Train service to end?

Updated July 2008. The government has said it is ending funding for the rail link between Walsall and Wolverhampton. What do you think about this? Have your say!

SCROLL DOWN TO ADD YOUR COMMENT TO THE BOX.

A rail link between two West Midlands stations could be axed after the government said it is ending its funding.

The Department for Transport has said the 15-minute long Walsall to Wolverhampton link is "lightly used".

At the end of 2005 the service was given a temporary reprieve and West Midlands transport bosses have estimated that the number of passengers using the line has grown to 60,000 per year.

However, the government has said it is focusing on providing extra capacity on the busiest routes in the region as part of a franchise agreement.

With a station at Willenhall the line would be much better server.

John
I can understand the withdrawal of this service if the trains are needed elsewhere. I've heard of plans to re-open the Walsall - Willenhall - Wednesfield - Wolverhampton line as part of the Midland Metro. This would be a far better option because it would provide an effective link between the two borough's without useing the roads and will provide better transport links for the Wdensfield and Heath Town areas.

Andrew Hayes
Could the Government PLEASE make up its mind about our integrated transport system (I doubt it, as we don’t have one!). Perhaps when trains run at peak times, when people need them and its publicised passenger figures would increase even more. If indeed the figures are correct (60,000 per annum), then this means potentially even more car journeys on our congested roads. More pollution and more tax to the Government in fuel duty I guess for the car user. Perhaps some Government officials should try this journey by car and then using this train link! I’m sure that if this was part of a London or Southern based train system it would not be cut!

Irene Sharp
Mark, no it wouldn't happen in London, because we would scream blue murder we would fight all the to Parliament. Are you willing to fight all the way or are you all mouth. You put up with the most reidicules bus services most look and smell as if they have just come from the local scrap yard they leak from every orifice that is possible and you put up with it. The government wont to cut pullution how many extra car & bus would be put on the road if they close the line use you common. Stop nit-picking do something a boutit. GOOD LUCK.

mark
i wonder if this is happening to services in London... I doubt it!!!!

Doubting Thomas
"Lightly used" say Department for Transport? Of course it is lightly used! It's a vital service that is not promoted. I tried catching it - but I missed it. Then I had an hour wait until the next train. I couldn't wait an hour, so I caught the bus instead. That's why it is lightly used - it's not frequent, perceived to be reliable or advertised enough. Also, their "40-minute bus journey"? It takes an hour at least to travel from W'ton to Walsall by bus. Why? Because the roads in this densely populated part of the UK are clogged with cars. So what should be done? Make the W'ton to Walsall train service more frequent...

Mr X
A few months ago I used the 12.25 from Wolverhampton to Walsall and I was one of just three passengers on the single coach train. A station at Willenhall would be of great benifit considering that Bloxwich, a town of roughly the same size as two stations when Willenhall has nothing at the moment. If they also built a parkway station on the site of the old portobello station, it would take a lot of traffic off the A454.

william roberts
Walsall bus station is not fit for the purpose, whoever planned it, and the councilors who approved it should all resign en bloc, and the designers mad to pay back thier fees to the people of Walsall.

Adam
The reason why i dont use the Walsall - Wolverhampton line is because the connection times with trains to the north of Walsall are os bad. On a Saturady there is almost a hour gap from when the train from Rugeley arives to when the Wolverhampton train leaves Walsall. I would use the line more if it was extended north to Hednesford with stops at Landywood and Cannock.

H Guest (Wolverhampton)
I take my son to school from Wolves to Walsall and will have an eatra 45 mins + added to my journey if the train service terminates. Surely more trains and less buses would be better and like other people have suggested put stations in wednesfield/willenhall which will then encourage people to use trains and ease conjestion on the roads. It is much cleaner on the train also and you do not get lots of kids messing about smoking and playing annoying music. Please let the service continue!

Graham Jones
Yes, it seems that there has been a reprieve for the service till December, 2008.During this time, let's hope the service is advertised more and that consideration is given to opening intermediate stations, as suggested by other correspondents. This will generate more custom and revenue, and help relieve road congestion (and carbon emissions).

Graham Jones
I trust common sense will prevail and that this route will remain open. If the service is better advertised and intermediate stations, such as "park-and-ride" at Willenhall, could be re-opened, enabling passengers from there to travel to either Walsall or Wolverhampton, I'm sure the service would go from strength to strength and have a much brighter, more profitable, future. No - don't close this route! Buses are not the answer.

Antony Shelton, Willenhall
The whole thing seems highly illogical, we have a government trying to promote public service and then allowing its demise, it is about time these people in Number 10 practiced their preachings and kept their promises. The subsidy of this service is paramount as is a station in the town of Willenhall between Wolverhampton and Walsall that would greatly benefit from greater links to its major towns that its residents pay their council taxes to. The major towns would enjoy a greater increase in expenditure. At the end of the day you can't plant a flowerbed without setting the seeds first. The government and local authorities do not exploit local opportunities to their advantage, it is a good job they aren't an enterprising business that have to fulfil a main objective and that is serve the customers. Keep the line going and try to aid its promotion and exploit its opportunities, there are plenty of gaps that need servicing i.e. local commuters and SME's that rely on good transport links to survive.

Jimmy P
Further information from the people taking over from Central suggest the line has a reperirve until decemeber 2008

Alex Fenlon - Aged 16
The Train to walsall is brilliant - It takes me 14 minutes into town and 40 minutes by bus to walsall - nearly an hour. The train - 28 minutes!! You cant beat it. If they added a station where they said they were, at Wednesfield ( near farmfoods ), Willenhall and Aldridge, it would be a lot better!

Jimmy P
Seems central trains staff can confirm that Walsall/Wolverhampton line is to cease after september. Sign so all you people that used will have to use the over patronised and poor service run by yes you guess it National express Travel West Midlands Group. So they dont really care do they...

tom brant
Why not send rains from Stourbridge through Dudley to Walsall and than to Wolverhampton - Uses existing lines and gets more people on it avoiding Birimingham to wolverhampton without cahnging trains!!!

NIGEL SMITH
IT WOULD BE SAD TO SEE THE TRAIN SERVICE FROM WALSALL TO WOLVERHAMPTON FINISH BUT IF IS NOT PATRONISED HOW CAN IT SURVIVE.

James Page
Set up a petition at Number 10 ( for what it worth ) to get Willenhall a railway station. Keep your eye peeled.

Richard Cartmell
Black country travel has always been crap now it's getting worse not better! Think I will stay in my car for now

Richard Cartmell
I think it's a shame this service will stop because passengers will now have to travel to Birmingham to get to Wolverhampton which will mean higher travel costs and overcrowding. How can people ever be pursuaded to leave their cars at home when travelling by train takes too long and costs too much?

peter ward
The government keeps talkingabout polution then stops the local railway conectionwhat clever people they are

Roxanne
Last time I visited this page the bus fare between Walsall and Wolverhampton on the 529 was cheaper than a return on the train. Now the bus fares have gone up yet again and it is 70p cheaper to get a return on the train. Are they really still going to cancel this service in Oct?! Are they mad?!

SPS
I would really like to see a station for Aldridge, but if the removal of the Walsall-Wolverhampton service affects a reopening of Aldridge I am going to be even more annoyed with this decision. Look at www.freewebs.com/southstaffsrailway if you want to keep the walsall-wolverhampton service and reopen the south staffs railway. Anyone agree for a Aldridge station?

J G PARSONS
If willenhall still had a platform at the station i could travel to w-ton by train instead of by road there and back on my bus pass.

ALLAN WILSON
The pressent Local Services Should Be Combined 1 Birmingham New Street - Wolverhampton 2 Wolverhampton - Walsall 3 Walsall - Birmingham Int Via New St This eliminate the use of the diesel unit on the Wolverhampton - Walsall Shuttle while Maintaining / Improving Journey Potential

mei-yee liew
I am looking to relocate to the Walsall area and that link between Walsall and Wolverhampton was a big selling point for me, if it stops next Oct I am not sure whether to move there or not as i would need good links to and from Wolverhampton.

Jack Goode
I been to Walsall station with my Uncle Paul and walked around the station

Jim
Why oh why the cannot publise this route alot better i dont know. Perhaps even extend journey from wolves-walsall-birmingham airport. Come on network rail engage your brains. More marketing tell people the service is there. entend the route think about it even the possibilities of Wolves-Walsall-Lichfield could be an option. The track beds are there. To much of the west midlands is congested with cars and buses. And unlike rail the bus arent penalised for being late or not turning up. Seems like road has one standard and rail is penalised above that.

Andrew
The cost of catching the current bus service happens to now be cheaper than a return on the train. The train company should address this and alter the route as mentioned above else otherwise people will just save money by catching the bus!

barry mainwaring
Another nail in the ral coffin. Jouney time is only 12 mins. The bus jouney is much longer due to the lights at j10. still thats progress I suppose!

richie rach
THIS IS STUPID WE NEED MORE BETTER TRAIN SURVICE CAUSE I LOVE TAKING THE TRAINS I LOVE THEM !!

PJW Holland
The real reason for the withdrawal is the congestion on the Stour Valley line and yet this service does not need to venture onto it. It could run into Low Level... except ooops. Wolverhampton Phillistine Council have just allowed the site to be garbaged.

Chris
Yet another attempt to cut rail services when we should be extending them.We have seen the loss of the low level in Wolverhampton, when with a bit of forethought we could have linked up services with the main station giving more capacity. We are threatened with losing main rail to West Bromwich, whats next. How about we join up the 'fast' coach service, and put it on a dedicated route? Hold on thats what the railways are !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

varm
i think this is totally unnecessary as it is more friendly than car

Tim Rogers
It has been such a poor service for such a long time that no wonder people have stopped using it. I am convinced that if a reliable service was in place and advertised it would become as popular as almost every other rail route has become today!! A real shame for Walsall town centre which like Wolverhampton and Dudley continues to suffer from the drain of a booming Birmingham. Very short sighted planning!

annmarie heath
walsall is a mes gum every were . whot will you do a bout

Stepthen
It's about time someone realised that the five- year-old responsuble for the tranport policy in the Black Country is having a tantrum. For goodness sake, change their nappy and put them to bed and let an adult make the decisions.

sofia
how stupid now the roads are going to be more buissy and the bus faires will have to go up because people will have to go to wolverhampton by bus and now today i will have to stay at home instead of going out somewhere boo!!!

john walsall
This is more nonsense and a lack of joined up planning. At the same time as the SRA are planning to close this service, the NHS is looking to centralise services for Walsall in Wolverhampton, for example there is a consultation on Paediatric services being centralised on the New Cross Site ? Aservice from Walsall close to or linking to New cross would make alot of sense and enable people to use public transport for hospital visite instead of paying the huge car parking charges,as well as keeping cars off the road.

David Woods
In my view we should be looking to expand rail based services to reduce congestion on our roads. Now is the time to be investing money in re-laying track on some of the long disused lines and getting light rail or trams service running over them. Wolverhampton had a High and a Low level station. Lets get the Low levelback in service.

Bob D
There needs to be more stops to make the service viable. As a min Willenhall

billy gibson
...oh doctorr beeching what have you done?... and here was i foolishle thinking that the region was trying to connect itself up properly by tram, rail and of the public transport means, while the number of vehicles further block all the main arteries by road!MORE AND BETTER PUBLIC TRANSPORT PLEASE - not less!!!

James Page
Yet again another cut to railways in the West Midlands. If they had looked at the oppurtunities to build more station between Walsall and Wolverhampton and maybe consider a Black Country / Staffordshire circle then perhaps the people of the black country coulod get out of there cars and get to those place that need 3 or for changes of buses. Come SRA wake up and find ways to make it work. marketing Marketing MArketing thats whata private sector business would do so get your finger out and tell people what they have

Matt
Part of the problem of light use, must be lack of stations between Walsall and Wolverhampton. Perhaps with halts at Willenhall and Darlaston, there would be more people willing to use this service.

******* Iptoff
Trains are by nature very long affairs, whilst buses are much shorter, so... the lenghty discourse over which form of transport is preferable is inversely proportional to the length and thus pretty pointless...

Lee Slater, Brownhills
One word PATHETIC!!! As already said rush hour on the roads is manic.. We moan about congestion on the roads and congestion charges and then on the other hand they talk about cancelling worthy train routes... If they're was more routes like the old Lichfield - Brownhills - Walsall route then more people would change there mindset of travel... I would suggest The Strategic Rail Authority/Goverment go over to Holland to see how a proper transport system works!!!

DR S B EACHEMPATI
ITS NONSENSE. DONT INCONVENIENCE INNOCENT PASSENGERS BY LENGTHENING THEIR TRAVEL TIME

Robert
I think that it should stay because there would be more conjeston an the road.

Pam Cartwright
"Fast coach service", obviously not using the roads that actually exist between Walsall and Wolverhampton as they are certainly not fast even off peak. The Victorians organised transport better they realised the value of train transport.

P.Bergeroo
How can everyone complain about cancelling this service. I got the last train back from Wolverhampton to Walsall at 10:55pm on a Tuesday night. Myself and my lady companion were the only people on the whole train, apart from the two staff! Two staff + Two passengers - it doesn't make economic sense does it ... Maybe turn it into a rushhour service only...?

Darren, South Staffs
What a ridiculous idea to cancel the service. The only reason that it is poorly used is because it is so unreliable and infrequent. I spent 15 mins queing at Wolverhampton station, to be told that it was cancelled!!!??! And that I should really use the bus - have you been on the 529 in the rush hour? What the train needs is to be more frequent/more reliable and go futher afield - say to Sutton. That way at least we can cross the West Midlands without using roads and without going via Birmingham. The lines are there so why not use them? Why is the West Midlands so behind in public transport? Forget the Metro - use the train lines already there!

Genie
Someone wants to make the pen pusher who made the decision try to get from walsall to wolverhampton during rush hour every day on the 529 Bus, and then let them figure out that a coach will not be any faster, yeah it wont stop at every stop but its still got to get over junction 10 and down some of the busier roads. I live in willenhall & have worked in both walsall and wolverhampton and the bus is fine if your only going half of the route in either direction but no way on earth would i sit on that bus for how long it takes to travel the whole route in rush hour. the reason the trains are not used very much is because of the random timings on the timetable, when i finished work @ 5 in walsall and needed to get to wolverhampton i worked out it would be faster to actually catch the bus to wolverhampton than spend nearly 45 minutes sat in walsall train station.

Roxanne Blanton
I think it's absoloutly terrible! The train service between Walsall and Wolverhampton is a very fast service which is often used by students such as myself to get to Wolverhampton University actually on time! There is a University free bus that runs from Walsall to Wolverhampton but this can often be at awkward times during the day. To save spending and hour doing nothing in Wolverhampton, or to save from being late for lectures, the train service is often the only option. The current bus service between Walsall and Wolverhampton is SO slow you wouldn't belive. It can often take up to and sometimes even over an hour at peak times! I'm not sure how this so called 'fast coach service' is going to be any better! There will be too many people and not enough buses. The train service between Walsall and Wolverhampton has practically only just re-opened. It closed down a few months ago for repairs or something of the like, when it reopened it was a god send, now they want to close it down AGAIN!

John W
There is already a regular bus from the awful Walsall Bus Station (the one were you get wet and cold because there is no real shelter!) to Wolverhampton, the 529 but it takes three times as long as the train. The other great thing about the train is that it continues through Codsall and Albrighton etc which is very useful. A very sad day if they take off this valuable service...as usual, they want us to use public transport more, but then take it away from us!

Nigel Carter
More congestion on the roads , UTTER STUPIDITY !!

Martin
I work in Derby and drive there as there's no direct route from Wolverhampton. It is quicker by road, but still takes an hour and ten to an hour and twenty mins a day and you're moaning about getting to Wolverhampton to Walsall, the bus is only half an hour anyway!!

James Page
The reason it failed is the the proposed stations ( Pleck and Willenhall ) have not been built. It the age old excuse of they will cost to much money. If some thought went into it Willenehall could be a parkway station. I know alot of people who park there cars at Willenhall and catch the buses into Wolverhampton, Telford and Walsall. Its aabout time they realise that YEs it will cost money , but yes it also cost money to widen road such as the willenhall road ( at neachell lane ). I suspect the government just want the excuse to up road tax and not subsidise station. Money Hungry polticians !!!

david
i think you should det up a bus service aswell and see how much the bus is used compared to a train

danny
i think that this is wrong as a train is so much quicker but all thou i live in london i go 2 wolverhampton uni and go home vie walsall to see ma girlfreind and i have 2 say for me and many others it is a lot quicker for me reagards DWf

Mark Hawkins
The only reason it's lightly used is due to the fact that no stations have been built along that stretch of line for the people to make use of this service,we are supposed to be getting traffic of the road not increase it by yet another bus service.I don't know about removing this service they should have looked at building station's along there and also the re-instatement of the lichfield to walsall line

Graham Jones
I sometimes wonder at the logic of these so called planners! Surely, the idea of trying to encourage the use of public transport, especially railways, is at odds with the ludicrous decision to close this route. Why add more misery for people who have to, or choose to, use public transport and are forced to use roads? New stations should be opened at Willenhall and Darlaston and the route should be PROMOTED MORE. If you are concerned about this closure (and others), I strongly encourage you to contact your local councillors, members of parliament and transport companies to register your disapproval of this decision.

Michael
And I wonder why I ever emigrated to Australia.....now I know. A decent transport system, great weather, lovely beaches etc ....and after all that you don't care what they do. Don't worry be happy!!!

Paul Williams
Another pathetic decision which shows how the UK is falling behind the rest of Europe in all major areas. Local trains run between comparable sized towns in all other European countries. What this service needs is a 30 minute frequency and a couple of other stops en route? If people don't want to go from Wolverhampton to Walsall why is the 529 bus so busy. I will now have to spend an extra half an hour travelling. Rubbish planning from a rubbish authority in a rubbish country.

Ian Oakes
I thought the idea was remove congestion from our already busy roads?

Neil, South Staffs
A different view… The problem with the line is that services carry on to stations between Wolverhampton and Wellington. As a commuter from one of these stations, the main destination from them is Birmingham. Because commuters have to change at Wolverhampton to get another train to Birmingham, it's instantly less appealing than a direct service. Why should my service prop up a failing one? During the early part of 2005 when Wolverhampton-Walsall was replaced by coaches, the train ran directly to Birmingham rather than Walsall from local stations between Wellington and Wolverhampton. Needless to say the revised train service was extremely popular with crush loading and car parks full. The Wolverhampton to Walsall leg of the service is having a detrimental effect on other stations which could be popular commuter stations into Birmingham. Also, without major investment and subsidy (which Centro and local authorities should have provided many years ago) the Wolverhampton-Walsall leg has little or no future. Face it, if you're at either end of the line, Birmingham is always going to be more appealing and that's where the passengers will go. The Wolverhampton to Walsall was built on a flimsy business case and until new stations are built at Willenhall and Darlaston, frequency improved and services go no further than Wolverhampton, only then could it be a success.

Sue - Walsall
Here we go again. What's wrong with Walsall? Why can't we have a variety of destinations? Why do people think that the peope of Walsall only work in Walsall? My daughter relies on this service to get her to work in Shrewsbury. If she had to relocate she probably will not be able to afford housing there. Do not allow restrictions, advertise the service more. Walsall gave up on an enlarged railway in the 19th Century to which Birmingham benefitted. So do not give up on ths service. Lets have a bit of inspiration for Walsall. After all what is the point of a station for two routes only - to Birmingham and back, whoopee do.

Gemma
what is the point in replaceing the train service with the bus service because you are only causeing more traffic ont eh roads its a waste of time i say. Manor High Student.

Sal, Walsall
I implore those with the power to change the transport situation in Walsall to think wisely about the Walsall -Wellington (Shropshire) service. Not only does it go through Wolverhampton and Telford but it also stops at Cosford, the home of the RAF museum. If it carried on to the next station on the line it would reach Shrewsbury, capital of one of the most historic counties in England. If there were more of the smaller stops on the way, more people would use it (think how many people from Willenhall and Darlaston go working, shopping and clubbing in Wolverhampton?) A rail service Shrewsbury-Wolverhampton-Walsall-Sutton Coldfield-Birmingham and beyond would serve so many commuters! An increase in frequency would also improve the service! There was none or very little advertising about the service in Walsall from the very beginning, with even less now they threaten to close it. There is no such thing as a ‘fast’ coach service which depends entirely on the traffic around them. I use the line daily and the train is always packed in the afternoons just when I fancy a sit down. Yes it is delayed sometimes but it has the best efficiency rating of any commuter service I have ever used (several in various areas of the country). Please don’t take this service away and make my job untenable, I don’t want to have to move because of short-sighted politicians!

Les
It would be more useful to cancel the Walsall service and reinstate the local service from Wolverhampton via Birmingham International culminating in Coventry as before the alteration.

Peter
Does it really matter? the employment situation is so bad that no-one will soon have to go anywhere in the Black country to work so walking will be fast enough!!

Richard Williams
Please don't stop this service. Unless a service is advertised no one knows it's there! and when it is advertised it actually goes past wolverhamton and onto Telford. not just walsall to wolverhampton and back.

Kevin
More trains, less buses.

Mary Jones
It took some years to revive this service, if we are to create a vibrant Black Country, then let's keep it until the Metro link is up and running. No doubt, it's all down to cost!

Joe
this is a most pitiful decision. no wonder more and more people are driving instead of using public transport !

jlooker
Why cancel a service that is fast will little or no holdups, when the bus service is abismal, with traffic jams road works and every other hold up you could put a name to. Do the powers that be WANT more cars on the road, and more people groaning about public transport, or is it just that there is a man in charge again!

wendy mills
That's it shut us off from every corner - we can just about get into the tightly squeezed bus station now they are going to take the railways off us as well. They should have left the bus station as it was & brightened up the rail station it's dingy it's a mess.

freight man
this is not the right decision at all at this time, the possibility for extending this service are endless as some people have mentioned. the blocking point for this service is walsall station. platform 3 needs to be fully opened up to through trains before any service to birmingham via the sutton park line can be considered.i support the continuation of this service and would like to see it extended, but the signaling over the park and down to hednesford will need to see some serious improvement first.

Mick Field, Halesowen
Train lines are locked up with trains- sometimes leaves. Trains are smelly and dirty due to much public use (The General public are partly to blame for this for being so filthy- dropping litter and gum, etc) and trains create their own emissions. It is far easier for a commuter to get to his/her destination by use of the common car. Indeed it is far more convenient as it generally gets you from doorstep to doorstep. Trains rarely achieve this, and if you are fortunate enough that they do, they're rarely on time. As a country we don't know how to run a rail network. We should give it up as a bad job and concentrate on improving the road network.

P Pointon
The roads are locked up with cars, the air stinks with their emissions and they are contributing to global warming. How idiotic then to promote the use of these smelly tin cans by removing a service that was hard-won in the first place.

Richard Temple
Beeching revisited. A short sighted and absurd decision. We need more railways not fewer.

Gary Mason, Cradley Heath
agree with Ray completely. Get rid of all the rail track, tram lines and bus lanes and build more roads. Cars and Roads- They are the future.

Ray Poole
Why would anyone want to travel by train between Blackcountry destinations anyway? Surely its easier to hop in a car and drive where you want to go. That way you don't get dissapointed when the train arrives late, or it gets cancelled, or worse still, the route is deleted from the schedule. Brum Brum.

Geoff Kerr
Will the coach carry cycles, heavy luggage, wheelchairs and non-folding pushchairs? Will it issue and accept rail tickets? If the answer to any of these is no, then it's not a proper replacement. But this is just the beginning - the civil servants in London who will be running the railways soon have a cost-cutting agenda and don't really want local services in the English regions.

Joe
this is an awful idea. fast coach in traffic is not fast coach !

Karl Macnaughton
I have been expecting, and dreading, this. The train between these two places takes 10 minutes while the bus is closer to half an hour. This service should have remained until such time as the Metro links the two destinations (if that ever happens!)

David Chorley
The west midlands has always been an area neglected by successive governments... Probably no one in Westminster would really give a rip... unless the area suddenly became politically marginal... likely to become the deciding factor in a general election... then the area would get the attention it deserves. A rail service Shrewsbury-Wolverhampton-Walsall-Sutton Coldfield-Birmingham-Banbury-Oxford-London would serve many needs. But dream on.

Ian Bosworth
Big shame there's not more promotion and a more frequent, reliable service. Any chance of a tie-in with the University of Wolverhampton to transport between campuses?

Steven
It would certainly help matters if the intermediate stations at Willenhall and Darlaston were re-opened. It's symptomatic of the almost total destruction of the Black Country rail network since 1960 in favour of one that revolves around Birmingham...

David
Its a [rude word] for the ones who actually rely on this train. I have to use it every day. If there was a sensible bus service between Bilston and Walsall it would be better. Oh rail people I know lets put a direct bus route to Hednesford....

Radio Man
The railways play an important part in our transport inferstructure but as has been the case for many years have been allowed to wither and die at the expense of ever more roads (M6 Toll). There are No pedestrian traffic lights on the railways. There are no traffic jams on the railways. There are no stressed out mothers doing the 'school run' on the railways. So why not keep open a link between 2 large urban conibations that once lost will NEVER be replaced. Buses run on the roads, so that's another vehicle or more to help clog up an already clogged up system as it is.

Anon
With regards to the increasing emphasis on accessibility planning within the next round of Local Transport Plans how is Centro, the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive, going to respond? This is hardly improving peoples' accessibility to education and employment opportunities in Walsall and Wolverhampton.

M Hastilow
I think it is a Stupid move as there is already a bus service. If they opened more stations and inproved the frequence maybe more people would use it instead of the overcrowded buses and roads. There is already gridlock in Walsall during the rush hours as it is, we need more diversity and more public transport subsidy not less.

Jon Phillips
This not only scuppers the present service, but may also do the same to plans to extend this line further. This line, offering a service from Telford through Wolverhampton to Walsall, should be extended to both Aldridge and Streetley. What price those stations never opening if this goes ahead?

Grant Williams
What a joke! It took long enough to get the rail service, and then they took it off to do some engineering work, and wondered why nobody wanted to go by bus through the congestion... It's about time Walsall had the rail service it needs and deserves... they could put an hourly or two hourly London service on by sending a Virgin Pendolino in instead of to Wolverhampton...

carl
it'd help if they reopened stations at willenhall and maybe a few other places...

John Mornington
To be honest there is no such thing as a fast coach service during thr rush hour in between Wolverhampton and Walsall, and this is just adding to the amount of polution going into the atmosphere. but then again the people who make these decisions rarely ever have to travel like ordinary people do!!!!

Mark
I live in Wolves and used to use the train to Walsall for work. It was quite often late, or cancelled at the last minute. The trains were the worst I've ever used. It was an hourly service and there were times when I was the only person on it. I won't miss it!

peter
It will be lightly used if it is not publicised! I use Wolverhampton Station and the Centro web site and I never noticed that there was a service to Walsall.

Glory
This is stupid - I used to catch the train into Wolverhampton for work and it took 15 minutes. I went on the bus last week, and it took over 35 minutes!! How can they justify removing it? The few who do use it rely on it

This may be a lightly used service, but the SRA thinks that it should be replaced by a coach, the only thing is there is too much road transport between Wolverhampton and Walsall.
