Commuters in Birmingham reported journeys of just a few miles taking several hours on Wednesday night, as the main roads out of the city ground to a halt.

Cars were abandoned on all the major routes as frustrated motorists found other ways home or back to work.

Hotel rooms in the city were reported fully booked and many people were forced to sleep in their workplace.

Who's to blame?

Gridlock

The people in charge of gritting the roads in the West Midlands have been defending their treatment of the main routes last night after much of the area became gridlocked by stationary traffic.

Alan Lloyd from Birmingham city council transportation department says: "I'm well aware of people's feelings that we didn't do enough..."

Birmingham City Council have said they will cancel all parking tickets issued between 6pm on Wednesday night and midday on Thursday.

Have your say...

Since Wednesday's snowfall we've been inundated with your stories and comments.

Those sitting in traffic for hours were frustrated and angry - however it all seemed at bit of a joke to people living in countries such as Canada and the US - how could an inch of snow cause such chaos?
