als the more usual types of deer to be found in these areas. Also some sightings of Red Kite.

We have a Muntjac deer which visits our back garden in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. He comes through the gap in the gate from the fields behind and particularly likes eating my camelia! It's very shy and as soon as it sees us watching will disappear again.

I encountered my first muntjac deer about 5 years ago whilst out riding my horse who then was only 4 and currently being broken in. I was out with a friend on her horse in a field next to the stableyard (in Dingley, Market Harborough, Leics) when 3 of them popped out from the undergrowth and stood about 10 feet away from us. My young horse was so intrigued by them he froze to the ground ears pricked and even after they had gone it took me 20 mins to get him moving again!!

In the Marlow and Cookham Dean areas there are good numbers of Muntjac and Roe deer. We have the odd Fallow and Red deer too from time to time.
I have managed to photograph Muntjac and Fallow but not the red or roe.
Locally there is a famous landmark deer that only turns up during winter and stay with a herd of cows...........
I used to cycle from Windosor to Amersham to get to work each day and on the way home Muntjac would graze the grass verges by the road.. The first time I noticed one I nearly fell off my bike....

I have lived in Caithness in the far north of scotland for over 26 years and have had 3 sightings of Muntjac deer.
The first was in 1987near Berriedale,the second in approx1999 near Halkirk and the third sighting was in 2006 near Lairg in Sutherland.

I live in Witnesham, a village just outside of Ipswich. We regularly see Muntjacs deer coming in our garden. One time we even saw a female with a baby. Once or twice i have heard them barking. I enjoy watching them and think they are really interesing and they are very timid and runaway if they see you. We have lived in this house for 12 years and have only started seeing them in about the last 2.

I live in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire and early this Spring went to Rutland Water, which is about 15 minutes drive away, to listen to the dawn chorus. As we were leaving we saw a muntjac deer grazing on the grass verge - this was about 05.30 am.

I used to live in Banbury (oxfordshire) and i used to feed the foxes in my front garden, very often a muntjac and her faun would come and pinch some of the food, mainly cut up apple. at night i would hear the fox and muntjac fighting, sounded like a mass killing going on but she was just protecting her baby. haven't seen muntjac anywhere else though.

I have recently been at Silverburn Shopping Centre Glasgow and on two occasions have spotted Sika deer on both sides of the M77 grazing happily as the traffic is whizzing past keep your eyes open you just never know what you might see!

I live in Norwich and My Parents live in the small town of Stalham they regularly have up to 6 muntjacs visit their garden and surrounding farmland
Whilst on holiday at centreparcs in thetford I was able to hand feed a munjac that approched our family when we were having lunch, one of the wardens there told me that they had such a large population that they were likely to become a problem by damaging the habitat.

Muntjac deer are all year round visitors to our garden in St Ives, Cambridgeshire - most recently a doe with kid nibbling everything they fancy as usual, as well as scooping up the spillings from the bird seed and peanut holders. Yesterday afternoon the doe came into the garden alone and spotted me staring from the window. She didn't run but challenged me by edging towards the house stomping alternately with her front legs and moving her ears independently at amazing angles. She then very slowly went into 'reverse' gear, not at all scared, turned and wandered back through the hedge. We often hear them 'barking' at night from the

I have seen and photographed a muntjac whilst fishing at Kilcot Valley Farm Fishery (on the border of glos and south glos) It was unmistakable feeding amongst the schrubs and bushes. It suddenly bounded across the hillside persued by a large grey dog which luckily stopped when called by its owner!

We have several Muntjac deer who have been coming to our garden in Rickmansworth Herts for 4 or 5 years. Some of them, especially one particular female, seem to live in the thick bushes down one side of the back garden. One even had a faun there. Unfortunately, we believe the fox got it early one morning. We heard the female barking. This morning there were three in the garden grazing. A fox came in, and the deer stood their ground. Later one of the females chased the fox. Then two of them lay down partly in the bushes partly in the sun chewing the cud.
They come right up to the house - we have had to fence off the geraniums after they took the flowers off.
They come in from the woods behind our garden. The railway and the M25 run through the woods. Do you want a photo?
They don't seem to be shy at all - if we move quietly they will stay in the garden as long as we don't go too close.

One more curious bit of behaviour.
In the summer, we noticed a pair of magpies following one of the Muntjac deer round the garden. Then one of the magpies landed on its back, and the deer stood absolutely still for several minutes while the magpie pecked at its back. The magpie got down, the deer moved, then the process was repeated. We assume this was the magpie searching for tics or insects and the deer knew it was beneficial

I frequently hear muntjacs barking at night from my garden and occasionally see them in a small wood nearby. Best sighting was 4 all very close together in the summer - all adults.

I cycle daily between Wyton village & Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Muntjac are very common in the area of reed beds here. They are also common road kills, have seen 6 dead in the past year in a 1 mile stretch of road. Their diet seems to be roots off the reed plants. They have no road sense as they dash out at great speed much to the surprise of unsuspecting drivers in this area.

We regularly see muntjac around Trench Wood and the nearby hamlet of Sale Green in Worcestershire, especially at dusk or early morning. They are quite unfazed by the traffic and will continue grazing as you drive by. They seem to be with a herd of roe deer which I have seen around the village of Crowle also.

I have seen Muntjac twice in our garden over the last two weeks and several times during the last two or three years on open common land near to us .We live next to woodland near Stroud, Gloucestershire.

I live in Barrow in Suffolk and we see Muntjac all the time and throughout the year in and around this area of Suffolk. They are very common here and although we love to see them, they can be extremely dangerous to moving traffic.

I have seen two Muntjac in Longleat woods between Heavens gate car Park and the lake at Shear Water on a Sunday morning next to a fairly busy pathway. We disturbed them as we rode past on horseback. At first I thought they were dogs - but they were undoubtedly deer once they started the leap at speed !!

I saw a muntjac at Rhinefield in the New Forest last week, and in the spring there were 2 in a field in Cranborne Chase, about a mile north of Cranborne, Dorset.

We frequently encounter Muntjac around Malmesbury/Chippenham. I can't recall hearing them bark and our dogs have yet to flush one from cover so they do a good job of lying low.

We have at least 2 muntjaks in my village Coulston near Westbury. They are like little pigs and I always thought the barking in the night was a fox, was I wrong? and its these little deer. Anyone know?

We live very close Claydon,Suffolk in Barham.
We have plenty of Muntjak deer in our garden also badger's and all type's of birds.We have been visited by the deer day and nightime all year long. I can sit in our living room looking out the patio door and no further then 4 meters away watch all forms of wildlife. We have watched a family of Muntjak grow as we have between 4-6 on a regular basis.

Norton Common in Letchworth is 'alive' with Muntjacs, along with our black squirrels! I see Muntjacs every day when out with the dogs, and on one morning counted 14 in the space of less than an hour.

We have a buck muntjac that comes into our garden on a regular basis. We live in Hadley Wood, Barnet. Do they go in herds etc, we have never seen another.

Muntjacs are commonly sighted moving along the Oxford - Bicester railway line in north Oxford, and I have seen mother and fawn pairings on many occasions, and a train fatality once.
Here they used to have easy access to the large suburban gardens. However, National Rail have recently installed industrial railings along the cutting, and this has resulted in a reduction of sightings.
Wytham Woods (north west Oxford) also has Muntjac, among other deer, which threaten the natural regeneration of the wood. Carefully monitored exclusion zones demonstrate the startling amount of damage to the ground flora that these herbivores can commit. Above a certain population density of deer, in fact, it is quite impossible for a wood to regenerate at all, and eventually the woodland will die.

I live in a block of flats in South West Hertfordshire. In August I saw a pair of Muntjacs in the communal grounds by the trees. I was so pleased to see them.

A mother and fawn (or is that kid?) were seen three times during one week both at the far side of the field at the bottom of our garden and against our garden fence. They moved slowly and quietly along the hedge, disappering as quickly as they came. My husband described them as wallabies due to their 'back view' as they bounded across a fallen tree!

Muntjak are common in East Hertfordshire. My old black lab was fascinated many years ago by a doe and her fawn, well hidden in the undergrowth alongside the grass footpath which leads from our house into woodland. She seemed amazingly unperturnbed! They are a common sight, leaping across the roads at dusk - as is the occasional roe deer. Hugogillibean.

We have several Muntjac here in the sand dunes on the Lincolnshire coast at Mablethorpe.
We sometimes see them from our conservatory and I have photographed them.

While on holiday in Norfolk last week I saw a Muntjac in the woods that adjoin Holkham Beach. I mentioned it to a guy who was taking photos of birds and he confirmed that there are some in those woods - I also watched a gang of stoats playing on a grassy hillock in the same wood - riveting.

There are many Muntjacs to be seen the NT managed Hatfield Forest in Essex
A Muntjac can regularly be seen grazing on the bank side of the rounabout beneath the A10 on the A414 slip road towards Harlow Essex
And last but not least Muntjac sightings are seen on a regular basis in fields in Sawbridgeworth Herts post code CM21 (Beckinham Palace country)

We have a population of Muntjacs on the bath road covered reservoir in Reading. It's a small green area in the centre of town. I always wondered how they got there, simons explanation of them using the railway lines fits perfectly, it's right next to the train tacks.

we have a stables in barnet with 100 acres and often see muntjac in the fields and even along the road at night . Everyone sees them even the children which is lovely >they are not bothered and are used to the horses so sometimes you can get quite close.

I saw a mutjac in Peterborough trotting along beside the railway line near Crown Park,Yaxley; which supports the theory of how they travel.
I have also seen them fairly often in the local woods, and sadly quite frequently run-over on the roads.
They have certainly been in this area for at least 15 years, and probably more.

We have muntjac deer on Hazeley Heath, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire which borders our garden. We had problems with them eating our flowers, particularly Spring bulbs, until we installed a deer proof fence. They have been seen running down our road early in the morning, eating neighbours roses etc.

We live in Gorleston near Great Yarmouth and have seen Male Muntjac walking along streets at night. Unfortunately, the other time we see them is as casualties by the road side, five in this area over the past year.

We live on the norfolk / Suffolk borders in the village of Alburgh. We often see muntjac when we are out walking, especially at dusk. They seem very tame and never nervous when we pass. Most nights we hear their familiar barking calls.
