Barry-no-more!

In the wake of the controversy caused by a pub naming one of its faggot dishes the Barrymore Pie, we caught up with owner Peter Towler for an update.

Several weeks ago, we asked for your opinions on Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory in Tipton's decision to name one of its faggot dishes the Barrymore Pie.

Peter Tatchell from the gay rights group OutRage! had told BBC WM that most lesbian and gay people would find the pie's title - a clear reference to TV presenter Michael Barrymore - offensive.

As you can see from the message board below, we had a lot of feedback!

At the time, Peter Towler, owner of Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory in Tipton - insisted that the name of the pie was never intended to cause offence and that it was "all about having a laugh."

We spoke to Mr. Towler recently to see what his views are now.

"Since the story broke, trade has gone up dramatically," he said. "Virtually all the response has been positive. I don't mean from our regulars; they've been coming here for years and got the joke.

"I mean from new customers, some of whom have come to see what all the fuss is about. I've had e-mails from gay-rights groups in America supporting it. We have removed the reference to 'swimming with gravy' when describing the dish from our website.

"You must remember it was all done in jest. We never intended to cause offence to anyone."

Name change

Peter revealed that he has changed the name of the pie:

"We've called it the Barry-no-more pie! We did have a debate about what to change its name to. Someone suggested the PC (politically correct) pie, or maybe the Barry-no-mates pie.

"I think we'll change the name of it on a regular basis now, just for a bit of fun."

However, the Black Country Tourism Official Website have removed all references of Mad O'Rourke's Pie Factory from their site.

Their Head of Tourism Pauline Jones said: "We took it off until Mr. Towler had made a decision about what to do with the name of the pie. I'll be meeting with management to see what to do now.

"I don't think he meant any offence at all but we had pressure from our sponsors to remove the pub's name from our site."

What do you think? Tell us below!

Gay couple Wolverhampton
I agree that the pub has the rights to call its dishes any name it wishes....But surely the Black Country is well known for Faggots? why call it anything to do with Barrymore ,if not trying to insult gay people?Gay people havent demanded the renaming of the famous and delicious Black Country dish! Just for a bunch of small minded people to grow up and stop degrading gay folk! What next Mad O'Rourkes...A dish to poke fun at david blunkett? I hate PC red tape, but adore kindness it is so much nicer.Gay people are the sweetest, kindest, most artistic, warmest and most thoughtful people in the world. And since the beginning of time all they've ever been is kicked.

Heather Callahan
Expensive and in bad taste?....emm sums up the pie factory. Food is awful

pete sword
about time some people got a humour transplant. And as for the Black Country Tourism organisation, about time it listened to the majority of its constituents, (the black country people) and not the minority of silly campaigners who have nothing more important to get on with.

James
I hate Barrymore, and the joke is verrrrrrrrrry funny!

Stu from Tipton .
I'm a tipton bloke ( tipun as we call it.) born bred and proud of it . I'M remotely offened by the name of the barrymore pie .don,t these people think there are far more pressing issues to protest over in the world today for christsake .by the way i'm a regular in the pie factory as it's only 10 minutes from my home and i'm not about to bycote the place over somthing so petty , come on people wake up and get a grip on life .

Michelle
Well i dunno what all the fuss is about i was bread and born in thr black country and now live in carlisle i really miss the black country food uppss hopw we can say black country

Dave hunt
Barrymore should be honoured to have anything named after him. After all He is now as popular as having headlice!

george
homosexuals stol;e tyhe word foggot? im sorry but thats a lie hetrosexuals use that word to offend homosexuals

BigArf
Great name for a dish, (faggots)a savoury, a piece of wood etc;(gay)happy, joyful etc: both these words have been stolen by homosexuals, so why should they complain when they are used for their original meanings.

Philomena
These PC people need to get a sense of humour transplant. If they went to the pub they would know this is a friendly pub with wonderful staff who would never mean to be offensive to anyone.

Rob laceby, Wolverhampton
Well, I like a faggott occasionally and I cant really see the problem.

pitt
very tasty pie, glad they havent abolished it!

adam james
its class i been there on many occasions and had the very same pie and many other pies its just a wiked atmosphere i hope people in the uk open more pubs like this

Steve Clarke
Looks very tasty, can't wait to try. You can't buy advertising like this, bostin

Swampy
Its a joke, good on them. i hope they sell millions

Black Country Brain
Martyn Williams - Can you tell me why you think it is outrageous that this name has been used in a pub and yet you think it is acceptable to suggest that all black country people are small minded? Hypocrisy springs to mind.About the title, I'm in a gay relationship and it's just a joke! We spend way too much time getting offended about things. Come on guys, let's learn to laugh again!

America calling
Having moved to America I thought that people's spelling was bad here, reading this thread makes me see that it is just as bad in Blighty now too. Oh, and about Barrymore Pie, it's a joke, a joke!!! Get off your soap boxes people and laugh!!

Chris Philpott
People really need to calm down and get over themselves. Alot of people are far too ready to say, "Oh that offends me," and then what? Somebody else is supposed to shut up? Why? I'm sure this food title was made up in a very tongue in cheek manner, not as a totally blatent homophobic comment. Everything has to be so p.c these days and it is getting really old.

Ben Dover
Hey Guys whats the problem? I think its hilarious! Too much PC going on in this world, besides its his pub and he can call it what he likes, if the Patrons dont like it ... well leave!

Supressed Government employee
I got into trouble at work for even mentioning this article that I had seen on the news website. I was talking to a gay friend about it and somebody overheard me...

stephen potts
all the way from Canada-relax and put your energy towards better targets

martyn williams
typical of small minded black country people to be so offensive. I think it's disgusting. As a gay man myself,I find it offensive to be called a 'faggot'.It's not only aimed at Michael Barrymore. It's aimed at gay people on a whole.

Terry Tonsils
The world has not gone mad, it just needs to take a deep breath and look at the wider picture. People should not be afraid of calling a spade a shovel,or this area The Black Country, and as for Billys comment, the only Hate Crime would be in his actions.

Gina tonks
Its disusting it is saying that gay people (of which Barrymore is one of) are 'faggots'. if a racist comment was made in the same way there would be uproar. disgusting!!

Jayne Padley
I do find that the naming of this pie is of extremely bad taste. A little more thught should be put into the naming of your products in future to avid offensing people.

wayne butler
it's alwright by me

Philip Cattell
How pathetic, maybe someone ought to invent a dish made with sour grapes and hot air, with no taste whatsoever and call it a Tatchell surprise, or something similar

helen solihull
Oh Grow Up! There are worse things in life get a sense of humour/life/or both!

Richard
Shall we rename the "black country" too? After all it may offend people from ethnic minorites. Peter Tacthell can i thank you for giving this fantasti theme pub loads of free advertising.

stan bunn
what will we have to complain about next,I can see no wrong in it we seem to complain about anything these days

bert ingram stourbridge
over the last 10 years or so barrymore has been the biggest waste of space on tv. if peter towler thinks all his products have funny names then he should rename his barrymore pie with something like tummy mundon. now thers as funny comic

Alan
I think that this naming of a pie is not the best way to advertise it. If it is after Michael Barrymoor it only goes to publicise him and I think that he has done enough of that himself so on the whole I do not agree with this although it is an apt name for him.

PC gone mad
Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it! Ban it!

Don Hanover
You know when people in America hear about a pub across the Atlantic the issue has boiled over. I think the pub has the right to put anything on the menu and the public has the right to support or not support the pub based on the menu or the food or the owner. As a gay man I wouldn't go there.

Baz
People need to lightenup,do you think chris evans would be offended if the pub named it's carrot cake after him? I don't think so. Hey, maybe they should do this with all of their dishes. Maybe dean gafney could be their spotted dick and so on....

Greg
its not "humour" - the word has been in use since the 1800's in a food connotation. It was factual. Some people should get a grip.

JR
I'm gay, and I have no problem with this. It was in good humor.

martin fisher
next we will have to change the name of faggots all together

Emma, Dudley
If people stopped trying to be so PC all the time they might see the joke.

Billy
this is an outrageous move an one which i belive constitutes a hate crime committed by the owners of The Pie Factory. I will be looking to report this as such to West Midlands Police

Bob Pure
The Barrymore pies are GREAT for snowy winter days, Barrymore is a public laughing stock with or without this menu item name IMO. BTW they also have a "Ruby Murrray" pie, and many Irish jokes bedecking the bar. They racist too ? Lighten up FFS.

Dan of Dudley
should I now complain about the pie named after me - I am Dan and I am not Desperate ( for anything ) can I get someone to sue on my behalf - no win no fee

Will Youds
The comment IS homophobic and Mr Tatchill is right to challenge it.Worse still this is in complete bad taste as I can't put into words the amount of offence it would cause to the Mr Lubblock's friends and family. I love a good joke, but isn't this pub landlord a coward hiding his hateful and mindless disdain for gay people behind a what is really a sick joke.

Paul McDonald, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Being a Gay Man myself, had president of the Gay & Lesbian Society at Jordanstown University, i believe that people in rural areas are less educated in matters of eqaulity among straight and gay people and use those who are different as the butt of their jokes. The jokes on them.

Sam - Birmingham
There's always one person that will find it 'offensive' - personally i just think they need a sence of humor...

Melanie Tanea
The name 'Barrymore Pie' is offensive and should be changed. For goodness sake - as a society we should be moving away from offensive labels like this -and more to the point not letting young people grow up thinking it is okay to use homophobic phrases.

Mike Stevens
What an excellent example of true British humour. I was always taught to be proud to have the ability to laugh at oneself. Humour is the great leveller. Offended? **** Off! Now that's offensive. (No offence meant of course - ask Barrymore himself).

Dude, Birmingham
What next, are we to start calling Faggots meatballs cas its offesive to gays!!

Emma
If barymoore doesn't mind and takes it in jest, then wheres the problem, you dont have to eat them! its just a name, if we want to get petty then 'stright' cut chips are in proper as it refers to hexrasexural people

Phil
That is in bad taste, i'm a gay man and can laugh at myself, however i think it's in bad tatse. Did he not think that it might upset the family of Stuart Lubbock? Think twice you idiot!!!!

Kath, formerly of Tipton
People should get a life and a sense of humour, and stop taking themselves so seriously!

martin, cardiff
I thought that the name and humour was just great. And I'm a gay man!

Ryan Stock-O'Connor
I find this offensive, the memory of a drowning victim and the gay community have to put up with these sort of jokes as they tickle the lowest corm of humour. The best come back to being offended is being to told to get sense of homour. It is isn't PC gone mad it is about respect.

Stumpey of Shifnal
Bostin are kid !

Chris Smith
In response to the majority of people claiming this is an excessively politically correct response to a harmless joke - Associating gay people with the word "faggot" offensive. It's offensive to anyone with the slightest bit of common sense and human decency and breeds hatred and intolerance. Whether it's in the context of a lame joke about a disgraced celebrity or not

Les Farrington, Ontario, Canada.
I was born in Tipton and have lived in Canada for the past 30 years and whilst I don't condone the actions of the pie shop I must admit I did enjoy the wonderfully humourus comparison by Duncan the bricklayer. Now that was funny. A slice of good old English humour sadly missed here in N/America.

Adam
It seems people are looking to be offended by anything these days. I'm a Black Country lad and i'm all for keeping the name of the pie.

Matt Shinn
I am sick to death of stuff like this. People are too scared to speak the way things are, for fear of upsetting someone out there. There is very little you can say that can't be whittled down to an insult somewhere with someone. I was more offending by the "swimming" comment, clearly a reference to the "accident" in the swimming pool. For Gods sake, give yourselves a break!

Steve Sherringham
Gay people are protected by laws and rights just like everyone else and shouldn't pick silly fights like this one. There's no malice or prejudice here. Don't give in Pie Factory.

Cee
Its a wonderful pun aimed at Barrymore himself NOT the gay community. Sticks and stones, people. Repeat - BARRYMORE NOT THE GAY COMMUNITY. My mate is gay and he finds the menu hilarious. Censorship is taking over. Soon we'll won't be able to say anything without annoying someone - for example, by using the Black Country greeting "alright cock?" will you be offending a penis (or someone who thinks its sexual harrassment)...?! Just take away the right to free speech - will that make you all happy?

KEVIN ROWEN ,TIPTON
Nothing on this earth could ever persuade me to have anything to do with Mr Barrymore, the man is a walking disaster, unsure of his gender and surely not to be trusted. I think I'll keep giving the Pie Factory a miss so I am not reminded of him.

Emily
I find this story laughable. The Pie Factory has had the "Barrymore" on it's menu for years so I am very surprised this is making the news now. Surely if people really find it offensive there would have been complaints and the name would have changed a long time ago. As a non heterosexual person myself, I dont find it at all offensive. What I might find offensive though is the assumption that the GLBT community is lacking in enough sense of humour to appreciate a light hearted joke in the non offensive way it was intended. Unfortunately, in this day and age, political correctness and equality no longer go hand in hand.

Duncan
The pie factory is a great place to eat out, Like Pete says, all the dishes have crazy names, its a THEME pub, if gay rights have a problem then let them eat elsewhere, Im a bricklayer for christsake, you dont see me making complaints about pubs called after my arms

Karina Thompson
This is about respect. The term 'Faggot'as well as the famous Black Country delicacy, is an american, derogiatory term for a gay man. The way Mad O'Roukes as using this is to make a nasty unpleasant joke. I think its sad that the name of the pie does not reflect the rich hertiage of the black country but is just a cheap shot. Its not funny. I would like to be treated with the same respect that other minorities are. I have also asked the Black Country Tourism (BCT)website not to promote Mad O'Roukes Pie Factory whilst it is expressing these offensive views. As this site is funded by the EU and the local authorities of Sandwell, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Dudley. The question I would like to ask people of the West midlands are you happy for your taxes to be spent promoting a company that does not understand why jokes about 'faggots' are unacceptable. Oh yes and we are having faggots and peas for tea tomorrow

nicola Smith
I was born and bred in the Black country and have always been proud of it until today. Does he think it would be acceptable to call a gay guy walking down the street "Faggot!"?, probably not. Then why does Peter Towler think his menu comments are"just a joke" and still think this is perfectly acceptable. 10 years ago, people like him, I'm sure, thought it was perfectly acceptable to make jokes, Bernard Manning style, but people, like the lady this morning, stood up for their beliefs and now these kind of jokes and comments are not used...thank god. So instead of kicking her around, making out she has no sense of humour and is being "too PC",he should reconsider re-naming this pie. It really saddens me that he still can't see how offensive he is being to gay people and expect us to tolerate this kind of language without comment.

roger
The name hits the dish bang on its Wonderful well in the theme of the pub. its a pitybarrymore gets publicity though . KEEP THE NAME DONT GIVE IN>
