It is possible that the sequence of events could be put in any order and the story would still make sense. Choose one of the following reasons:
The narrator is lying.
The story is written like the thoughts inside a person's head, and these might come in any order.
Stories do not need a logical order.
Can you think of a reason why the trainers are white, the narrator's white wedding is mentioned, and why, at the beginning and end, the narrator cradles the trainers like a new baby "small and pale"?
White represents innocence, and this is important to the narrator because she wishes she could go back to a time of innocence for herself and her daughter.
The narrator likes the colour white, but her daughter does not.
It is just a coincidence, because most wedding dresses are white, and quite a lot of trainers, too.
Which character is the most important to the plot?
The narrator, because she tells the story.
The daughter, because the story is about her.
The narrator, her daughter and the narrator's mother are equally important, because the story is about their relationships with each other and what has gone wrong.
