Man fear
Troubled times for African men?
... been listening to Gladys Njoroge's report from the men-who-feel-under-attack debate in Nairobi. One bloke was near to tears at the thought of being surplus to his girlfriend's requirements because she could pay her own rent. bless!
Do African women need a fella in modern society where they have financial independence? What's you view?
Isn't it about negotiating a relationship with roles both partners are comfortable with?
Come on guys - stop feeling sorry for yourselves - manhood isn't a mono-dimensional thing!

Hi Caroline.
Your comments interested me. I wonder if the rapidly changing society of developed African countries really want to continue in their traditional ways, or if they ought to make a break from them (or evolve them?) in such a way that creates marriage as a union of love between a man and a woman rather than the cause for one to rely on the other. I think that it isn't so much an issue of men needing to get over themselves as you seem to claim. I think that the issue of women being equal to men in developed African countries is about as mind-boggling as equating gay marriage with straight marriage in places like America and Europe.
Perhaps, though, our western ideology is too cemented that we don't see the value in things like unions formed from love or that in order to be equal, men and women ought to accept each other as equals.

I think women's rights are overrated in America and underrated in Africa. After all according to the Global Gender Gap Index, published by the World Economic Forum (2009), two southern African states - South Africa and Lesotho - are among the top 10 countries where women face the least discrimination. While in America, women CEOs are still celebrated as novel and women are still being paid less than men for equal work. With all due respect to all, I think it is time to stop relying on stereotypes and outmoded generalizations and start looking at real statistics.
