Billingham comes home

Cradley Heath-born photographer Richard Billingham is displaying his latest exhibition at the new Walsall Art Gallery.


Black Country photographer Richard Billingham returns with his exhibition 'The Black Country at Night' at Walsall's New Art Gallery.

Born in Cradley Heath, Billingham’s work depicts his hometown and is the result of very long exposures in the light of street lamps showing what can be seen in sodium, neon and halogen colours.

Richard, nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001, said: "I wanted to prove you can take good pictures anywhere and the most ‘ordinary’ subject I could think of was the town I grew up in.”

The exhibition runs 19 May–25 June 2006. The gallery opens Tues-Sat 10-5pm and Sun 12-5pm. Tel: 01922 654400.
