Har Mar Superstar Q & A

Post categories:

ATL | 21:02 UK time, Tuesday, 8 December 2009

Think of Har Mar Superstar and the chances are the image of a sweaty Sean Tillmann gyrating in his undies or the giant inflatable dolphin from the 'EZ Pass' video will come to mind. Glorious I'm sure you'll agree!

Har Mar Superstar's music has aptly being described as "lewd R n'B" in the past and his shows have become the stuff of legend. After spending some time on his other alter egos, Tillmann return as Har Mar this year and a new album called 'Dark Touches'. So what has he in store for us when he arrives in Belfast tomorrow night? We caught up with Har Mar the other week to subject him to the ATL Q&A grilling...

Har_Mar.jpgHello there, and how the Dickens are you right now?
I'm great. I'm currently in one of my hometowns, Minneapolis, having some free time and gearing up for Thanksgiving dinner with my family. I love non-religious holidays based on food.

Why the heck should we give a stuff about you then ;)?
I'm the best. Thanksgiving is all about stuffing, so I'll be chock full of it when I arrive on your shores. Otherwise, you can just watch and learn at my Dublin gig. There aren't words...

Topical Question of the Week - Children In Need raised £20 million smackers to give to charities. What is the most amount of money you have ever raised for anything, either charity or for yourself?
Not sure what the most is, but I was most proud of my accomplishments as a child in the Multiple Sclerosis Read-A-Thon and Jump Rope for Heart. I also raised a lot for the AIDS Ride (charity bike ride). There were certain rewards such as free trip to Valleyfair, a Minnesota Timberwolves satin jacket, and some futuristic shades that I took home. I'm all about prize packages.

Your live sets are regarded as a high octane party-fest. What city in the whole wide world is the best to party in and why?
I think New Orleans might be the best city in the world to party in. The place never stops, there's always something weird and interesting going on, and you can take away drinks from the bar. The place is rebuilding nicely. I'm glad to see it getting back on it's feet.

Your house has been maliciously set ablaze by as yet un-named evil forces, but you have the strength to battle the flames and fumes to rescue one piece of music, what is it and why?
In a flash of ironic intent I would save Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning and listen to it while I watch the sucker burn. Clever, eh?

Tell us your favourite one-liner...
This is a Zach Galifianakis quote: "In the ghetto, do they call it Ask Body Spray?" He's the best. In case you don't get it, Axe is the Lynx of the US.

Sexuality is a huge part of your image. Do you think there is any possibility of you going straight and perhaps releasing and touring an album that won't need a Parental Advisory sticker on the front? Is there any chance of seeing you in a knitted jumper by a fire singing crooner songs?
I have a lot of different alter-egos, so there is a chance one of them won't be reliant on blatant sexuality someday. For instance, Sean Na Na songs are mostly rooted in love/hate relationships and sexual disfunction. Maybe it's time for a kids record.

It's been five years since the last Har Mar record, apart from your foray with Neon Neon what have you been doing with yourself?
I made a Sean Na Na album, made 20+ comedy shorts under the moniker Crappy Holidays with Ryan Rickett and John Ringhoff, toured a lot, wrote a screenplay with Justin Long, and I'm currently developing a TV series with Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat for HBO.

Tell us this, if your band was a film, which film would you be and why?
Glitter. That film would've been much better if it focused on me instead of Mariah. No disrespect. I just have a more slammin' body.

Who is the greatest human to have ever lived?
Harry Nilsson. He was a magical beast with a golden voice that was everywhere all of the time. I want to be him.

Lastly, in three words describe life, the universe and everything within it...
Macaroni and Cheese.
