Mediacove Productions, the creative production arm of City of Wolverhampton College, arranged a series of training groups that started last October. They asked young people to explore their thoughts about their city and the barriers they face, using media such as video and photography to share their ideas. ![]() Our Wall contributors They were asked to create and submit original films, photos, artwork and audio projects - news, music, even mini dramas - all exploring what they think are the biggest barriers in the city and suggesting ways to break down that wall. Their efforts lead to the creation of Our Wall - a website and exhibition where any young person in Wolverhampton (aged 12 to 20) can get involved. Jenny Evans, Mediacove Productions, said: "The project is all about young people expressing their ideas and opinions whilst showcasing their creativity. It is their chance to get their views heard online and as part of a unique and exciting exhibition." Breaking down barriersThose who took part in the project think that it has gone a long way to help young people in the city - giving them an understanding of others and making them feel their voice is important. ![]() Our Wall contributors Hortence Caines who took part in the project said: "Our Wall is something that young people are interested in because it allows them to upload stuff about their issues or views about life. "I learned a lot about Wolverhampton believe it or not! And about teamwork, the use of colours in thinking up ideas for websites, what makes things stand out - what gets you thinking. "Everyone in the training group was really friendly, but there were people I met who I wouldn't normally meet, pick as friends or speak to. It started breaking down the barriers straight away. We are all from different background and cultures." Getting yourself heardAdam Cooper also took part in the project: "Young people need somewhere where they can air their views in a creative/productive way. The Wall gives people a place they can do this." Through the project Adam said he'd learnt about the barriers that other young people face. Lee Sandel feels the younger generation can shed light on things that ‘older people’ might not think about. ![]() Our Wall contributor "Young people, when given the opportunity, can express issues from a different point of view and may even bring up issues that the older generation may not be aware of," said Lee. He continued: "There are many mature, bright youngsters who are, with a little help, capable of changing their ideas into reality to improve their local area. "Most people have an opinion on things within their communities. I've learned that you can't complain or moan about something if you yourself are not working hard to eliminate the problem." Help make the changesSheetal Mair took part in the project because she wanted to give something back to the community. She feels the project "has helped young people understand that Wolverhampton is a multi-cultural and fascinating city. It's gives them the tools to understand and breakdown any barriers they have within the city and also personal ones too." ![]() Our Wall contributor Sheetal continued: "There is always something more beneath the surface, and it’s worth taking the time to try and make the change that you want to see around you, for the better." Young people have until 18th March to submit work for the Our Wall exhibition (which will be a showcase of the best work produced) and until 5th April to get their project showcased on the website. Our Wall exhibition is being held in the Wulfrun Centre Piazza from March 23rd to 30th. For more information visit Our Wall website or contact Mediacove Productions on 01902 317646.
