Introduction

Official information about population is carried out by using a census.

To be valid, census data must:

  • be government sponsored,
  • be taken at regular intervals,
  • be taken at the same time throughout the country,
  • include everyone.

Problems:

  • Language
  • Literacy
  • Transport
  • Illegal immigrants
  • Street people
  • Accessibility e.g mountaineous areas
  • Conflict e.g civil war
  • Nomads e.g the Bedouin in north Africa
  • Size of country
  • Size of population e.g China has over 1 billion citizens
  • Cost for economically less developed countries
  • Mistrust of the government
  • Refugees
