Blakenhall Vaisakhi procession 2006

Written by Jujhar Singh, site user
Thousands of Sikhs took part in this year's Vaisakhi procession, from the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Wolverhampton, on the 16 April 2006.

This year’s procession was as vibrant and brimming with energy as usual.  It is always a pleasure and honour to sample the devotional and meditative atmosphere that surrounds these types of events. It really is an air to be sampled.

This year’s procession marks the 307th anniversary of the foundation of the Sikh “Khalsa” (meaning pure) Brother/Sisterhood order.  To become a member of the order is the aim of all Sikhs. It is a life of love, service, truth, honour and meditation – the epitome of a Sikh. This energy could be felt during the procession.

This year also saw the local Sikh Martial Arts team (gatka) make their debut performance - as usually Gatka teams are called in from the surrounding areas. They fought very well and inspired the Wolverhampton congregation.

The local police and community leaders were impressed by the smooth running of the whole operation and commended the Sikh congregation on such a successful event.
