BLACK HISTORY MONTH LAUNCH
1st October
The Launch marks the start of Birmingham's 5th annual BHM. The programme includes the opening of a major exhibition 'No time for Flowers' by Birmingham's renowned photographer Vanley Burke - photographs taken in South Africa in 1990 following the release of Nelson Mandela. A personal and radically different view of every day life in South Africa to that seen on the television and newspapers in the UK. This is followed by a showcase extravaganza with song, dance, music drumming drama and film projections celebrating the creative and artistic talents of local young people.

REDEMPTION SONGS - BLACK VOICES, GOSPEL SPIRIT AT SYMPHONY HALL
Until 1st November
An exhibition of photographs by the Birmingham based internationally renowned photographer Vanley Burke. This exhibition, drawn from his immense archive held at Birmingham Central Library, records people young and old expressing their joys, sorrows, triumphs and tragedies through gospel song.

OLA ONABULE IN CONCERT AT THE DRUM
4th October 9pm – 2am
Highly celebrated British African soul singer songwriter Ola Onabule will be performing for the first time in Birmingham with is five-piece band. His music is has fusion of funk jazz R&B gospel and soul. He has supported artists such as Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Tower of Power, Diane Reeves and his band of musicians regularly play with artists such as Roy Ayres, Jocelyn Brown, Craig David, Massive Attack, Boy George, Lisa Stansfield and many more.

BASIL GABBIDON IS APPEARING AT THE DRUM

Basil Gabbidon is a worldwide legend that Birmingham should be proud of. Founder member of Steel Pulse, writing credits that include Handsworth Revolution and many other classic sounds, Basil now puts bands together featuring top class musicians and top quality vocalists, organises excellent music education projects getting young people to play music with a Master musician.

A specially choreographed show with local reggae bands, qawali groups, steel bands, dancers, drummers, poets, DJ's and visual projections celebrating the rich cultural diversity amongst Birmingham's Black communities and paying tribute to the struggles of African, Asian and Caribbean peoples to find our place under the sun.
DON'T WORRY BE FUNJABI IS SHOWING AT THE DRUM
6th October 7.30 - 9.30pm
A comedy-combo of sketches, stand-up and audience interaction. Experience the usual quirky Funjabi characters as you are introduced to the cockney builders in India, the corrupt officers in uniform and the Bollywood family in…sane all sandwiched between award winning stand-up comedy! And if all that doesn't make you smile then don't worry, Be Funjabi!".
SPOKEN WORD - BLACK WOMEN IN TIME IS APPEARING AT THE DRUM
9th October 8.00pm – 11pm
Join Dr. Roi Kwabena Birmingham’s poet laureate for this Black history month’s special session exploring Black women’s contribution to civilisation in poetry. Special literary guests on the night include Khadija Fesay returning from the USA she is the inspiring writer/co editor of IC3: the Penguin Book of New Black Writings in Britain. Supported by local poet/musician Amrita & the Chestnuts. The open mike session will be reserved for female poets of all age. The night will be recorded for broadcast on New Style Radio 98.7FM.
NO TIME FOR FLOWERS AT THE DRUM

To accompany his exhibition ' No time For Flowers’ Vanley will be in conversation with Raj Pal (Head of Museums and Arts – Sandwell MBC) to talk about the exhibition and his experiences as a Black artist.
ALVIN DAVIS WILL BE APPEARING AT THE DRUM
12th October 9pm – 2am
Alto and soprano saxophonist Alvin Davis is probably Birmingham’s most successful Jazz musician with 3 albums on release, all of which have sold big around the world. Alvin plays outstanding Jazz and pushed his excellent rhythm section to new heights.
SOCA PARTY IS AT THE DRUM
12th October 9pm – Late
Magic Touch Promotions have build a reputation as Birmingham’s foremost Soca promoters with packed out audiences at the drum dancing to the hottest Soca tunes in town. They have put together a special BHM Soca party featuring Sylvester the Soca master, Bajan Touch, local dj - Mr Niceness and Daddy Fishhead. With soca dancers and an array of special guests appearances on the night. You can’t afford to miss this one!
SISTERS, LET'S SING WITH BLACK VOICES - AT THE SYMPHONY HALL
13th October 2002
Linda Tillery and The Cultural Heritage Choir -
share gospel, spirituals, calypsos, jazz, African and Caribbean, traditional folk, reggae and contemporary songs in an evening of uplifting and entertaining music. Birmingham’s Black Voices are a highly succesful collective who have worked with artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the CBSO, opened for Ray Charles and have even been in talks with Spielberg. Linda Tillery joins them from America and has played with Santana, Wilson Pickett, Oleta Adams and Huey Lewis and the News. Primarily a cappella, the groups will also use percussive instruments to remind us of the power of the drum. Exuberant rhythms and soulful harmonies celebrate the power of the human voice.
UPFRONT COMEDY USA - THE DRUM
13th October 7.30pm – 9.30pm
As part of Birmingham Comedy Festival Upfront Comedy presents a Black History Month special with top US stand up comedian Shang whose TV shows appearances USA side include Black Entertainment Television, Comic View, Def Comedy Jam UK TV appearances include Live at Jongleurs (UK Gold) & the Jack Docherty Show. Also appearing on the night, award-winning performer Kojo voted (as 'Best Newcomer' 2001 at the Black Comedy Entertainment Awards). Hosting the evening, will be Birmingham’s own, John Simmit, who will be bringing his own unique flavour to the show, while taking a break from playing Dipsy in BBC TV's world wide hit Teletubbies.
CUBAN NIGHT IS AT THE DRUM
16th October 7.30pm – 11pm
As part of Black history Month - Cuban Solidarity Campaign presents an open discussion exploring Cuban Black heroes in their struggle for social justice and freedom. The discussion is followed by DJ’s playing the very best in Cuban Latin music.
HANDSWORTH THROUGH SOUTHERN EYES WILL BE AT SOHO HOUSE MUSEUM - Photographs by George Hallett
October 16th from 2.00 to 4.00pm
Exhibition of photographs of Handsworth taken by South African photographer George Hallett. The photographs were commissioned in 1972 by the Times Educational Supplement to accompany articles on the experiences of school leavers and Gus John’s report on ‘Race in the Inner City’. It forms part of an exchange project in which Birmingham photographer Vanley Burke’s photographs of anti apartheid veterans will be shown at Museum Africa, Johannesburg in December.
THE DRUM PRESENTS 'INJUSTICE'

INJUSTICE - the feature length documentary about struggles for justice by the families of people who have died in police custody. Injustice has been described as the most politically controversial film of recent years. This breathtaking piece of cinema has reduced audiences to tears with its moving portrayal of the struggles for justice by the families of people who have died at the hands of police officers. Injustice is an inspiring radical feature length film showing how people came together to challenge the state. On its release over a year ago the police tried to censor the film by threatening cinemas. Months of fighting, by the filmmakers and families in the film, ended in victory with the police backing off and the film being released in cinemas across the UK and around the world.
The first screening will be followed by a Q&A with family members and the films directors and an informal get together with music in the Frontiers Café Bar.
WHO SEN’ ME? IS AT THE DRUM
18th October 7pm – 9pm
A solo performer plays a number of male and female characters in a bittersweet account of the lives of West Indians who came to England in the1950's. One foot still in the islands, the other stepping into brand new adventures. They reflect on being back home and their time in the 'Mother Country' where they face suspicion and hostility from some of the natives, but more often curiosity and fascination. They imagined that they were coming for only four or five years, England changes them, but they change England too. Their tales resonate with those of migrant settlers the world over - Irish, Italian, Pakistani and Jewish. Atmospheric video projections and an evocative soundtrack drawing on calypso, gospel, jazz, mento and pan music provide a backdrop for the performance.
3 SHADES IS SHOWING AT THE DRUM

3 Shades, is African Cultural Exchange’s funky performance piece, it weaves its way through three decades of dance, social commentary and strong drama, revealing and often comic and unexpected trips into childhood history, fashion and flamboyance.
CAROL BREWSTER WILL BE APPEARING AT THE DRUM

Carol is already established as one of the UK’s leading singers having has sung and performed with Chaka Khan, Denise Williams, Howard McCrary, Mica Paris, Doris Troy, All Saints, Mick Hucknall and Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. Carol was born and raised in Handsworth. Carol will perform with a full band of outstanding musicians.

AN AUDIENCE WITH SAEED JAFFREY HOSTED BY JEFF MIRZA - THE DRUM

Saeed Jaffrey needs no introduction. He is the star of over 100 Bollywood movies and top Hollywood films such as 'A Man who would be King' with Sean Connery and Michael Caine. He has performed in the West End and was last seen in 'The King & I' at the Palladium. Many will remember him from Coronation Street. He will be in conversation with leading Asian stand up comedian Jeoff Mirza talking (and answering questions) about many aspects of his life. The show will includes film extracts as well as comedy sketches from Jeff Mirza.

BLACK PANTHERS MEET SATPAL RAM

Members of the American Black Panthers including Robert King who spend years in solitary confinement will be in conversation with Satpal Ram. Birmingham based Satpal was recently released from prison having spent considerable time in solitary confinement. Appearing at the Drum and organised by R.A.C.E & the Balsall Heath Group.
A 60’s NIGHT IS COMING TO THE DRUM

DJ Trevor, playing the best from the magic sounds from the swinging sixties. If you remember the ska and bluebeat sounds from Prince Buster, Jimmy Cliff, Owen Grey, and all the other rude boys and rude girls of way back then, this will be your night!
CLUB AFRIQUE & KAKATSITSI ARE PREFORMING AT THE DRUM

Club Afrique’s reputation is arguably the best exponent of the hottest mix of African dance music in the West Midlands. With their sell out monthly events in the Studio, they have teamed up with the drum to present in the main auditorium a Black History Month special, featuring live from Ghana – internationally renowned band of Master drummers and dancers known as Kakatasitsi.
‘SHAM-E-GHAZAL’ - USTAD FIDHA HUSSAIN IS LIVE IN CONCERT AT THE DRUM

Anglo Asian Arts Association in partnership with the Drum presents a BHM special with the internationally renowned Ustad Fidha Hussain. Ustad Fidha Hussain was born in India in a family of actors and singers. He had the privilege of learning from Ustad Jhanday Khan of Calcutta; he is also the disciple of Ustad Barkhat Ali Khan of Patiala Gharna and performed with the world famous tabla maestro the late Ustad Allah Raka. As a musician, singer, songwriter and a poet of rare sensitivity and exquisite taste, he is revered all over India and appreciated by audiences all over the world. For this concert Surinder Singh who is the disciple of Ustad Ranjit Singh will accompany him on tabla. This concert is a rare occasion for Birmingham audiences to be enchanted by his musical mastery.
