Wolverhampton speedway team took the bonus point from Arlington after a dramatic finish to an incident-packed meeting. Eastbourne's eight-point win was the exact reverse of the result at Monmore Green last month, leading to a run-off for the aggregate bonus point - which went Wolves' way when guests Peter Karlsson (Wolves) and Mark Loram tangled, with Loram deemed to be at fault. Loram and Chris Harris proved to be inspired replacements for the Eagles and put the home side in control with a 5-1 in Heat 10, but Wolves battled back into contention with a pair of consecutive 4-2s only for Fredrik Lindgren to be unluckily excluded after a first-bend incident in Heat 13.

Karlsson was leading the Wolves charge as he replaced brother Mikael Max, but when he finished behind Loram and Harris in the re-run, the aggregate scores were level. Manager Peter Adams nominated Karlsson for a tactical substitute ride in Heat 14 for double points off the 15 metre handicap, and although Davey Watt won the race Karlsson came home in second place after David Howe eased up - only for the Swede to be excluded by referee Barry Richardson for not wearing the black-and-white helmet colour required to signify a double points ride! So Eastbourne went in front on aggregate for the first time, but the run-off was secured by Karlsson's win in Heat 15 and a battling ride by Fredrik Lindgren to make it past Harris in the closing stages. Eastbourne had led throughout much of the meeting, but it was close for some time until the first Loram/Harris 5-1 in Heat 10 which left Wolves fighting to hold on to the bonus point. Karlsson finished with four race wins, plus the run-off, whilst Lindgren, skipper Steve Johnston and Ronnie Correy all took the chequered flag first too in a match which certainly lived up to the recent Eastbourne/Wolves tradition. |
