Classic British Grands Prix
This year's British Grand Prix will be a bitter-sweet occasion for many both inside and outside Formula 1.
Assuming everything goes to plan with the projected move to Donington Park , this will be the last time contemporary F1 cars race in anger around this great, historic circuit for at least a decade.
And even if Donington fail to get their race off the ground, there appears no way back for Silverstone - F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has made it clear that Britain will lose its grand prix before he takes it back to the Northamptonshire track.
So this seems an apposite time to celebrate the rich history of the British grand prix at Silverstone with the latest edition of our classic grands prix series.
Clearly, it was not the easiest decision to pick only five races to highlight.
As it happens, our choice was limited to some extent by the patchiness of the archive once you start to seriously wind the clock back.
That ruled out three of my initial picks - 1969 featuring a stunning race-long battle between Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt; 1973 and the famous pile-up triggered by Jody Scheckter losing control out of Woodcote; and 1977, when James Hunt and John Watson made it an all-British battle for the lead for a while.
No matter, we have five great choices for you to debate.
We start in 1981, when Watson triggered the first of the track invasions that were later to become familiar in the years of Nigel Mansell's success with his victory on a glorious summer afternoon.
That win, handed to the Northern Irishman when Rene Arnoux's Renault retired, was the start of an era in another way - it was the maiden victory for the McLaren team under the then-new ownership of Ron Dennis, as well as the first win for a car made of carbon-fibre.
After that, there is 1987, Mansell's first win at Silverstone - and what a win it was. Delayed by a mid-race tyre change, the Englishman mercilessly hunted down Williams-Honda team-mate Nelson Piquet before passing him with a stunning manoeuvre into Stowe with two laps to go.

Our next choice is 1998, when Michael Schumacher took one of many controversial victories for Ferrari.
At the end of a soaking wet race, in which he and McLaren's Mika Hakkinen had staged a superb fight, the German actually crossed the line in the pit lane, into which he had come to serve a stop-go penalty for overtaking while yellow warning flags were being waved - which meant he had not actually served the penalty at all.
Finally, there are two races from this decade - 2003 and 2008 .
The first will go down as one of the greatest races ever - Rubens Barrichello, then at Ferrari, won in brilliant style a race that was turned on its head when a priest invaded the track, prompting the intervention of the safety car.
That led to the uncompetitive Toyotas running one-two at one stage, with Cristiano da Matta (remember him?) at the head of the field, before Barrichello - driving the race of his life - moved inexorably to the front.
Finally, we had to include Lewis Hamilton's stunning performance last year, which will go down as one of the great wet-weather drives in F1 history.
The Englishman made his rivals look second-rate as he won by more than a minute, lapping at times five seconds a lap fastest than anyone else - the sort of performance that puts him in the same bracket as the likes of Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.
With such a fabulous choice, picking the best will not be easy - so why not give us a hand by telling us which one you would choose as your pick of the greatest of Silverstone's great moments?
The love affair has blown hot and cold, but Formula One has had me in its spell for most of my life. Tough choice indeed. I'd like 1981, with 2003 second.
What happens with the extended highlights this round? Obviously 1998, 2003, and 2008 are 5 minute limited. Does that mean, if two highlights are shown like before, that it will be 1981 and 1987 for sure?

1998 was a rather crazy race, so I'd go for that. 1987 2nd choice, 1981 3rd choice. They're all rather good, and I look forward to watching them!

It has to be 1987... hands down! Nigel Mansell with his "people-powered" Williams-Honda. Rubens Barichello display of overtaking in 2003 was amazing, but Nigel Mansell's move in '87 was breath-taking and probably one of the top 5 over-taking moves in the history of Formula 1.

Why isn't 1991 on there? Great drive by Mansell, great win, and one of the greatest moments in motorsport history at the end when he gave Senna a lift back to the pits?
But I suppose from the selection, I would pick 2003, if only for the crazy priest.

1987 has to get my vote for that epic Mansell charge and the breathtaking dummy he sold great rival Piquet on the Hangar straight into Stowe. His fuel read out was telling him he had no fuel left with 2 laps to go! Second place for me would be 1981 as it was a win for John Watson a very personable and unsung British racing hero. Bit disappointed that there is no footage of 1976 with the starting grid shunt and near riot when Hunt 'the Shunt' was almost not allowed to take the restart. Going back even further 1968 was by all accounts another classic with Jo Siffert holding off the perenially unluck Chris Amon for the last win for Rob Walker's privateer Lotus. It would have been good to have seen 1995 for the Hill/Schumacher tussle and popular win for Johnny Herbert or 1988 for Mansell's sublime drive in the wet. Maybe next year...

I'll go for 1987. It would have been 2003 as it was the best race in my opinion (and I was lucky enough to attend it) but for the sake of extended highlights it's 1987. Surprised 1995 isn't there though

For me it has to be either 2003 for the thrilling race or 2008 for a stunning drive by lewis, nobody was remotely close to him on that day.
I'm gonna miss silverstone, perhaps our only chance of ever seeing a race there again is if FOTA make a breakaway series?

It has to be 1987. I was 12 years old, sitting in the grandstand at Stowe with some Brazilians mocking us after NM's pitstop. My dad had me timing the difference between NP and NM each lap on my new fangled digital watch. Each lap the people around me were asking for the time difference, and each lap the crowd grew louder and louder, except for 2 Brazilian who went very quiet and were heavily mocked when NM threw NP the best fake seen in sports. Absolute classic, remember it link it was yesterday.

I am disapointed that the lack of coverage in the archive rules out the older races especially 1973. I was looking forward to Raymond Baxter's great commentry as Jackie Stewart went ploughing through the corn field at Stowe - "Now he's really in the agricultural business."
I think the outcome of this poll may be decided on the strength of the nostalgia vote with people keen to see an old edition of the BBC's Grand prix programme as opposed to more recent races that were covered by ITV.
If I am voting for a classic grand prix, then I would put 2003 at the top of the list with a brilliant victory for Rubens Barrichello. 1987 and 2008 would be a close joint second choice. I am a not a Lewis fanatic, but I think that Silverstone last year was his greatest F1 victory so far. From 1987, Mansell's chase and pass of Piquet is the drive of a legend. As both of these races featured stunning drives by Brits in Britain then they obviously feature well in my memory. I do not remember the 1981 race and so would not mind seeing it. The 1998 race would get last place in my vote.
McLarendan #13 - 1991 was a pretty uneventful race. Hardly a classic but I agree it's an iconic image with Senna perched on the airbox of Mansell's Williams on the drive from Club corner.
I would agree with F1-ADDICT #16 that 1995 would be good to see again.

Decent choices in the end Andrew.
However other contenders could have been:
Brand Hatch 1982, when Derek Warwick stormed to the front in the (unknown at the time) fuel light Toleman, overtaking the then current points leader Didier Pironi's Ferrari to the delight of the crowd.
Silverstone 1988, for Mansell's storming drive through to 2nd in the pouring rain.
And how about Silverstone 2005, mainly for Juan Pablo Montoya's outrageous move around the outside of Fernando Alonso at Copse on the first lap? An awesome move which symbollised the much missed Colombian's talent and racecraft

Sadly you forget the 1986 race which gets my vote - Mansell's first British GP win and a race full of drama; Jacques Laffite broke both legs during a multi car pile up at the start, leading to his retirement (and if I recall rightly his last race). The pile up included a significant number of cars which blocked the track entirely. The race was stopped without any drivers completing a single lap. This was fortunate for Mansell who had a driveshaft failure at the first start, but was allowed to restart as there had not been a lap completed. Mansell then went on to have a massive duel with Piquet, never more than 2 seconds apart, with a missed gear change by Piquet the only mistake by either in the race, which allowed Mansell through and he went on to win. Also the last British GP at Brands Hatch.

the ones i would like to see for the 2 extended highlight race are 1987 and 2008 1987 was before i was born with what people say it was amazing and 2008 was amazing how hamilton was seconds quicker than anyone and it was funny to see massa attempts at ballet in an f1 car with all his piroeuttes

The only 2 races we can see in full length highlights form are 1981 and 1987.
1987 I grant you is an absolute classic, and is an excellent choice.
But 1981 is nothing near the standard of 1986, 1991 and 1995. Perhaps even 1993 has a better claim to being here with the epic Senna vs Prost battle.
Despite this, I vote for 1981 and 1987, since they are the only two full length highlights options. I urge others to do the same, at best you won't get more than 5 minutes for 2003 Britain and that won't do justice to that brilliant race.

In terms of the pure excitement of F1, it's hard to look beyond 1987. My dad was at Stowe on lap 59, and he told me something interesting - it wasn't the quality of Mansell's pass on Piquet that was really amazing, but rather the way that Piquet squeezed Mansell at the apex of the corner - literally inches in it!
Anyway, beyond '87, I'd quite like to see 2008, for a drive of complete and utter dominance from Hamilton. However, if I had a vote on one of the modern ones, I'd actually go for 2007, for Hamilton's totally stunning pole-setting lap - when he crossed the line (I was at Copse), it was like the winning goal had been scored at the cup final - everyone went completely mental!

I agree with you gonzomontoya - 1988 was a brilliant race and holds special memories for me as it was the first GP I ever went to with my dad.
But out of the choices I'd have to say 1987, what a classic. Although I was also at the 2008 GP and that also was very special and actually was a better race imo than 1987. But even so, our Nige putting one sensational move on Piquet with 2 laps to go, after a fightback from 30+ secs back, what more could you want?!

With 1998, 2003 and 2008 being from the ITV years we won't get full highlights and it'd be a shame to lose the full highlights from either 1981 or 1987!

I disagree with those saying 1986, 1991, and 1995 should have been picked. 1981 was an interesting race in a very competitive season.
1986 - is the same story as 1987. Makes little sense to see two Mansell vs Piquet battles.
1991 - there's nothing significant in my view about this race other than Mansell giving Senna a lift, which BBC already covered in their "30 Years Of F1" promo before the season.
1995 - Not bad but I didn't think F1 was so competitive in 1995 to give the race an exciting context. It was one-man domination. The awkward in-between era from Senna-Prost-Mansell and Alonso-Kimi-Schumacher, where Williams were driver limited and especially in 95 I think Benetton Renault was the fastest race-fuel package.
Just a point about 1987. Would you say that Mansell's win in the end was due to strategy as well as good driving? I know Mansell had to come in to replace a wheel weight that had come loose or something, but I would have thought a stop for tyres would have been a far better option. Taking nothing away from Mansell, I think he was the best driver in comparison to pure ability to Ayrton Senna in that era.

I CANNOT BELIEVE IT! I feel you have let us down a bit here i'm sorry to say. I was expecting to see at least one race from 1991-1995 at least from Silverstone.
You have missed 1991 where Mansell gave Senna a lift back to the pits on his sidepod - what an iconic moment.
What about 1992 and a superb dominant drive by Mansell that ended in a huge track invasion?
The classic 1993 race that saw a titanic scrap between Prost and Senna with Hill's dramatic retirement?
In 1994 Hill won after Schumacher passed him on the parade lap - this is a very important race in F1 history.
How could you miss 1995 with the rain, Hill and Schumacher crashing together, Coulthard missing the win and Johnny Herbert bagging his first victory for Benetton?
I cannot believe none of these races are an option in favour of races from this decade that we have all seen fairly recently. I am pretty gutted at this i have to say - by far the worst selection thus far from a veritable feast of possible options the BBC has in it's archives. Sorry to seem critical as usually your selections are very good but i really am pretty gutted about this i was looking forward to some great classic viewing on GP weekend which is now not going to happen as i bet hardly anyone votes for 1981, the only rare classic race in this selection.

2003, just from 1981. Some of the moves Rubens made were absolutely amazing, passing cars round the outside on some bends if I remember correctly. It was the best Gp I had watched in a very very long time.

I understand that people want to see some other parts of the archive. And certain choices I'm sure do matter more to some than others. As has been mentioned before though:
1) BBC will run this segment next year it seems.
2) ITV gave us nothing from their archive. As for a customary ITV parting shot, I've appreciated that even with a dominant British driver this year, I think the coverage is head and shoulders above ITV's OMG!OMG! Hamilton and Button OMG!OMG!!!

The 2nd point was meant to say that, let's take stock in that it's good to have some Classic F1 this year, rather than nothing at all. I know "be thankful" is kinda an annoying thing to hear, yeah there are some other good races that won't be shown this year, but hey just watch the races they show and see if you enjoy it.
If there's a race you desperately want to see, why not give it a plug when Singapore comes around. If there's enough popularity for it, I'm sure the Beeb will consider.

Like others, i'll have to go for 1987 so we get the beebs extended highlights, though it was also a great race and atmosphere.
If there is a 2nd choice, 1998 was a classic. Schumachers most exciting, incident packed season in my opinion.

I'm a bit confused as to why the beeb can't show the full highlights of the 1973 GP, as they have been shown on a number of ocassions on ESPN classic. Did the BBC sell the rights to the footage we get on ESPN?
From the selection of SILVERSTONE classic moments (as Andrew said in his blog guys, so GP's at Brands don't count!), i'd pick the 1987 and 1981 extended highlights for the main reason that I really enjoy the nostalgia of seeing the full broadcast of the older GP's (I thought the graphics on the opening/closing sequences of the '82 Monaco GP were really funny - I can imagine people back in the day saying "wow, look at those graphics! Cutting edge stuff!)
Is there a possibility of seeing any of footage of the 1969 duel between Rindt & Stewart? Both drivers were good friends and had a huge battle throughout the race until Rindt's car started to fail. Stewart magaged to pull alongside and warn Jochen that his car was failing, prompting Rindt to retire.
I'll be sad to see Silverstone leave the calander, but i'm frustrated that more people are not getting behind the Donington project. Surely it's better that we have a GP than none at all, also Donington is a great track with a lot of history. They also have the Grand Prix collection on site, which is a must for any F1 fan.

I am all up for 1987 but where did the other choices come from?
There are surely much better options, e.g. Mansell in the underpowered Judd-engined Williams in '88 taking on the McLarens and Ferraris, or anything from the early to mid '90s (British winners - Mansell, Hill and Herbert).
As some other people are disappointed in the choice of races, how's this for an idea? Instead of giving a choice of five races, how about asking bloggers for their suggestions for classic years and if the archive allows show the highlights for the most popular choices.

1987 and '81 for me.
I remember watching the '87 race, (still have it on VHS because i taped it at the time). In the previous race at Paul Ricard Piquet changed tyres and Mansell didnt. Mansell won. So i expect Piquet thought he'd try to go full distance at silverstone to beat Mansell on home turf. Oops. Classic era, classic Silverstone layout. (would be nice to see the '86 race from Brands as well though)

For me it has to be 1987 - I was there in the crowd and the atmosphere was electric. I am Piquet fan and it was not my ideal result, but what a race!
The other race British GP that stands out for me is the 1986 British GP that was the last race at Brands Hatch - a far better track in my opinion than Silverstone. That too was a Willams Mansell/Piquet battle.

the '73 and '77 have been on ESPN Classic recently and the '73 (complete with commentary by Mr Stewart) would surely be anyones 1st choice. It's a shame you haven't included the Donnington GP (I know it was a European GP - not British...) that would be great too.

1. I'm bummed that there is no real old school race in the mixer this time round. As people have said, footage certainly exists. Better luck next year I suppose.
2. As for more recent efforts, I'd have liked to have seen 1992 in the mixer, for the legendary track invasion if nothing else.
3. Out of the five nominated. Hmmm...'03 is only remembered because of the mad priest and '98 because of Schumacher's dirty tricks. '08 was awesome but the 80s races also sound quality so I'll go old school.

i get the impression the BBC archive is in a complete mess!! There is no doubt about that!
As has already been mentioned, ESPN Classic have recently broadcasted 1973 and 1977 - footage that was taken from the BBC!!!! What on earth is going on here?!
Anyway, obviously 1987 is going to win...it was a great race though!
I'm always very disappointed to see races from this decade on here, as I feel its a waste and they do not qualify as classics. The point is surely to see things we haven't seen in ages and that is rare. Just a waste of space if you ask me. 1981 has my vote from this selection.
What about Hunt at Brands Hatch 1976? Or did the BBC not record it due to sponsorship issues? That race is legendary, and features the man that gave so much to the BBC coverage.
Andrew, one very, very special and desperate request! do you think you could show a very historical and famous qualifying session (i.e. 1985)? This featured the most powerful cars in the history of GP, Keke Rosberg's record 160 mph qualifying lap! Trust me, this will be popular with all - in qualifying trim 1200 bhp plus. I have been desperate to see that for years. Come on Andrew, you know it makes sense! Silverstone was super fast then although Woodcote had a chicane, it was still a quick right left right. That lap just has to be seen. If you could show that quali in full, or even highlights form, you have my vote for prime minister.

Dont wish to sound cheeky, but the British Public pay for the BBC, we should have a bigger say on what we want. Perhaps in future, merely tell us which races are available and then we can vote?

On a slightly related topic. Tom Pryce's memorial plaque was unveiled in my home town of Ruthin today by David Richards of ProDrive. It would be nice to see some footage of his win at Brands Hatch in the 1975 Race of Champions which I believe is in the BBC vault somewhere as the other 1970's events have been shown on ESPN Classic over the last few years.
I'm sure there has been a documentary about Tom on BBC Wales a few years back which would be nice to see on the red button over the Silverstone weekend

I wasn't overawed with Lewis Hamilton's win last year, mainly because the Ferrari was so poor in cold and wet conditions with the front tyres. People make a fuss about Massa spinning five times, but in reality I don't think he had the car underneath him to get around the circuit at racing speed. Watch his spin at the final corner onboard and just how little throttle he applied and still spun. Brundle commented how surprised he was.
I think you can strike out Ferrari from comparing Hamilton's performance with, because as I've suggested I think the Ferrari had a critical weakness in cold conditions on hard tyres.
And his teammate, clearly lacked performance even compared to the BMWs and Renaults. I don't think Slowvalainen's a noteable measure, just like Piquet isn't with Alonso.
I think Donnington 1993 was a better drive because of 1) the performance relativity of Senna in the McLaren to the Williams Renaults who had the same tyres, traction control, and a quality #1 performing driver, and 2) because he maintained his performance advantage throughout all conditions wet and dry. Hamilton was not able to match Raikkonen's pace on the drying track I thought.

I'm definitely gonna throw my hat in for instating 1995 here! Along with the Schumacher/Hill incident, we're forgetting the Coulthard stopgo penalty giving Herbert the win and the lastlap Barrichello/Brundle accident!
But out of all the ones there 2003 and 1998 ive got and 2008's too recent. I'll go with 1987

1987. I was there. I was eleven and it was the first ever British GP i'd been to (although I was at Brands for the qualifying for the European GP in 86 but we weren't there on raceday). It was a great day. Great atmosphere. I was perched on a black and decker workmate leaning on my dad's shoulder's who was stood in front of me at the top of the grass banking at Vale - before it was moved further in and in those days before there was safety fencing - just a guard rail. I had a radio walkman tuned into the Silverstone Radio and was shouting out the times for everyone around as the noise of the cars was drowning out the PA system - loads of complete strangers came and thanked me afterwards which was nice. We watched in slack jawed disbelief at Mansell pulling back a 25 second defecit and when he came past us in the lead just seconds after he'd passed Piquet the place just erupted.
So 1987 please. The complete race would be awesome if possible.

Without a doubt it would have to be 1987 Mansells historic drive to an unbelievable win over his team mate braking the lap record lap after lap it is the one race that I have tried to find but could only find the clip of him passing his team mate on the hanger straight would love to see the whole race again

because it was all about the tash and the eyebrows for me.
Lewis' drive in the wet was stunning, eclipsing what Shuey did in Spain years earlier.
But that was last year, with inferior ITV commentary.
Seeing a Rubens win could be fateful, as he hasn't won a race yet this season...

From the five options it is very diffcult for me to choose between 1981 and 1987.
I have been very luck to have been at every British GP since 1975. I fact given a free choice I would go for 1978. Watching at a Grang Prix Paddock Hill was an experince not to be missed! With the retirement of Andretti and Peterson the battle for the lead involved a train of 8 cars for lap after lap. Reuterman finally getting the best of Lauda at Clearways with a wonderful piece of opportunistic driving.
On reflection I would go for 1987 as I can remeber checking my stopwatch to check the gap between Piquet and Mansell lap after lap to see if they would be close before the laps ran out.
So let's have the whole race please! Oh and any footage of 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978.
Oh 1979? That reminds me Regga winning for Williams.

It has to be '87.
Like a few others, esp #25, I was at that year's race with my family - on the infield halfway down Hangar Straight. Back then there were no WAP-enabled mobiles or giant screens - you had to piece together the radio or trackside commentary when you could hear it and wait anxiously for the cars to come round again. There was a family next to us with a radio but we couldn't hear the lead Piquet had very well, so I too started to time the gap on my analogue Timex watch... until it became clear it was plummeting.
The hairs on the back of my neck still stand up when I *think* about leaning over the fence to watch the two Williams batter down the straight... then Mansell moves one way... the other way... the deafening roar as he took the corner... and the even more deafening roar when they came past us on the next lap with Mansell free and clear in 1st.
Wow, everytime I think of that race I choke up and get emotional.
That's why - for anyone that thinks '87 is overdone - for me it just has to be shown!
And '81 2nd vote, because I love seeing days gone by. The cars in the races chosen from the '90s and this decade are all too modern.

I'm always a little self-serving in my votes for this feature because I tend to go for the races I know the least about. My favourite is 2003 but I have that race on video already so I would have to vote for 1987.
That way we get the full Grand Prix broadcast as well right? ;)

Our next choice is 1998, when Michael Schumacher took one of many controversial victories for Ferrari.
At the end of a soaking wet race, in which he and McLaren's Mika Hakkinen had staged a superb fight, the German actually crossed the line in the pit lane, into which he had come to serve a stop-go penalty for overtaking while yellow warning flags were being waved - which meant he had not actually served the penalty at all.

1987 without a doubt. 1986 would've been another good option - winning the restart in a car set-up for Piquet, plus it was my first Grand Prix experience. 1987 is just as memorable though.
If, at some point, you run a blog for classic Hungarian Grand Prix, put me down for 1989. If the highlights from the 1987 BGP don't demonstrate a masterclass in overtaking, Hungary 1989 will.

I've not seen the earlier race whereas I have seen 1987 completely.

I knew this would be a tough one, there are so many great races to choose from at Silverstone. My choice would probably be 1987 first choice, and 2008 second choice. I certainly remember the latter more vividly and completely agree with another comment above - Lewis didn't sem to even notice it was raining just a bit! I'm lucky enough to have that race on my hard drive though, so it's got to be 1987 please. Oh, and thank you BBC for this opportunity to see classic races again - it really is a brilliant innovation and I look forward to it every time!

Loved th 80's era
87 a classic
I felt amoment in 1991 -The Taxi - which changed everyones perspective on the rivalry of Senna & Mansell.
2008 very memorable as i got a good view of Hamilton pass the finish line 1st and the Ferraris constantly spinning off.
I've looked on Youtube at loads of the replays.

It has to be 1987, with that fantastic move by Mansell on the Hanger Straight. Nigel always appeciated his fans and treated them to action packed races, especially at Silverstone. I love Murray's shouting in the background as James Hunt Commentates!!
It's interesting that Nigel Mansell is featuring a lot in these classic Grand Prix selections. Like him or not, he delivered drama by the bucket load.

There have been many great races at Silverstone but there's only one choice really for a British classic. 1987. British driver, British team, the home of British motor racing, Murray Walker counting down the gap in front of a frenzied British crowd. Pure drama and entertainment. A memorable memorable day. I was born on the way back from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and have many memories from over the years. It will be a sad day next weekend when we pack up to come home but hopefully we have time yet for one more British victory.

Defo show full highlights of 1987, our Nige's greatest ever drive without question, Nuff Said.
How come 1995 wasn't there. You have to show full highlights of that one too. A fantastic race saw Damon Hill infront with M Schumacher trying hard to keep with him. Then after the final pitstops Schumacher got infront with Hill chasing him down, only to make a crazy move into priory and taking them both out. The battle was then copied by their team mates David Coulthard and Johnny Herbert with DC making a brilliant move on hanger straght, only to be punished with a stop & Go penalty for speeding in the pitlane. It was left to Johnny to take a his maiden win. Looking back watching it Live, i remember being sooooo happy for Johnny.
As for the the other 3, gotta show 1991, just for the sight of Mansell stopping to give Ayrton Senna a lift back to the pits.
Also 2003, prob one of the most entertaining races of recent times without a doubt, tons and tons and tons of overtakeing.
And finally 2008, certainly Lewis Hamilton's finest win so far, a truely dominant performance that put all the other drivers to shame.

1998 for me. A fantastic race in the very very wet, the favorites in the two McLarens spinning at one stage or another, umbrella's flying across the track and that crazy crazy end. Has to be 98 for me, followed by 2003 which was a classic of the modern era.

Sadly I wanted 1994 to be listed as I really wanted to see that race as Damon Hill won, Schumacher got black flagged! Wow Princess Diana gave out the trophies too. What a race but how many times do we have to see Mansell selling Piquet that dummy? What a move that was because the two were driving exactly the same car (Williams) but Coulthard did a similar move on Barrichello once and not many people remember that due to the Mansell and Piquet race. Why was 2003 a good race, might have to watch the end of year DVD to see. I liked the 1998 race as no one knew who had won, Schumacher had won...
Well 1987 Will win so it should be that but could we have full high lights of the 1998 race too, I wasn't a Schumacher fan but it was still a good race!! it's a shame that the BBC's Sports department can't nick BBC2 for a couple of hours and give Silverstone a good send off!

Agree with most but 2008 was a bit dull; 1999 was pretty good: Schuey crashed, Mika's wheel fell off, DC won with Irvine 2nd. Plus it was Damon's last British GP and he finished 5th which was the best result for home drivers since - literally - the Medieval period.
From a purely personal perspective, I'd also like to add that, unlike last year I didn't leave the circuit with trench foot.

Just to take up a few of the points you have made:
If the highlighted race is pre-1997, you will get the full highlights programme. If it is since 1997 ie, when ITV had the rights we will only be able to provide a five-minute package.
Archive yes we are aware that these races are available on youtube and other similar sites because of the ESPN Classic broadcasts. We are looking into this. As to some of your remarks about the races we have chosen, and the ones we have left out, some of those decisions were made based on what was available to show you, and some on the races themselves. As I said in the blog, it was a tough decision. And remember, there is always next year.
Why cant we tell you whats available and have you vote on it? Two reasons. Firstly, we dont have the resources to do that. Sourcing and editing this video is quite a lengthy process and we have to start it well before I publish this blog. Secondly, the BBC takes voting extremely seriously, and if we were to build a significantly robust voting system for the BBC to allow us to actually have a vote on this as opposed to asking you for your views, as is the case here, and having them inform our choice it would require vastly more resources than could be justified for a relatively low-key feature such as this. We all love F1, but in the wider battle for resources at the BBC its not going to compete with preparing for a general election, for example, is it?

You guys do such a top job, you don't get the credit. I love old F1 and we get to see the BBC archive tapes broadcast digitally rather than our own 20-year decayed VHS versions.

I like 1981, wasn't Piquet in a streak of crashing out of races then? I'm sure he did 3 or 4 in a row. Imagine if someone crashed that much these days. Suppose if they won the title like Nelson they'd be alright.

I vote 2008 but as it's such a recent race I don't hold out much hope for it to be the highlights winner.
Would love highlights of it though as it was the only race I missed the coverage of last year - I was on the holiday from hell in Corfu and I was completely gutted not to see Silverstone.

If races post-1997 (ITV) can only be shown in five minute segments, then couldn't the choice be made solely on the pre-1997 BBC options. That way we are assured of getting a full highlights programme and people will get the chance to see something that is not so fresh in the memory.
At the risk of sounding cheeky, for races that have no real history, (Singapore and Abu Dhabi), could we please have highlights for races that are no longer on the calender, e.g. Austria, Portugal, South Africa, Mexico etc?

It has to be '87 as my 1st choice - the 2 Williams-Honda team mates (mates the wrong word surely?) engaged in a titanic battle, ending up with our Nige getting mobbed by excited fans. Then I'd say '81, mainly because it started a rich vein of success for the Ron Dennis era at McLaren (and I'm sure 'Inside F1' regular John Watson himself wouldn't say no). Finally '98 - what a strange win for Schumi that was - I can almost imagine Jean Todt & Ross Brawn skimming through the FIA rule book to see if they could get away with it!

Re post and pre 1997 footage and the effort required to edit it. In my opinion, the solution is quite simple. Forget the ITV era (1997-2008). I for one (and i'm sure most racing purists will agree) do not believe any of the the races in that timespan qualify as classics, and it is extremely annoying when people request for such races. They are much too recent, splashed all over the internet and many people have their own personal recordings anyway. In future, I would be delighted if none of these races pop up for voting. Plus your colleagues can save a hell of a lot of time with editing! Everyone's a winner. Instead, I hope you could focus on a "Grand Prix Gold" theme. Not necessarily older the better but anything after 1994 is just too recent to give the concept any value. For instance, I have seen nothing of the 1974 season other than the British GP broadcasted on ESPN Classic, it would be nice to get a better picture of what that season was like. Would be nice if we could go beyond the cliche's!
But once again, thank youvery much for listening, over all i am impressed with the way how the bbc f1 team are trying to take on board what the viewers want. ITV never did!
A heads up for you. The 1971 Italian Grand Prix, do the BBC have it? A must! 1955 Monza would be nice too as they used the banking.

2008 was a magical race, seeing Massa doing a 360 spin on numerous occasions made me chuckle and who can forget Nick Heidfeld's move on the final corner when he took both the Ferrari and Renault?
Not so much the race being great but 1999, when Schumacher broke his leg? I was only young at the time but remember it like yesterday as he locks his tyres hits the wall and tries to get back up but can't...memories!!

Spookily, I recently found an old VHS tape that has the entire 3 hour BBC broadcast of 1987, with all the pre-race buildup including interviews with a much younger looking Jackie Stewart and Greg Norman, there as a guest of Mansell, right through to the post race interviews.
So, found a working VHS player, figured out how to use my camcorder to digitise it and transferred the lot to my PC, which I now have as a 700mb AVI. Nice! Had as much fun watching it now as a 38yr old with 2 kids in Switzerland as I did as a 16yr old who had just finished their 'O' levels.
Pity there's no way to legally share it. :-(

Hi Andrew. From the options, I would choose 1987. I was there on the inside of the track at Abbey. What a fantastic atmosphere, especially when Nige entered Stowe in the lead.
But I have to agree with Senna27 #70. It would be brilliant if you could show Keke's qually lap in 1985. I was privileged to be stood on the grass bank at the top of the vertical railway sleepers that were the 'safety measures' in those days at the exit of Club. No massive runoffs, and seriously FAST cars. You could see that Keke was fantastically fast coming down Hangar straight and didn't seem to lift going through Stowe. Foot to the board and into Club, again without seeming to lift. We were stood feet away from his car as it's tyres screamed over the rumble strips as he blasted out of Club. That man had B**** of steel. I still get a tingle thinking about it!
See what you & Auntie Beeb can do Andrew. Some of the qually sessions in the early '80s were brilliant. I can remember Mansell losing out to Senna, Prost, Piquet at Brands, so just before the end of the session, he put on the best 4 random scrubbed tyres he could find, and stuck it on pole!!

Dear BBC,
Just a bit of advice for the Silverstone weekend. Can you please not bang on about that fact that just because Silverstone is losing the British Grand Prix, doesn't mean the British Grand Prix is disappearing forever. It will be going to Donington Park either in 2010 or defiantly in 2011. They BRDC people that are the people moaning easily forget that Donington Park was holding historic Grand Prixs in the 1930's when Silverstone didn't even exist as an Airfield, let alone a racing circuit. So people that say Silverstone has so much history are looking through blinkered vision, impaired by their selfish feeling or their prized commodity losing its most valued asset. I am not a fan of Bernie and i do agree that he is ripping F1 apart by the seams, but with this deal to go to Donington, he is guaranteeing that the British Grand Prix stays on the F1 calender.
P.S. I am loving the coverage this year and this Classic F1 series is really the icing on the cake!

Hi Andrew
If you are having problems in finding older footage for later races i have a digital copy of the 1973 German Grand Prix with no commentators just the tannoy system, the cars and a noisy helicopter. It is an ARD broadcast but as i said no commentating a great base for Jackie Stewart and Murray Walker to do a spot of commentating on as Jackie started from pole and with his team mate Francois Cervert left the rest of the field standing. Not certain about rights etc but if it is of use please feel free to let me know. I really miss seeing the 1960's and 1970's races, i watched as a teenager, and try to pick up the odd VHS copies every now and again to supplement my collection. If you could find some of the earlier races for each GP it would be an absolute bonus as i feel that the era of BRM, Lotus Williams, Ferrari et al is an exhibition of true racers no electronics, no telemetry, no radio's just pit boards and up to 700 BHP. A real race car!

The idea of the classic F1 GP highlights is fantastic, but please take on board the views of the hardcore F1 fans who have previously mentioned the "no show" on the Freeview service.
I can't believe that Britain's premier motorsport event is not supported on Freeview.
Why can't some Bod(remember him?) at the Beeb arranged for the highlights to be shown on Sunday morning before the build up to the 2009 event?
A la Spanish GP weekend coverage.
Come on Beeb, show us that you care!
