FACTS

The new M6 Toll will relieve the M6 of volume which, in turn, will relieve the local transport network and reduce congestion in towns and villages.

Free flowing traffic will result in safer driving conditions.

The new M6 Toll uses noise reducing asphalt, significantly reducing the environmental impact, and providing a more comfortable journey for the motorist.

Motorists will be able to enjoy a state of the art service area which will be operated by Road Chef. This service area will offer motorists the chance to refuel, relax, hold meetings and even rest overnight in accommodation.

A survey estimates that the new M6 Toll could reduce journey times by up to 45 minutes.

Is the M6 toll road a good idea? Should motorists have to pay to use Britain's roads? Are toll charges fair, especially on businesses? Are more roads the answer to Britain's transport problems?

Have your say.

The cost of the M6 toll is extortionate when compared to French or Spanish toll autoroutes. Have they not realised that one frequently gets more revenue by reducing the cost and thereby increasing the throughput. Why do they need to increase charges (already ridiculous) well above the rate of inflation?Living in Lichfield simply compounds the problem as we have to pay the "one size fits all" price. My son travelling down from Scotland en route to the south has to pay twice if he drops in to see us even though he has only covered the toll road once, but in two stages. We just don't use it and recommend that all our visitors give it a miss. The lack of lorries using it, even the continental ones, compared to the lorry usage on the continental motorways tell their own story.

I recently visited Atlanta where the Toll price on a road was recently reduced to $0.50....WHY? Because they had now paid for the initial investmenst so all they need is maintenance money otherwise it would just be false tax. Does anyone know when price on the M6 toll will be dropping or do they plan to keep taxing us ????

TCW
£3.50 now talk of putting the price up again!!! It's time we all stopped using it !!Just for 1 week , yes it would cause a massive jam up on the original M6 but it might bring the powers that be( Our chancellor come Prime Minister)( Now there's a man who will keep his promise) (NOT) to realise that we should not have to pay a toll. The Road Tax is dear enough and if they can't run the roads out of that budget then he's got his figures wrong again!!

paul
Add your comments here why did i have to pay 3.50 when every where else is only 1.00 i think that is bad and now your putting up the price again to make it hard for drivers

I think that toll roads can be an asset to Britains congestion but I believe in this instance the M6 toll road has not eliviated the problem occuring around Junction 8 (M6 M5 interchange.) The congestion appears to be caused from the amount of vehicles travelling into Birmingham but the toll road cannot be used for that purpose as it By-Passes the City altogether. The second problem is one of fees. It started as £2.50 then soon went to £3.50, now they are on about raising it to £4.50! I for one will not use it now except in an 'emergency'. There has to be a price which motorists are happy to pay and the Toll road is happy to gain for repairs etc. Not to make huge profits as this should not be run as a private firm with shareholders in mind. In the same vein, I have it on good authority that the M6 Toll have control of matrix signs on the M6 and on many occasion i have driven south past Junction 12 reading ' Congestion M6 Jnt 11 to Jnt 8 M6 TOLL CLEAR'. When i have continued southbound on the M6 i have found the motorway to be completely clear. In my mind this is nothing more than deception and if anyone did similar would be investigated by the police. I predict that in the following years. The powers that be for the toll road will have red faces and an even bigger problem on their hands as to "who will buy this white Elephant from us"? This road will surely be used as the example for future tolls. I would like to see directors pay the price for their greedyness.

wonderful just wonderful, makes our lives so much better now we have to pay to drive!!!!!!!!

The M6 Toll appears to be yet another con trick. As previous posters have already mentioned, the junction with the M6 (the real M6) at the southern end is probably one of the worst and most dangerous junctions on the entire motorway system. The overhead gantry signs are misleading (whoever operates them should hang their heads in shame), for example, a few weeks ago I had cause to use the Toll road and, as usual, the signs were saying that this road was clear. After paying my £7 (HGV rip-off toll), I had the pleasure of sitting in a queue (still on the toll road) for over an hour as traffic tried to rejoin the M6. Judging by the amount of users (or lack of them, thanks to the ridiculous charging policy), I should imagine that the road is making a substantial loss, but going on past performances, no doubt the clowns in the Westminster State Circus will bail them out (with our money!). Yet again, the public are being taken for a ride by the very people who are supposed to be looking after our interests.

Add your comments here I use the toll road all the time, it saves me so much time and stress, build more of them!!!

Hope
M6 toll road, brilliant idea but disaggree with the charge. We pay enough in road tax and the government should fund improvements and new roads from this. If this is the beginning of charges on all motorways, will road tax be decreased?

stacey-louise
i think the M6 toll was a great idea as my dad has to travel alot and always seems to hit the traffic on the m6 so he was really pleased when they opened the m6 toll.

Roger
Add your comments here I strongly disagree with the layout of the junctions at the point where the M6Toll leaves the M6 at both ends. Drivers must make a conscious decision to leave the motorway to remain on the ‘free’ route because the main M6 motorway leads directly onto the M6Toll. At the southern junction, the confusing road markings and multitude of lanes, signposts and options make this decision baffling for those unfamiliar with the junction. Both junctions appear to have been constructed to dupe drivers into ending up on the toll by default. My belief that this is the case is confirmed by misleading signposting on major roads alongside the M6 Toll. Drivers on the A5 around Brownhills who follow signs for Lichfield and Tamworth would actually find themselves on the M6Toll with little or no warning that the route included the toll. In Sutton Coldfield the airport is signposted via the M6Toll despite it being just a few miles along a parallel free route. Furthermore, at the approach to the M6Toll, M6 users are advised by the electronic displays that the ‘M6Toll is clear’. Conversely, similar electronic displays for the M6 remain blank, implying – rather than confirming – the M6 is clear. This again appears to be a deliberate attempt to lead drivers to opt for the toll route in a moment of hasty decision making. How many people arrive at the toll booths by accident I wonder. Plenty I suspect, given the amount of last minute lane changes and sudden braking that occur at these junctions. With accurate and up to date information we could make an informed choice about our preferred route – but I object to being conned into paying a toll by tactical and misleading junction layout and signposting.

A great Idea to relieve congestion and benefit holiday makers and commuters. A bit unfair that the price is uniform for one mile or the whole thing.

ian
I used it once when i was in a rush and felt the need to avoid potential delays. What a good move, it was deserted and well surfaced which meant i could safely travel at speeds which would be thoroughly unsafe on the regular m6 or any other road for that matter-to make it free would be to miss the point of the exercise, however i would disagree with a price rise. As deon said, if you don't like paying for it, don't use it.

alex cook
having been disabled for the last 12 years and never had to pay for a toll bridge why now in this day and age must i now start paying a toll through your toll can you please explain to me the difference thank you for your time alex

Mary
Add your comments here Very unfair that you pay the same for a small journey and the same for all the whole length.

Mike Spencer
If price goes up it will be getting to expensive for the time saving!

Chris
I think the new M6 Toll despite the for's and against is great. I'm usually against paying any tolls but in this case I've made an exception. It saves so much time using this road. It takes some traffic out of Cannock, Brownhills and the surrounding area which is a good thing. People don't need to use it. I do think if they wish to take more strain off the M6 they do need to lower the price to encourage more lorries and businesses to use it.

CRAIG FRANCE
WHY DO DRIVERS HAVE TO PAY THEY PAY COUNCIL TAX AND TAX TO THE GOVERMENT

P Russell
Why does the M6 Toll have priority at it's convergence with the M6 ? How many people have taken the M6 Toll because they thought they were staying on the M6 ? Is the M6 Toll the fastest road in the country ?

Eileen Adams
This road is the best thing since sliced bread. I can understand the local residents and business people having a problem with the cost, but if it keeps tourists such as I off it, then it must help. I certainly hope so. Yes, at £3.50 each way, the price is a little steep, to say the least.

Stacey n Lucy
The M6 toll is a good idea it's economical and really alright

Deon
Thanks to the M6 Toll I can get to buckinghamshire, from Manchester in 2.5 hrs, cheaper than 20 fags. Worth every penny, if you dont agree...dont use it. Simple!!!

Mr.p. fletcher
we pay enough road, petrol, tax etc,but the motorist is an easy target,so we will be hit more often and harder as tme goes by.enough is enough,we all should not use it it's the only wepon we have.

Ed
The M6 toll road was partly funded by private business which is why the toll is in place. The use of private business kept costs down and meant that tax payer's money was saved. The answer is very simple though-if you don't want to pay to use it, don't. Stick to the normal M6. But if you want to cut your journey time by about half an hour, just dig into your bloody pockets!

chris flanagan
was in the queue the other day when a driver came into next booth and wanted change - the barrier man said he could not give him change , by this time there were other cars behind him. what is the operators next move , how does a motorist then proceed or pay etc , is he allowed through to ease congestion or does he get a freebe regards terry oh behalf of chris

Chris
Do disabled have to pay the tolls or are they free like they are on the severn bridge

jamjamjam
They should maket he m6 toll free so that the traffic can then be dvided into two roads rather than one which would problery have a greatre effect in reducing congestion than the poll as it is now.

bob
a magnificent, superb, wonderous, excellent, ingenious, creative, brilliant idea

ifox
If the Government want to reduce congestion then they should vastly reduce the cost of using the road or indeed, it should be free. It is too expensive for hauliers. People will avoid it in general, which deafeats the whole purpose of having it there in the first place!
