My son has been lobbying me hard to buy one of those posh, expensive George Clooney-type coffee machines. But why, I say? I don’t like coffee that much – nor does he… It’s just that it’s become one of those must-have consumer items that you feel ought to be sitting on your kitchen counter top, under the cupboard with the jar of instant coffee granules that you really use…

Much better to go retro – as apparently is the growing trend. We are told that this Christmas is the return of the Hostess Trolley (my sister has just bought one for Christmas lunch) and the Teasmaid. Now that’s more like it. I have always, always wanted a Teasmaid. During my childhood, it was always the must-have item that later became, when I could afford one, a much-scorned object of derision.

But now it’s enjoying a resurgence (although the famous Goblin is no longer around), I reckon the time is right. Loose tea or teabags?
