Understanding our environment
Why are polar bears white?
To camouflage them so their predators cannot see them
To camouflage them so their prey cannot see them
So that they absorb heat from the sun easily
Camels have humps so that they can:
store fat without insulating the whole body
store water for long periods of time
shade the back of their head while walking in the desert during the day
What is the most likely reason why animals in hot climates have larger ears than similar animals in cold climates?
It is more difficult to hear in hot air, so bigger ears are needed
Big ears lose heat quickly while small ears lose heat slowly
Bigs ears are useful for creating a breeze when they are flapped quickly
What is the most likely reason why wasps and bees have black and yellow stripes?
The stripes warn other animals that wasps and bees are dangerous
The stripes are attractive to birds and other predators
The stripes make them look like harmless hoverflies so they can sneak up on their prey
A predator species is most likely to have:
defences such as a sting
eyes in the side of its head
eyes in the front of its head
