Now, a year later, he's at it again - with tartan! ![]() Phil Tibbetts' Halesowen tartan kilt Phil, from Halesowen, says that it was his time as a student in Scotland that first gave him the idea. "On a personal note too I hate wearing tuxedos," he says. "I thought that a kilt would be quite fun - what tartan can I get? I thought it would be quite fun to design a Black Country specific tartan and make a kilt out of it." Phil has actually come up with two different tartans, one for the Black Country and another specifically for Halesowen. The Halesowen tartan consists of blue which represents the football and rugby teams and the original twelfth century coat of arms. ![]() BBC WM's Chris Blakemore in the BC kilt The Black Country tartan is mainly black (for obvious reasons!) but also contains some white to represent the area's old iron industry, red derived from the old saying that the Black Country is 'black by day and red by night' and yellow for the ancient flag of Mercia. Both are now officially recognised and listed in the Scottish Tartan World Register and Phil has the certificates as proof. "I just want people to have fun with them," says Phil. "'I'm not trying to force a dress code on the Black Country. The tartan doesn't have to be used for a kilt it can be used for anything - a tie, a baseball cap. They've got a great reaction - I'm really pleased."
