The Oldswinford Pub, Stourbridge

Is that a ghost in the window?

The gentleman ghost

Staff and locals claim that a ghostly presence presides over a Black Country boozer. But is it a case of too many pints or a very strong spirit?

For decades it's been a place of fun and relaxation for Stourbridge residents; a comfy haven to have a drink, meet friends and unwind after a hard day.

But for some of the staff and locals of the Oldswinford Pub in Stourbridge, there is another spirit on display here that you won't find on the top shelf.

""I ran to the fire-escape and screamed at the cleaners to hurry up and get inside!""

Pub manager Annmarie

For them, a ghostly figure of a man watches over the pub, presumably making sure that the beer isn't cloudy.

"The first time I saw him it really spooked me," says Annmarie Wattam, the latest in a long-line of managers to have had an unearthly experience whilst pulling pints.

Where Annmarie saw 'him'

Annmarie saw him approach the door

"I was walking through pub to let the cleaners in, early one morning. I turned round, and there he was. Just casually moving past the bar and towards the door where I'd just come through. I ran to the fire-escape and screamed at the cleaners to hurry up and get inside!"

Indeed, sightings of an old, grey-haired man, clad in a black suit and top hat are part of the rich history of the building, a three hundred-year old structure which was previously a disused doctor’s surgery before it was converted into a pub in 1970. Seemingly everyone who drinks here has a strange story to tell, or knows someone who does.

Jackie Fisher:

Jackie Fisher has seen strange things

Harry Wooldridge has used the pub on practically a daily basis since its opening and has seen dozens of workers- and drinkers- come and go over the years, and has heard all of the tales.

Despite his own admission of being "very cynical about the whole ghost thing," Harry was forced to rethink his position some 12 years ago after his own close encounter. Whilst having a drink at the bar with his son one quiet Sunday afternoon, a framed painting apparently "threw itself off the wall" onto an unsuspecting family, ruining their dinner.

The unfortunate victims though, he quips, "didn't get a refund."

The cellar - some are afraid to go down

The cellar - some are afraid to go down

Unlike Harry, Jackie Fisher believes whole-heartedly that a ghostly presence lives in the pub. Having worked in the kitchen for over eight years, she has seen plates flying around, cups hovering and has witnessed the distress caused to younger employees.

"A lot of the girls now won't go down the cellar alone. We've had relief-managers who've stopped here and haven't slept all week due to noises in the night. A cleaner quit on her first day after seeing him in the mirror in the ladies."

Neighbouring graveyard

Neighbouring graveyard - an explanation?

No-one knows for sure who 'he' is, but given the pub’s proximity to a local cemetery, not to mention Stourbridge folklore that the doctor who originally owned the land committed suicide, there is plenty of fuel for speculation.

Despite the sightings and the stories though, manager Annmarie remains unfazed. "He’s looking after me!" she laughs.

"Seriously, I was skeptical of the supernatural thing before coming here, but now I'm convinced… But he’s a gentleman ghost… he just gets angry sometimes and has to make his presence known! Typically Black Country!"

This Gentleman Spirit is just watching over a place that he loves and call's his home. He doesnt mean harm to anyone just to Respect what is his.

Paul is right. The spirits of the dead don't 'haunt' the land where they are buried, they 'haunt' the places they loved, or sadly where they died. There is speak of only one ghost that wil haunt every grave yard...the 1st person to be buried there, they are then known as the gate keeper and keep all the others that are buried there safe.It is a common misconception that 'ghosts' live in grave yards, because people are buried there.

Another building that's gone that I have had a not so nice experience in is the old Pedmore House, many an old member of staff can tell you about different things that happened. Mine was bar stools falling fully over when there was only me there, all my experiences happened in the function room, The Highlander

It's wrong to think that Ghosts would haunt a graveyard. They are drawn to 'hang around' places that meant something to them when they were alive. They may never have seen their burial site before they died, so it would be of no interest or meaning to them.

Hadn't heard about this case, despite having looked into such things for over 20 years now!!! Fascinating stuff!! Nick (West Midlands Ghost Club)

I have reliefed the Stag's Head in Penn, Wolverhampton on more than one occasion and that place is seriously haunted - apparantly by two spirits, one good, one bad. i've had many experiences with them. Anyone who knows the pub well, will have their own experiences!

marc
ive reliefed pubs for 16 years all over the country but the worst experience i had was when i went to get a cellar set up at a 16th century coaching in at ludlow. From the minute i walked in i felt ill and was hot then cold and hot again, i had to return home in the end but the strange thing was that when i walked back out the pub i was fine again, i cant mention the name as my friends are now running it and dont want to scare them but if anyone as anymore stories about pubs post them here

Were i work at a police station the area is haunted and i have actually seen (spoken to) a ghost. Also prisoners at the station have complained about a presence in the cells with them and one person has complained about being held down on the bench against his will.
