This year’s celebrations have continued to grow with over 200 exciting and vibrant events and activities for the whole community. Black History Month (BHM) continues to celebrate the contributions, struggles and achievements of Black people and the expression of their diversity, culture and heritage.

This year’s celebrations span October as the traditional month of celebration and expand into November. This is to highlight this year’s BHM international link with Johannesburg, South Africa, which hosts its BHM in November.

BHM’s philosophy of ‘past + present = future’ recognises the need to learn from the past to make a difference to the future. In doing this it is hoped to make a real difference to Birmingham realising its potential as a genuinely diverse city. Birmingham has made history with its first Asian Lord Mayor, Cllr. Mahmood Hussain and the appointment of Rt. Rev. John Sentamu as new Bishop of Birmingham - the first black person to head an Anglican diocese in the UK.

This year’s celebrations will also mark the establishment of the ‘Black History Foundation’, which will act as the catalyst for promoting BHM and promoting Black history throughout the year.

A full BHM events listing can be found on the BHM website. You can also tune into ‘New Style Radio 98.7 FM’, BHM’s official radio station, which will be following the event unfold.

If you can contribute to future BHM programmes or would like to find out more about the Black History Foundation contact Jagwant Johal on 0121 303 3703.
