Multiplying by 10, 100, 1000

Multiply by 10

When we multiply by 10, every figure moves one place to the left. Units become tens, tens become hundreds and hundreds become thousands.

Multiplying by 10

Shows nothing in the hundreds column, 2 in the tens column, and 3 in the units column

What is 23 x 10?

Multiply by 100

When we multiply by 100, every figure moves two places to the left. Units become hundreds, tens become thousands and hundreds become ten-thousands.

Multiplying by 100

shows nothing in the thousands column, nothing in the hundreds column, 1 in the tens column, and 2 in the units column

What is 12 x 100?

Multiply by 1000

When we multiply by 1000, every figure moves three places to the left. Units become thousands, tens become ten-thousands, and hundreds become hundred-thousands.

Multiplying by 1000

7 in the thousands column, 0 in the hundreds, 0 in the tens, and 0 in the units

Each figure has moved 3 places to the left. There is a gap in the 'hundreds' column, the 'tens' column, and the 'units' column. There aren't any hundreds, tens or units, so insert a '0' in each. 7 x 1000 = 7000.
