Describe in a Tweet: The new album intrigues but it's the classics that bring the house down.
What happened: You'd need to be a little bit dead inside not to find Richie Egan endearing. Switching from egg shaker to keyboard to guitar the frontman tries his best to engage with the crowd and for the most part he succeeds, bringing some energy to a crowd that looked a little lethargic. So what about the actual performance? Opening with I Was A Man Jape quickly set out their stall, providing some delightful pop with electronica and disco overtones in the process. Egan clearly has confidence in his newest material, providing for a significant part of the setlist, and in reality it's more of what we've come to expect: keyboard infused upbeat pop with simple refrains and back to basics drumming. Hands On Fire, the upcoming single, is a perfect example of this. We're treated to a Redneck Manifesto track as our finale, rounding off things nicely. This crowd wanted to dance and they left satisfied, albeit with a little bit more guitar pop than they might have expected.
Swoon: An extended and reworked version of Floating wins the crowd over, and then some. Egan plays to his strengths and he promises the hits for the crowd's patience with the new material: the band deliver them with aplomb.
Funeral: It would be a different story if Jape played the new material to a gig in the Olympia or Mandela, but a festival crowd needs a little bit of accommodation. While the new tracks are fairly strong leaving Strike Me Down and the like until the end meant that Egan's efforts to build up energy in the set early on were almost pointless as they lost momentum.
